Start trouble
 

My rx8 has almost 1k miles on it. I've noticed it sometimes takes 2 tries to get it started. I dont' like cranking it so it doesn't flood.


Haven't had a problem in the past it started right up. Anyone else notice this?

If it's having problems now to get started I just can't wait till winter.

Maybe it just needs more revvving.

You may just not be giving it enough "key" to start it. Does it typically not start when cold in the morning, during a hot start, what?

Just trying to eliminate user error from "by design".

Mazda designed it to take a little longer to crank before firing - about 1-2 seconds of cranking before the engine lights. The RX-7 was/is the same way.

Hot start after it sits for a bit. Morning starts haven't had a problem. Starts after 2 seconds.

I crank it for about 4 seconds then try again.

Maybe I should crank it a bit longer then I'm used to.

my car is the same way,starts almost instantly in the morning stone cold and when warm cranks like 2 to 3 seconds before it fires off.never owned a rotary before so i contribute it to the design.when warm i just crank till i see the white dash lights start to come on and it starts every time.

ive noticed, as well as some others, that it has a slight delay on starting, like you twist it, release it, then it starts

and also that it does seem to take slightly longer to start than a piston engine

Hmm you haven't tried to start my jeep lately... It's got 20k miles on it now and generally takes 5 seconds of cranking (sometimes a little more) especially if you haven't started it for a while. I attribute it to building fuel pressure or something and just live with it.

My rx8 generally starts within 1 or 2 seconds of cranking, and I can't say I've noticed any difference between hot and cold starts yet. I did think it turned over a little slower than other rotaries I've had the pleasure of starting, and I'm guessing the higher compression might be the explanation for that (although could be anything - I'm sure the starter is different from the FC or FD) I have about 1500 miles on it so far and I dont recall it starting any differently back when it was <500miles.

hmm.. try this. turn the key to the on position and leave it there for a second or 2 until the dash fully lights up. if you listen closely you here a noise from the engine, which i attribute to the oil injectors doing their job. then turn the key and crank it. it will start in about 3 seconds. i do this every time cold or warm and have not had the delay that your speaking about.

This may go away as the engine breaks in. My 1989 Convertible RX-7 doesn't have cold or hot start issues, and the engine has 122K miles on it.

I believe the starter spins the motor at 1500 rpms (vs 800rpms or so for a piston engine), so it's not a lack of rpms or cranking amps.

Tried to start a velocity red yesterday and it took about 1-2 seconds to start.

I'd like to know what kind of car that has a starter that cranks the engine to 800rpms. My car it is about 75rpms. (50 rpms on a cold start in the winter to 100rpms for a hot restart in winter)

I've had the same "problem" but have decided it is an operator issue not a car issue. Now I just look at the tach and have not had a problem since. The engine is so smooth that you just can't feel it when it starts like a piston engine -- since I started using the tach as a guide instead of "feel" I haven't has an issue.
