Starter Motor Advice Please

1 Attachment(s)
Hi all! New forum member from the UK I own a 2004, sunlight silver 231 manual trans... Basically I purchased a uprated 2kw 13 tooth starter from http://www.spidermarine.com/showitem...ooth%20Starter

Had it shipped to the UK but it doesnt quite fit right! I dont understand why, its not an auto starter as they look totally different, it looks exactly the same as the oem starter but one of the bolt holes is way out does not line up at all, has anyone else purchased this same starter from spider marine?

I was wondering could I just swap the motor and internals onto my existing n3h1 starter casing to make it uprated ? Is this an easy enough job to do?

any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks

i believe this shouldve been a recall, the dealership shouldve replaced it for free...or you could go to your autoparts store and ask for an 07 starter and it wouldve bolted right up.

Dozer, you should know that your statement isn't accurate :)

The starter upgrade was a TSB, not a recall, and may not have applied to UK models.

But his isn't isn't the starter upgrade, it's the bolt pattern appears to be different.

Richie, are you are you had it oriented correctly?

In theory, you could swap the internals.

Hello Richieroo,
Thanks for taking the trouble to warn for the Spiderman-starter on the Dutch RX-8 forum.
This is very kind of you!!!! :3some:
I wish you all the best in finding a good solution for your existing problem.
Best regards,
Ruud

it's not hard to swap the internals, assume you know how and have all tools and dielectric grease

but how far off is it ? you sure u install it right ?

in the uk unfortunatley the starter was not a recall :-(

I am definitely fitting it correct it's literally 2 bolt so very easy to fit and the bolt hole is nearly an inch too short! Also another member from the uk ordered the same part and has the exact same problem! I may swap the motor over see if this helps my original slow starter.

dozer is correct.

I know because the only 'problem' I had with my 8 was a non-start due to a weak battery in 14 degree (fahrenheit) weather, which the dealership graciously replaced for free (they removed the stock Panasonic battery, which were known to be weak units, and put an Interstate in; total goodwill).

As icing on the cake, the dealer service department manager told me they replaced the stock starter motor with an upgraded, stronger unit, due to a TSB, even though it wasn't necessary (because the battery replacement solved the problem), as insurance against future issues.

Hey, I'm the guy from the dutch RX8 forums where you warned me for this problem. I received mine 2 days ago and had Mazda *try to* install it today, but they called and said it doesn't fit. Same problem as you have.

Did you shipped it back or did you replace the internals ?
I guess since my 8 is a US (manual) version instead of your UK's maybe they had different starters (ether the 2004 or the newer version) and it would fit. False hope :(

Edit: I do see now that under engine type year it doesn't mention 2004-2005 models.. Did they change the starter shape in that upgrade?

Hi I tried to swap the internals but the uprated parts were too big for the original casing, I sent it back to spider at a cost of £30 they gave me a full refund, but still I'm £30 out of pocket for the return post. I have since purchased an uprated starter from the uk cost me £150 and the difference is amazing has cured the hot start symptoms for now.

Did they refunded the shipping costs (from them to you) too? They only want to refund the costs of the thing itsself (125$) but the shipping costs (62$) are on my part. And I have to ship it back to them too.. which is even more expensive with our postal service >_>

Richieroo 06-17-2012 08:10 AM

Yes they refunded me the full amount $186. If they do not refund you this tell them you will open a dispute with PayPal, that's if you paid with PayPal..

I did, thanks!
