I dont have a mazda dealer withing like 30 min of where i live so i was on my way to work and i figured a change at the quick change was better than waiting another week till i could get over to the dealer. So i had my car at the dealer yesterday (2k miles after my last change) and they said the reason why my oil light was coming on was because my oil was really dirty and gunked up and they were asking what kind of filter was on my car because they have never heard of the brand before and when was the last time i had the oil changed. They thought it had been like 5k miles or so. I know the TSB has not been done because the oil light has always come off and on even after oil changes when i know the oil is at the right level, i also check it too and it is in the right spot. So i guess i will not use the quick change places anymore, no matter how convenient... So i fully expect to get my car back after the fresh oil change and to have the light come back on and have to take it back at some point again...

tried a quicklube once. they put synthetic in my engine. they didnt even ask what kind of oil I wanted in my car. just did it. asked and they told me. didnt have to pay a dime. went down the road 15 minutes to the mazda dealer. will have them do it if I am unable to do it myself because of being too busy and what not.

You can change your oil ANYWHERE ! as long as you keep your receipt. Dealership has no right to deny any warranty work or question you.

but one problem with Quick Lube place is that, as reported on the news a while ago (Jiffy Lube), some of them actually never change your oil, you drop the car off, wait in the waiting room, 15 minutes later they move the car back out, and tell you that its done. they just think that everybody is a moron. good lord they caught them on hidden cameras.

So Dont be lazy, change it yourself, 30 minutes the most (if you have the tools), and just make sure you keep all the oil receipt.

dont have my 8 yet, but is it that hard to change the oil yourself for these cars? or is it so bad that you need to take it to a dealer (not cheap i'm sure)

oil change takes 5 mins. install a fumoto valve. then when you want to change oil, flip the switch, it drains, then flip the switch again to seal.

how trustworthy is the valve?

How trustworthy is a copper crush washer?

I wouldn't bring the car of someone I hated to a QuickLube place.

Ive been using them since I bought my car...The guy is big into rotary's so no problem from them .

What it takes to change oil in Mazda RX-8.

1. 6 quart low profile oil drain pan. (Advance Discount Auto Parts)
2. 19mm socket or wrench
3. 5 quarts of Castrol GTX 5w-30 oil
4. Purelator PureOne oil filter. (no FRAM)
5. Rag towels under the oil drain pan and filter. (under the person if you want to keep clean)
6. 15 minutes and one person. (can be accomplished using only one hand)

No Floor Jack required. Be sure to put in a washer if you don't see any on the oil drain bolt.

Just swap out the oil for anything that is NOT Castrol and that list is golden.
The K&N 1010 filter is good as well, as is the Mobil One (Which is a re-branded PureOne).

Unles things have changed, Mobil-1 filters are made by Champion Labs and are not a Purolator based filter. The Mobil-1 filters are also 2-3x more expensive as the same filter labeled as another brand such as STP and several other brands.

Anyhow, I trust the quick change places more than dealers, dealers are the worst when it comes to oilchanges. I have a couple quickchange places that I trust, but whenever possible I just change my own oil.

My friends who autocross recommend Castrol GTX for all-round-use. They have all sorts of cars that are high-rev and small engine. (Civic Type-R, MR2)

My oil change routine (every 4500-5000 miles):
Wix filter
new plug with crush washer
Royal Purple oil
30 minutes (mostly just waiting for oil to drain fully)

Just under 50k on car and purring like a kitten. Changing the oil is not something i consider time consuming or hassle. Put some love into your baby.

I hear that Wix Filter is better than Purelator PureOne. The trouble is that not all the local stores have it on shelf. Even Purelator can't be found in WalMart or AutoZone.

You're gonna get 1500 different answers on oil and filters and everything will be re-hashed again.

I for one believe you should be able and actually change your own oil.
Both my girls do....it's not rocket science by any means and there is no better way to know your car than to do some work on it yourself.
If you go to quick change places or the dealer, then you get what you get. :icon_no2:

The Napa filters are the same as the Wix, so if you have a Napa in your area just buy their filters if you want the Wix.

I read an article on all the filters through a link from nicoclub forums.
One guy cracked open all the filters and evaluated the material and construction of each filter. WIX and Purelator were the best rated. FRAM was the worst with cheap paper filter and valves that don't work right.

Yeah, it also mentioned how NAPA filter and WIX were almost identical except for external construction.

True......but it was more about using quick change oil places, not oil. :uhh:
