AT Speed - Auto vs. Manual Auto

Is there any difference is in the take off speed of an AT using manual drive instead of full auto?

How about when cruising, i.e. traveling about 40 mph in full auto and Honda Prelude V-Tech pulls up and wants to dance. Am I better off just jumping on it in full auto or switching to manual, then drop it into 2nd or 3rd gear to get the higher rpm take off?

The above scenario did happen but I wasn't in a position to take him up on it.
Any idea what would have happened? This guy lives in my neighborhood so I know we will meet again.

Typically I just pick fights I know I can win! or think I can anyway.
Foolish pride I suppose.
