Snap, Crackle, POP!

After a good drive, once you're parked, get down on your knees and listen. Sounds like Rice Krispies!

Any technical explanation? Is it just thermal expansion and contraction?

you mean the sound that sounds like ticking and all taht from the underbody?

heard it before, never figured much of it since my protege would do it to just not as loudly.

Also love how long the fans stay on, often get people at work stating my car is still on.

No, No, thats just my heating for my cup holders cooling down.

Do you fans go on after every drive? Mine don't. Today I drove 22miles home at night, mostly highway, and when I got home and parked, the fans didn't come on. I wonder what actually triggers them because it seems random to me.

it IS thermal expansion and contraction from your cat and exhaust, being that the rotary puts so much heat out the pipe, I'm not surprised that it does that.

In some engines that runs really hot it's considered a bad thing, my old boss's RV did that all the time (V8 powered) and when he went in for a repair they tried to remove the head and half the bolts broke because of thermal expansion and contraction work that had cracked them over time.

Fans coming on is triggered by the temp. of your coolant, if it's cooler out they probably shouldn't come on since the engine will be running a bit cooler when you turn it off. that'd be the case at night.
