thinking about getting a 2004 rx8

hey guys iv been thinking about trading my 1980 camaro for a 2004 rx8, i have someone that will trade with me, but iv heard of how bad things are with these. such as having to take it to get repaired about 10 times per year, or things just randomly falling off while driving. and mazda did recall alot of the 2004 model,

http://rochester.craigslist.org/cto/1819884066.html

thats the car that id be trading for, is that a good price for it? my 30 year old camaro has less miles then it :/ and he hasnt given me a reason to trade for it.

how bad are the repairs? i just sank $15,000 into rebuilding my camaro, i dont want to have to blow another 15 having to get this fixed up

esgal 07-01-2010 04:32 PM

basically what im asking is, would i regret getting a 2004 rx8? im in high school, and id like my car to be unique, and my camaro is VERY unique, but id like a more modern car, with luxuries, and performance, and style. the rx8 seems to have it all, but it also seems to have problems

would i enjoy this car?? as a high schooler

also speed is important for me, one of my friends has a 2006 dodge charger hemi, could i out perform it?

An Rx-8 is NOT for you... :smoker:

+1. better stick w/ the camaro, especially if you sank 15k into it

esgal 07-01-2010 05:21 PM

haha wow, that is the exact opposite response i thought that i would get, thanks for your honesty guys. could i ask why you dont think its good for me?

Figs 07-01-2010 05:48 PM

You'll like the car if you
1: want something different
2: love driving fast in turns
3: like driving in style
4: love the sound of a motor at 8k

Since your in high school you probably won't like the
1: mpg
2: it's constant checking of oil level
3: it's speed( since you already sound fast and furious)

Go drive one before you trade, and some 04s had problems not all. Just really depends on how it was driven, kept up, etc. Try before you buy. Also if you really want the car save an extra 15k and go 20b I you want more speed

my camaro should get about 8mpg :P thats one of the reasons why i want to trade, and im a car guy i dont mind checking oil levels often. but i dont like the sound of a high revved engine, atleast not when its barly moving

The 8 isn't that bad but ask just about anyone here why they bought and kept their car and for the most part it will be because of either its looks or handling. If speeds your issue its not the right car for you. FI helps but if you want a fast car buy a fast car

Brilliant! Your first two posts hit all the buttons. You've now topped it.

I doff my hat.

Get a used Mustang and call it a day. You should be no where near an RX8. Wait, let me correct myself. An RX8 should be no where near you.

Winning 8 07-01-2010 08:55 PM

no not for a 04 auto...

2tone 07-01-2010 08:57 PM

yeah, with all due respect, it sounds like a rotary car isn't really for you man. stick w/ your car now or get a used mustang or something if you're looking for a more modern car. you'll probably be happier.

2tone 07-01-2010 08:59 PM

oh god, i just clicked on that link. 114k and it's an auto.......uh, dude, if you're going to get an 8, get a manual (more horsepower) and stay under 100k to be in the extended warranty. do NOT pick this car up...

simo hayha 07-03-2010 05:51 AM

+100k miles
automatic transmission
you don't like the sound of a high revving engine.

nope, an rx8 is definitely not for you

ps- i live in Rochester too, what high school do you go to?

esgal 07-04-2010 08:07 PM

Not in a straight line...on a road course, probably. It sounds like you're really looking for something with a lot of torque and that isn't an RX-8.

First off... that's a civic with a huge exhaust. Rotaries sound very different, and with an aftermarket exhaust can have a pretty nice growl. Pick the right exhaust and you should like it.

Second, if you want something fast, don't get an 04 auto. Sorry to anyone who owns one and hates hearing it, but the 4 port autos are significantly slower than a 6 port auto. The manual is even faster.

Third, the guys in that video kind of sound like douche bags.

esgal 07-05-2010 09:51 AM

this might be the wrong place to ask then, but would an rx7 be better? or should i just stay away from rotaries.

and yea i just typed ricer fart cannon into youtube and picked like the 1st one, idk them

Krazed_Rx8 07-05-2010 10:20 AM

Stay away from rotaries, thanks!

FazdaRX_8 07-05-2010 11:14 AM

like the others said 100k and 4 port auto you will be sorely disappointed. the FD rx-7 is great but hard to find one for sale in good condition. if your into big muscle cars you might want to stay there. but if you want to jump into the import sense the this is not a bad car, if you get the manual 6 port with dual oil coolers.

the1jesster 07-05-2010 11:26 AM

No matter what you buy there is always something faster

They're not hard to find in good condition. Anyways, an RX7 would be a nightmare for the OP unless it's a good condition SA/FB/FC. He should stay away from rotaries and rotaries should stay away from him.

MICHGoBlue 07-05-2010 11:49 AM

My 8 ball tells me there is a twin turboed Lamborghini Gallardo in your near future, sounds like the perfect car for a high school kid who is also a serious "car guy" that wants an automatic 4 port rx-8.

The lambo should be fast enough for high school parking lot showoffs at the same time doesn't require the movement of your left foot, go with the burnt orange paint to match your date at the prom.

+1. nice and clean fd's aren't terribly hard to find, but for a high schooler, an fd often leads to a blown engine. none of these are muscle cars, or cars for muscle car people. for burnouts and the desire to play with a challenger, look elsewhere. the rotary is likely not for you...
