Start/stop procedure
 

I would like some feedback about whether or not this is the correct procedure?

There's no special start/stop procedure. You start it like any normal car, and stop it like any normal car. No need to rev the engine when stopping it. People think it stops the engine from flooding. But I read on this forum that by revving the engine, you're dumping more fuel into the engine, thus, increasing the chance of flooding.

What you should do is wait until the engine has warmed up before you shut it off. That's the best thing to do. About 2-3 mins should be enough after a cold start.

Sounds reasonable.

I would add a note that you do not ever stop the engine within two minutes of starting it - the car runs rich at start-up and this makes a flood much more likely, if you do forget something, and need to shut the car down, follow his 'rev&stop' step to avoid the likelihood.

Yeah if your ignition is strong it shouldn't really be a problem. As for the revving thing, the idea is that you rev it up and turn the car off while the engine is at like 5k, so as it spins down it will blow out any remaining fuel. Once in a while I will do that if I haven't had a chance to run the engine more than a couple minutes after cold starting. I have also seen mazda techs do it.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Now I have a better idea of what do to when taking a short trip after a cold start.

You should also familiarize yourself with the new owners sticky. It will fill you in on all you aught to know

Its about the 4k Rev for 10 Secs when its cold.. when It its not warm when you shut it off .. IE you move it out of the Garage for a wash. Rev it to 4k.. and hold it.. not 2.5 k.. Rev it to 4k.. Hold it for 10 secs and then shut it off.. This Burns the Fuel and carbon out, and keeps it from flooding as its cold. This has worked well for me since 2004.

I have never flooded my motor by stopping it cold, even with low compression.

I start it. Pull it out of the garage. Stop it. Wash it. Start it. Pull it into the garage. Stop it. It starts up again just fine.

The key is strong battery, strong starter, strong ignition system.

If you need this convoluted procedure, your car needs a tune-up.

Personally never had an issue with flooding the engine in the two rx8s I've owned (S1,S2). Dealerships never had an issue with the 8 not starting up again when I do oil changes and etc and I doubt the techs are aware of these potential issues when they service it.
