Strange effect of rotary during warm weather
 

Is it me or there is something weird with the Renesis. I have notice that during the cold month, it takes me about two weeks before I have to fill up the gas tank again. During the warm season I am filling up almost every week. My driving habit has not change since the cold season. I rev the engine every chance I get but for some reason starts to have a different attitude :D toward the warmer season. I am not bugged by the weirdness at all, just curious. Also I reside in CA if you're wondering. Is there any explaination for this. Thanks

I live in Wisconsin, where we get cold and hot weather. I have not noticed any dramatic change in performance or gas mileage between the warm and cold months.

My mileage is way worse in the winter months.

Could it be the switchover in CA to summer gas formulation is maybe giving different mileage? Wouldn't expect the change to be that great though...maybe something is wrong with your car?

tblazer is correct, summer and winter gases are different and could be the cause...

I have noticed one thing. Cooler temperature fuel seems to make the engine idle better.

Could be the A/C is on during the summer?

As an aside - reminds me of the study linking ice cream and crime... which the only link was that crooks do not like the cold :)

I did look at the engine load with and without the AC on MY 8. The AC add 4% to the engine load, I was supised it was that much. It idles at 31% without AC and at 35% with AC.

more load, more gas I would expect.

I have not noticed much change in the amount of gas used between winter and summer (weather doesn't usually get below 20 here though), but another thing to take into account is that at colder temperatures gas is more condensed. So basically you get more burnable gas per gallon in colder weather. It helps to fill up in the morning and evenings when it is cooler, and you get better gas mileage.

Isnt the storage tank below the frost line, and a a very constant temperature day to night and even pretty stable summer to winter ?

I don't think that is always the case, I don't work in gas refinement or anything, but I have heard that somewhere the temperature of the gas is changed

There are summer and winter formulas, but that is so will have lower volitility in the warmer weather.

but I still think the gas is 10 feet below the surface, so its temperature in a constant 45 degrees.

Maybe its just that u act like any normal driver and drive the car a little bit harder when its nicer weather.... i know that when summer comes around i cant help going slower than 30 km/h over the speed limit :)

I know with my Gen 3 (1993), the car runs richer once the weather warms up. With a speed density system like the Gen 3 warmer weather plus warm intake temps = richer air/fuel mixture. I know that the RX-8 went to the mass airflow system. Not sure how warmer weather affects MAF systems, but my understanding was that it was MORE tolerant of changes in weather and temperature conditions. Not sure.... anyone help me out with this one?? Thanks!!
