So long, RX-8

Just read this article:
http://www.autoblog.com/2011/08/22/m...-8-production/

Made me think back to what a great car the RX-8 is/was. I bought a new 2004 model in 2005, my first (and last so far) new car purchase. It gave me some problems but I absolutely loved it.

Sold it for a B6 Audi S4, which gave me far more problems than the RX-8 ever did. Last year I ditched the Audi and got a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X. The Evo is a little front-heavy (not as bad as the S4 was), but the power and AWD are a great trade-off.

I'm sad to see this chapter of the RX history closing. The RX-8 was a fantastic car that wasn't afraid to be different. Hopefully coming years will see a new rotary with just as much passion and soul, and maybe a bit more power ;)

B6 S4's are nice cars. Too bad you had bad luck with yours.

And yes, the rx8 is a fantastic car.

Yeah mine was CPO, which helped, but it was unbelievable how often I had it in the shop. The ignition coils failed one at a time, and the dealer refused to replace them all at once, so I had it in at least three times just for that. They later had a recall for them. Then there was a horrible oil consumption issue that the dealer never tracked down. I had to keep 4-5 quarts in the car when I'd go on road trips. On the plus side, fantastic interior, great V8 noise, sleeper factor.

I always wanted an rs4. They're both great cars though, except in your case it sounds like.

Mazda managed to move a mere 1,134 of the models last year, ...

Does this mean my 2010 is 1 of only 1,134 made? Pretty cool if that's true.

I think that was of the 2011 models and in the US. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But i'm sure they didn't move alot of 2010s either.

adoihcj, seems it would be true if that article has the facts correctly published. sad to see the RX-8 go truthfully. it had a good run and is a great car!! it was on the market for 7 model years and in those 7 years, established itself as one of the finest affordable sports cars on the market.

jasonrxeight 08-22-2011 06:27 PM

Ive driven many many high performance cars. none of them delivered what my R3 does.

monchie 08-22-2011 10:17 PM

Goodbye. Hope you enjoy your new ride.

Sleep well RX. We'll be waiting for a rebirth.

The Rx8 has been classified by some people as an environmentally unfriendly vehicle: burns oil, low MPG and the sales have been very sluggish for the past few years. Everything has to be politically correct and eco friendly...sad world we live in.
I hope Mazda wont abandon the wankel engine. Looking forward to see what they come up with in the next few years.

speaking of EVO, they also are dropping that too.
burns oil and low MPG is not the reason people dont buy them. I dont see Vettes and other V8 machines stopped selling.
the problem is the engine, its different thus people are scared. like you for instance.

I've never been a huge fan of the NA V8 S4's. I sold my RX-8 for a B5 S4 and I absolutely love the 2.7t. There were some things that needed work when I first got the car, but I haven't had a whole lot of new problems show up in the year I've owned it. Sucks to hear you had bad luck with your B6. Good to hear you're having better luck with the Evo and enjoying it.

Ah concept drawings.
Worse than prototype Concepts.
2013 Evo would solve the issue of becoming relatively irrelevant in this Eco-save the baby seals-world.

Evolution is going Hybrid? Honestly though, it seems like Mit is just taking a giant sh** on the Evo name. Lancer Evolution stood for power, speed, racing - Ralliart. All the while to get a large audience. But to keep a car alive, i guess manufacturers need to appeal to the daily driver.

I'm sure most of the people that buy cars these days came to the realization that sticking the word "Hybrid" or "Green" to a car doesn't automaticly grant it Prius MPG. But then again, I'm assuming car buyers look at more than 1 car when buying a car. I know that's not the case :)

Corvettes have twice as much HP and get 26mpg. When I bought an RX-8 recently, the reliability, poor fuel economy, and premium fuel requirement were the only things that kept me from getting an RX-8 much sooner. With the price of gas almost doubling in 5 years, I can imagine the poor fuel economy for the HP combined with requiring premium fuel have shut down the RX-8 as an option for many buyers in the last few years.

EightCostsMoney 08-25-2011 09:33 AM

It is just like the Honda CR-Z. It is not fast and not good on gas, what is the point? I heard they're going to stop making the EVO due to low sales, maybe I'm wrong. :dunno:

It's not a concept drawing, if you look closely it has the reflection of another car on the side of it. Look again, closer and you will see. plus drawings are signed at the bottom...

Lots of Camrys and Priuses out there for those who worry about that kind of thing.

That happens to be a half assed rendering based on the European civic. Enjoy.
