Should I buy my rx-8 now?
 

Hey guys.

This is my first post on these forums and I'm looking forward to being a member of this great community.

I'm looking to buy an RX-8, but have a few concerns first. (I've used the search function)

Basically, I'm gonna be around for about 6 more weeks and then I'm going out of the country until December.

I was hoping to get an RX-8 before I go, but I think having the car sit around for 4 months isn't great for the car. (I can have someone start it up every few days and drive it around the block) Furthermore when I get back it'll be the winter and I'm not sure how much I'll want to drive it then.

Will 4-7 months of very light use be bad for the car? Would you predict car prices to go up or down between now and then?

I feel that the RX-8's price is depressed because of gas prices and if they go down, RX-8's will rise in price a bit.

Any input here is greatly appreciated.

Are you buying new or used?

If buying new and you are looking at left over '08s, the longer you wait the less options you will have, because dealers are already knocking 6-8k off of MSRP to make room for the '09s.

I don't think the RX-8 has ever been a "hot selling" car, and even if gas dropped down to $2 a gallon, I doubt you will ever see high demand for a 16/22 car ever again.

If I was in your shoes I would wait until I got back. Why buy something that you will not be able to drive for 4 months?

I did a bit of reading about the engine flooding and basically what I understood is you need to let the car warm up before you shut it off again. Would driving the car around the block for about 5 minutes not achieve this?

I'm buying used.

The only reason I wanted to buy one now is because I have a lot of free time now to find the right one.
I'll be a little bit more rushed when I get back.

Also, let me toss in another question while I have this thread open.

Do most people not like the black/red interior? I LOVE it but I see so few with this interior. Why is this?

na, if u leave the car in someone else's care, the risk of them deciding to move the car and shut it down, then realizing tat the car won't start next time increase exponentially.

If you're buying new is one thing but if you're buying used its another story all together. It then becomes all about timing. The car can wait if you're going to buy a new one. If gas prices are going to keep rising, then gas guzzler cars and trucks might drop in price to try and get rid of them. If its a used, take your time. I just happend to get lucky when buying mine. Right time, right place, a stupid woman, and a Mercedes Benz dealership wanting to get the "cheap" car off the lot. Back in 07 I picked up a used 06 GT with only 6000 miles, and a set of winter tires on it for just over $20,000. I also got $10,000 from selling my old car. It took 4 months of looking and waiting but it came through.

I tend to think that the black and red interior only look good on black or red cars. Mine is weird because it its a Galaxy Grey but has a black and brown leather interior. I love the outside color and I love the inside color but the two don't go together. So I say it really depends on the color of the exterior.

I'd wait till i got back from vacation. You'll get a good deal no matter what because it'll be winter. I purchased my 05 in january with only 29,000 miles and bought it for $13,000, however i do work at a car dealership and get really good discounts. Winter is always the best time to buy a sports car, but if youo see one that you fall in love with then go for it. Good Luck!

Its hard to say where the economy will be in 5-7 months but right now is a great time to get into a used RX8. People are offloading them like crazy. I'm sure you can find a great deal esp on the 04's.

I like Black/Chapparal on GG... maybe it's just me...

How big is the flooding problem?
I'm relatively new at driving manual and when I switch to a new car I usually stall it like once getting a feel for the clutch.

It sounds like this is the perfect formula for flooding the engine.

I guess I can give it excessive gas to avoid this...

I'm gonna test drive one tomorrow and I'd hate to flood it!

i would wait. do not like the idea of trusting on some one to take care of my car.

you snooze, you lose. there are lots of '04s right now because most of them were lease returns.

I personally would not get a used rx-8 unless it was a like new car with very very low miles.. like under 10K. You are worried about somene taking care of your car for 4 months.. I would be worried about the person who "took care" of your car for the 1-4 years prior to you driving it.

Used means less warranty as well, though the extended warranty applies here so that area is covered. Bumper to bumper though would not be.

Cogs, I am worried about the person who took care of the car prior to my ownership.
I'm looking for one with low mileage. I really can't afford a new one right now since I'm a college student.

So you believe they'll be more expensive as a whole when I'm looking to buy because most of the cheap 04 lease ones will be gone?

No, actually there should be even more of the '04 lease returns when you come back..Im just saying it might not be such a good idea to even BUY an '04 at all.. First year of the RX'8 was known to have many problems engine wise. I would be very very careful in picking an '04 and make sure you have good maintenance records. Perhaps consider an '05 or newer.. Lots of good deals now in RX-8's. If you go used, I would wait. If you want new, its now or never. The new design as usual for any car has turned off a alot of people. Add great deals on new ones coupled with the look that I as well as many others prefer and you have a recipe for fast sales.

Then again, it all depends on where you are living... Sun drenched states like mine, they move relatively fast...

04s are fine except the warranties are running out.

I'd definitely wait. I don't see prices on the RX-8 going anywhere but down.

Also, I'd probably avoid the 2004s. Yeah, someone people haven't had any problems with theirs, but why take the risk?

Prices are so cheap on the RX-8s anyway, you should be able to get a newer model year for not much more $$$.

Unless we get bad inflation, in which case, you will have more pressing concerns then buying a car.
