So my engine blew a seal today...

EDIT: false alarm. engine is still pulling strong with no issues. The guy changing my oil totally overreacted and jumped to conclusions from what he saw in my oil. I'm reading all the oil condensation froth threads and that's all it seems to be. compression test checked out fine at 99k and was fine again today. phew.

How did it "blow a seal"?!

blazenblue63 12-21-2011 04:39 PM

Fuck is putting it mildly...

9krpmrx8 12-21-2011 04:42 PM

Well anyone close to the 100k mark or 8 year mark would have to be crazy not to have gotten a compression test prior to the warranty running out. Sorry Buddy.

blazenblue63 12-21-2011 04:54 PM

Agreed. that's what I'd do but I'm never even going to hit the 100k mark so I'll do it at the 8 yr mark. I'm at 52k and put 3k a year on it.

Sounds like your oil changer is use to seeing piston engines with blown head gaskets/cracked blocks and not rotary engines.

Nubo 12-21-2011 05:37 PM

What rotary engines and pinnepeds do in private is none of my business.

jasonrxeight 12-21-2011 06:28 PM

engine oil condensation has nothing to do with blowing seals.

I thought the same thing when I saw your grossly oversized picture, was that really necessary?

Mazurfer 12-21-2011 06:49 PM

That seal had quite a load.

monchie 12-21-2011 08:16 PM

You tricked us with that title...lol

Anyway, at least you made it to the 100,000+ miles. Mine's an 05 and i only have 34k+ miles.

Yeah this was exactly it.

Everything is fine thank god. However, even the mazda dealership jumped on the blown seal conclusion as soon as they saw the frothy crap on the dipstick. Luckily one of the mechanics took a second look and found the ventilation TSB related to this issue before making me painfully decide if I wanted to replace the engine (which went out of warranty last week) or not.

Apparently they just recently had an RX-8 owner who drove through some water, sucked it into the combustion chamber, and since water doesn't compress, blew out the seals.

^ Huh?

Two penguins are driving their truck to Las Vegas one hot summers day. As they are driving along, the engine starts to make weird noises and losing power. They pull into a repair shop to have it checked out. The mechanic tells them it's going to be awhile for him to figure out what's wrong with the truck so, they will have to wait.

The penguins notice an ice cream shop across the street and since it is such a hot day, they decide to indulge in a cool treat while they wait. They enjoy their snack as it melts and drips in the summer sun.

Upon returning to the garage they ask the mechanic if he figured out what the problem was with the engine. The mechanic replied, "Looks like you blew a seal".
The penguins responded, "No, that's just ice cream".

That water must have been up to the headlights... probably shouldn't go back to this dealership.

I think you should find a different dealership to work on your car.
