Squeaky shift boot
 

Does anyone else notice squeaking coming from the shifter? As we know, the shifter in the '8' vibrates a bit, and in my car when the shift boot material rubs together, it emits a "squeaking" noise. It's not usually too bad at highway speeds. I mostly notice it when I'm in town and have it in 2nd or 3rd gear.

I've been trying to figure out if there's a way to stop the noise. Strangely, it's becoming a bit more pronounced lately. Of course, I realize this isn't really a big deal, just a bit of an annoyance. I figured I'd ask in case one of you bright, innovative types has come up with a solution.

I have had the console apart putting in a radio. There shouldn't be anything in the area of the shift boot material that would squeak. There is the leather cover and a padding material under it. Sounds like somthing deeper. Take it in or take the cover off and see if there is anything under there squeaking. You can find instuctions on remove by searching under MP3 player install

Are you saying that the shift boot is rubbing together? I didn't know there was that much slack in the material.

Yes, morotormotor, the shift boot is rubbing together, making a squeaking noise. I know that's what it is because when I put my fingers down in between the material, it stops the noise.

And no, I'm not going to drive around with my fingers down in there! :p

I really don't know how to go around this problem of yours. I would suggest using a leather dressing or something to keep it slick so it doesn't squeak.

Thanks. Yeah, I've tried a leather conditioner, not knowing what else to do, and it didn't make much difference. I wonder if this is a rare occasion when Armor All might help?

I'm surprised others don't have the same problem. We all have the same shifter. Is it possible mine has excess bootage? :)

conditioner could be the problem rather than the cure. Clean it well with a mild soap. See if getting it a little less slick stops the slippage which is causing the squeak. You can always go back to a conditioner later.

Also it may be possible that the squeak is coming from the point where the shift knob contacts the boot collar. When you put your fingers on the material it may be just enough to separate that joint and stop the squeak. Try pulling the collar down a bit on the shift lever and put a couple of rubber bands between the knob and the collar to see if that helps.

Sorry, i don't have that problem...thankfully, it would probably drive me nuts!

I just started hearing the "squeaks" in my car and thought i was crazy. Glad to hear that others are having this problem and possible solutions.
