Sunroof design problem
 

Just a niggly little thing...

The RX-8's sunroof dumps water into the car (and down the back of my neck!) if you open it shortly after it has rained!

Maybe all cars with a sunroof that tilts up rather than disappearing into the roof have this problem, but I've never had one before now so I don't know.

Any comments?

I had the same thing happen to me and now it makes sense as to why they tell you, in the owner's manual, not to open the sunroof if it has water on it. :eek:

Hey, take a shower and drive to work at the same time! I can see the roof collecting some water the way it's shaped. Do a quick spin around the block before opening sunroof! LOL..

the owner's manual tries to compensate for lack of common sense..........

How about accelerating on the road for a couple of seconds to get all the water off and then open your sunroof. ;)

I have to do this on my Altima's sunroof first, otherwise I'd get my leather interior wet.

This normal for any kind of sunroof. Not much you can do about it from a design standpoint, unless someone comes up with a squeegee that wipes the window off before it opens... :)

Dunno how normal/common-sensical you guys are talking about, my dual-function sun-roof, which I always use as a moon/tilt, never drains on me (has drain valves, you could ask me where they drain, I dunno, but I do know peoples have gotten clogged before). Nor my friends tilt-only in his 240.

Which way does the roof tilt in the 8?

My slide-only on my integ started giving me a shower at about 100k....I never checked drain plugs, I just shoved a towel up there and closed it when needed.

i feel bad for all you guys that had that happen but at the same time, what i wouldnt give to see the look when that happened for the first time you guys hahah. you guys must have been "alright, lets get sme nice air in here.....wtf.....*splash*

i dont have to worry too much about that here in good old so. cali cuz it hardly ever rains here however, i wouldnt be surprised at all that once it does start to rain in a few months that ill forget all about this thread and have the same thing happen to me :p

Eh, I have a Neon with a sliding tilt moonroof, and if I open it when its wet out, I get water in the car.

Funny how that works when the rear tilts up and the front tilts down above the opening...

Haha, my tiburon I could tilt open in the rain and not get wet, even while it was raining. Not once did I get wet when opening it, must just tilt at the right angle.

Ummm, regardless of the tilt angle (and/or pitch), gravity will prevail. As far as I know, water will ALWAYS travel downward; and I don't know of any moonroofs that open upward in the front.

The BMW540i I traded for my RX-8 did the opposite; the back went down. Water then drained off and I could open it when it was wet.

I could also tilt it up instead; it had rubber baffles on the side of the sunroof to prevent water from coming in the car. When it was tilted and you stopped, water never entered the car (from the roof behind the sunroof).

This problem is caused by the sunroof not being stored under the roof when open.

My tib was solid metal (not glass) and tilted but it had a rather large channel that ran around the room and when it tilted it didn't open in the front at all, it basically ran the water down into the channel along the front.

Simple design, no getting wet.

Got a nice surprise from dripping water in MX-3 the other day. It has been pouring for days in florida. It finally stopped I open the roof and take off. Wellthere was somewater still left on the roof and it had been super heated sitting on top of the car.I ended up with a nice rain of probalby 120 degree water on my neck. Lovely :)

i dont know about the tilt feature on the moonroof but if you can tilt it without water spilling in then do that then brake somewhat hard and all the water should roll off.....rainX will help the water roll off better.
