Starting problems - had enough!!

Hi all

I have had enough with my rx8 unless someone can help me resolve my problem. I am having problems starting my rx8 at all times of the day, every time I try to start it. Both annoying and embarrassing!

Two months ago I had the 4206F recall done along with the other two trailing spark plugs. Brand new battery too.

Does anyone know what could be the core for this problem? I have a slight vibration at idle too, which is also annoying.

I hope all my rx8 buddies can accurately diagnose this for me and add to my continued delight at driving this machine (when working!)

I'm supposed to take it to the dealer to have them look at it - but I have had problems with them before so I want to know a basis before i go in to what it could be. I have 59,000 on it

hmm . . . I got 54k miles on mine i hope the motor does not start to have problems. Everything else seems to be falling apart now though. i find that if i accidentally let off the starter before it catches and fires up it floods EVERY time. I have not had a problem yet with the deflodding procedure, keeping fingers crossed because i am waiting for the day i am in town and it happens and that will be embarrassing as hell . . .

I had my starter, plug, and battery replaced at 22K miles under warranty, did yours have that, there was a recall for that in 2006

I've had no problems with mine until this issue with the starting. It is a 2005 model. Mazda says that I cannot get the starter through warranty because I have 59,000 - was this a recall? My dealer has gave me trouble before. What was the recall reference?

I just want this starting issue resolved. Believe me, it is embarrassing as hell in the city when trying to start and people are lookin at me probably thinking 'haha, driving a sports car that wont start'

I have no idea, some of the veterans here probably know, I just brought mine in for an oil change when I first got mine and they just did it and gave me a phone call.

Here are the "TSB's" you need to bring with you to the dealer...

do you turn on your car and turn it off alot because i had the same problem with my car and what i did was just let it warm up for it can burn the fuel and not let it flood on me.it tells you what 2 do in the dvd that came with your car.

Did you know that one of the symptoms of hard starting is the "Failing coils" issue.

Take a look at this thread & it may assist you.

Hope that helps you.

if it is a TSB then you are outta luck getting it done gratis from the dealer if you are out of factory warranty. . .

Hey guys - thought i would let you all know what mazda said this morning.

They diagnosed that I needed 4 new coils, which i purchased, and they also ran a backfiring test on the engine. They received vacuum results lower than what they should be and with my mileage at 59,650, my engine is still under warranty.

They are calling Mazda direct on Monday morning to seek a new engine for me. They said it is a 50/50 chance in me getting a new engine. If I dont get one, I will kick up hell because having vacuum results below 'normal' is a failure of a vacuum test in my opinion, which means a new engine.....and I am still under 60,000!!!! Just! no driving this weekend!!!

Drivetrain warranty is good to 5 years, 60k miles.

They applied it retroactively to '06 and earlier at the same time as the 4206f recall. Kind of a good will/comfort gesture to counter the negative publicity.

'07 and '08 come with the 5/60 powertrain warranty, but bumper-to-bumper has been shortened to 3/36.

^yup, powertrain warranty is now 5yrs/60k. If you're under 60k it's on Mazda. Some dealerships have done engine replacements under warranty for people just out of warranty (~65-70k) - so don't let your dealership tell you they can't do it under warranty.

Good luck.

hmm, can i have them just run the vacuum test for free if i say "it seems to idle rough" just to see what the results are? I also have a compression gauge i got when i had my talon. can i just pull the plugs and do it like i would have done with my talon?

Warranty for 05/06 models was extended to 5/60.

There was a service bulletin for a recall in relation to the vacuum test which I printed off and gave to Mazda - it is a 'voluntary recall'.

I told them I was having intermittent rough idles, and it stalled on me once. They ran the vacuum test and now im waiting and hoping Mazda gives me a new engine.

TSB I took to Mazda - http://www.rotarynews.com/node/view/822

hey guys i'm new to the group, bought my 04 (54plate with 51k miles) rx8 2months ago, already had problems, my starter is eventually going, so embarassin last time it went was outside a club had to push it with my friends before 2am wen the club closes and people start to come out!

As i'm not under warranty i think uk dealers charge 20% of the cost for recall issue's however it does feel like the car is lagging, i don't know if its me being paranoid but i am sure it is lagging in power, also i think there's a leake in my antifreeze :s
