Shouldn't Mazda cover flooding under powertrain warranty?
 

My '04 is under 60k miles and after a body shop flooded it, the dealership is asking for $98. They said engine flooding is not covered under powertrain. I'll have it back in the morning.

You think your dealer could do you a courtesy, nvm, I didn't say that. I don't think it should be covered though, flooding is just the nature of the beast.

Consider billing the body shop?

I wouldn't do that to the body shop, it's not something they were aware of.

my 04 rx8 recently flooded, maybe a month or two ago and it was covered under warranty. i didn't have to pay squat. while my 8 was there, i told them to do the 40k mile maintenance that cost me about $200, it also included an engine cleaning as well. but yeah, didn't have to pay for the flooded engine. i got a new starter, new leading spark plugs and wires i believe.

Well, you could make the argument that if Mazda didn't think flooding was an inherent problem why did they make adjustaments to the flashes to address the issue. They'll deny that the re-flashes had anything to do with it but.........

It's quite hard to imagine that someone who works on cars does not know what flooding is. It's not like flooding is a localized problem just for the 8. It can happen to alot of cars. Stated in the previous thread i mean if it were me i would ask the body shop the reimburse you for your time and effort to get this done (if it turns out you have to pay). Since the car was in their care, they should have been kind enough to let you know they would pay for the stealership to deflood it if it was necessary.

But hey, if you don't want to get them involved that's up to you. It's very nice of you.

$98 for a de-flood is a great price. Most people get hit for something around $400.

Mazda has always been inconsistent about covering de-floods under warranty. It can't hurt to complain to MNAO. What you do want covered under warranty are the following upgrades (from the TSB) to your 2004:

- PCM firmware update
- Bigger battery (640 CCA)
- Bigger starter
- New design leading plugs

I already have those.

Maybe it is covered and the dealership just wants to screw you for the 98 bucks figuring you'd pay that and not the 400 :-P

i am guessing the $98 would only cover their deflood procedure - not the other "goodies" that come along with it. (answering for others since Raptor has already been upgraded with them)

Court cases are a love/hate thing for me. As lazy as I am I hate prepping the briefs but as competitive as I am, especially as a perceived "underdog", I love the oral arguments and watching opponents just squirm when they realize they underestimated me. If I could feed my family in the interim it would be fun to file the federal case against Mazda for a host of "Causes for Which Relief May Be Granted" and ask for class-action status to be granted.

Only the powertrain goes to 60. Whatever that fucking means. The only thing that would cover is if an n/a engine magically fails, or some part in the transmission besides the clutch disc fails.

I think the new starter is only like $380 from Rosenthal, could you put it in yourself?

I'm sure you know this...but just get a friend to tow you in gear for a a little bit, its free and you get to leave a white smoke trail for a bit.

As for free deflood under warranty, maybe not free because we get warned about it in the manual (i know this time it wasn't your fault), but if it should happen they should not charge anything close to $100.

I think it would be rather difficult ( meaning you would have to do this on purpose ) to flood any late model car EXCEPT the 8.

Bummer that it has already been towed to the dealer. When my cousin, who manages a body shop, had this problem he had his guys throw it in the paint drier booth and heat it up to 160 degrees farenheit. It kicked right over after that. I would stick the shop with the bill. They flooded it.

I has the starter TSB done and Mazda nicely gave me a faulty starter, which made it just past its 1 year warranty then croaked. I had an independent shop install a new Mazda dealer part, and it was much less than $550. Best of luck.

The 8 is pretty unique to excessive flooding, as it's covered in the manual specifically large, and people have it happen a lot. But as for flooding in general, if you don't know how to deflood an engine...uh, wut? It's been used for so many use, the pull start...

i just happened to think, isnt there a "De-Flood Procedure" thats in the owners manual? wouldnt that work?

this worries me, because i am going to go and check out the 2008 RX-8s this weekend either in evansville or owensboro. if the 08 RX-8 still has flood problems, and the de-flood procedure wont get it started..............:icon_no2:
