smarkey question, code number

So I bought the 8 used, now where is my code number? LOST?
I bought a used smartkey on Fleabay
of course key did not work so had one cut at the local key maker for 4 bucks
It unlocks the door and turns the ignition.
Now I guess I need to "program" the smarkkey? how besides the dealer?

supposedly you can't. when i bought mine they said that even the dealer wont be able to program the key without knowing that number, and if i lose the number, you have to order a new set of keys. So, according to that, youre SOL. it explains why its engraved on a metal tag... kinda important. but if you take apart the card, theres nothing to indicate what your code is, so if you think about it, they'd have to try every combination to get your key to work, which is pretty ridiculous.
the metal tag would've been on a little string attached to your keys when you bought the car new. its about 1/4 inch by 1/8 inch, and theres just a number on it, nothing to indicate its for a car or anything. so the original owner probably lost it or forgot what it was and threw it out.

But I still have the smartkey that came with the car. Can they not somehow scan it and tell?

I'd guess, "No."

If you've asked the dealer, what do they have to say about it?
If you haven't, ask them.

my dealer told me you can get the it to work without the code, but it would cost way more

So I ask him. He looks it up in his puter, books, and shows me

He does not have that, guess the dealer has it

Mazda customer service told me to contact a mazda dealer

To program a key to work with the immobiliser system yourself, you need at least 2 other keys that already work. If you only have 1 key then you are stuck paying the dealer. There are DIYs for programming not only the keys but the remotes as well in the DIY section, I suggest you start there.

I will try to go and write down the steps, course he will not want to give them to me cause If I program it myself, he does not make any monies
He was so excited seeing my car, I let him sit in it, that he forgot to charge me for the battery he installed in the smartkey remote. Have to go back and pay him
He said this is the first 8 he has seen in person.
He had not seen nor know about the smartkey card until he saw mine and looked it in the book.

wait, what is that thing? What's it for? Does it just do the same stuff the remote on my key chain does (unlock doors, pop trunk, panic button)? Why is it so big, what's the point?

Imagine a car that does not ever need a key......

You walk up to it, push a little button on the door and the door unlocks.

You get in and then start the car. Without putting a key in the ignition.

Then you stop the car. Walk away.

The doors lock automatically.

All the time, the credit-card sized thing never leaves your pocket.

......Well, Mazda did.

It's standard on 2006 to 2009 GT's, and Miatas, and all sorts of other Mazda's.

And, a whole lot of other cars.

Now I feel like an old man :'(

I want to live in that world. In mine, my credit card key breaks every 7000K miles. Mazda says it costs extra to turn on the auto lock function, $400 for a replacement key, and $100 to program it if I buy it on my own. Not to mention the rubber on the key button the DS door handle is tearing apart. All starting right after 36K miles.
