I dunno, DSC seems to work pretty well at lower speeds (like 10-40 MPH) but once you start getting to highway speeds, there's only so much the DSC can do when you're making sharp & sudden maneuvers.

TheWulf 07-09-2009 03:35 PM

DSC still works very well over 60 mph... don't believe me, try to run an AutoX course with and without DSC while taking corners as fast as you can. DSC prevents you from over-steering into a free spin. Ask me how I know ... :P

exsequor 07-09-2009 03:47 PM

ya DSC has helped me or possibly saved me when entering a corner too fast..didn't do shit on black ice with balding tires though

JinDesu 07-09-2009 03:48 PM

I'm pretty sure there's a lower limit to when DSC will trigger.

Doesn't apply to OP though, since he was going 70.

So it's $12k in damages.. Shop is ordering new OEM parts. It's not listed as total. Don't know if it's worth it even though insurance is paying for it. Hmm.. Will it drive the same?

Atilla 07-09-2009 05:21 PM

unfortunately, from my experiences...no, it won't be the same.

I could be wrong, it's just people have taught me otherwise. People being those 'mechanic's' and auto repair guys that 'restored' my old cars :icon_no2:

I really wish you the best of luck tho. I hope the people working on your car are better than mine.

exsequor 07-09-2009 05:27 PM

$12k in dmg and no total? isnt it pretty much your choice at this point? (im not sure as i dunno if you own it completely and how much yours is worth..)

Shijin-Kun 07-09-2009 05:29 PM

at most an 06 is worth like what? 15k?

tunerwannab 07-09-2009 05:36 PM

Just find a really good shop. It can be done right. Good chance to get some cool stuff, MS front, new rims, coilovers maybe.

RotaryP7 07-10-2009 07:53 AM

My insurance didn't give me the option to call it a total. As for getting the cool stuff.. Wouldn't the insurance say wtf? MS kit? They have to sign off on the parts and labor for the car so I'm guessing they'll see what's stock and what's not. But mmm.. I'd sure like to try and see if I can get them to change my rims to the R3 ones. :)

Wait time.. 1 month.. :crying:

I'd assume your car is listed by the insurance at near 17-18k. To total, it needs 75% of that, so you are on the borderline (albeit below). I would ask for the estimation in parts to be provided to you. The insurance doesn't care what parts you or the shop gets to fix the car. It only cares that the car is restored to original condition after the repairs. But my experience is that the insurance will very rarely provide you with enough to go aftermarket.

tunerwannab 07-10-2009 10:40 AM

I say rims since it sounds like 2 need to be replace so about 1k there. That is enough for new rims. I don't know the cost of factory suspension parts but I'm sure it is a ripoff at the dealer price just like the wheels.

CarAndDriver 07-10-2009 11:35 AM

$12K worth of damage - sorry, but am not surprised after seeing those pics. I am surprised that totalling out was not an option. You might want to ask.

MICHGoBlue 07-10-2009 12:33 PM

If the insurance doesn't budge, see if they can just cut you the check for the damage (might be a hard sell since it's over $10K).

Shell out an extra few thousands of dolllars and see if you can get a good used rx8 (assuming you want the same car, that is).

Put the damaged car and sell it on ebay/autotrader/cars.com as an salvaged vehicle, you should get at least a couple of grand for it.

Along with some psychological effects, the car will not drive the same, I gaurantee it.

lol, i got SO confused seeing "psychologiocal" :D

The insurance can give options to cut a check to you or the repair shop. They MAY take off a percent if it goes to you under the "labor fee" excuse. Find out all your options before you accept everything. And DEFINITELY read the estimator's full report.

RotaryP7 07-11-2009 06:17 PM

Hmm.. Damn, what do I do? :shocking:

lol.. I hate accidents..

04RX8man 07-11-2009 06:42 PM

If you could total it I prob would!...just go get another!

636 07-11-2009 08:29 PM

Retarded ...if i saw that happen to a fellow 8 owner i would chase down that fucker and give an ass whooping.

tunerwannab 07-11-2009 08:55 PM

When my car was vandalized my insurance cut me a check 5min after they did their inspection/estimate. My check was for 6k

Since I unfortunatly have experince in repairing bent race cars I can answer this question for you: yes. In fact, I would buy this car in a heart beat if it were totaled and fix it. The rear end is fine. The weak link on the rear suspension is the front lower control arm. It's as big as a pencil is and usually the first thing to go with rear contact. The shortening of this arm results in additional toe-in. Anytime we have a rear toe change we check it.

There are two cost drivers that I see:

-The bent rear 1/4 panel which is a pain to replace/fix
-All the little semi-structural parts in the front end. Lots of little guys that require you to invest some time and effort. Like most cars, the front is designed as a crumple zone. Your car should drive fine.

For those of you that want to learn something---here it is: Look in and around the front frame-rail like structures paying special attention to just in front of the shock towers for anything bent or crumpled. The primary issue that you (and your insurance estimator or body shop guy is looking for before you get the car on the frame rack) is the integrity of the car BETWEEN the shock towers. Your cars hit looks like it has not influenced damage beyond the front axle (at least thats what I see from the pix). Car should be fine.

Here is a simple video of how a frame rack works and most likely what the collision guys will do to your front right:

http://www.ehow.com/video_2327387_ho...aightened.html

A very good friend of mine owns a higher end body shop and I've seen cars come in that look like they should be smashed into coffee tables and they repair them. One time a turbo 911 porsche came in WITH THE FRONT BUMPER JUST ABOUT AT THE FIREWALL and a few weeks and a new paint job later an untrained eye would never know the difference. Your car will be fine.

Grant696 07-15-2009 11:58 PM

Glad that you're okay. You should have hit him anyways, it would have been quite the wake up call.

RotaryP7 08-27-2009 10:39 AM

So I just got my 8 back. ;)
Seems like I just got it from the dealer.. I cried of joy when I saw it.. It was embarrassing.

Aseras 08-27-2009 10:55 AM

Shijin-Kun 08-27-2009 10:59 AM
