Sell the whole car or part it out?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone on here had any ideas on this subject. I'm looking at getting into an ND miata and praying the RX-vision sees the light of day, but in the meantime I've got an 8 I can't have sitting around collecting dust. Am I better off selling the car, trading it in or parting it out? It is a 2005 GT, 135,000kms, has a newly rebuilt engine, Cobb AP, BHR ignition, BHR midpipe, R3 rims, steel braided brake cables and a lighter flywheel. The back wheel wells are beggining to see signs of corrosion as well as older rock chips in the paint (this is the main reason I want a new car, a new paint job is likely to the tune of 6k here in Alberta Canada). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It all depends on your ability to tackle the job. Do you have access to ship parts? Do you know how to remove parts yourself? Etc.

This isn't really an opinion that can be answered by others who have zero idea what your capabilities are...

Post some photos of the rear wheel arch. Just want to see how bad it is.

The corrosion could be worse

I would fix the rust before it gets out of control and then sell it. (I personally would keep the car because I love my RX so much)

That's not terrible. However, if you can't have a whole car there as it is, imagine having a car there in a decrepit state from parts missing. You'll sell some of the commonly needed items quickly but you'll have a lot left over that will be difficult to sell. I would personally just sell the entire car as is. The rust isn't terrible and the car could make a new owner very happy.

it will be more work to part out but you can probably make more money that way.

There are simple things you could part out : the Cobb, the BHR ignition and exhaust. That's easily $1000 right there, just replace with stock parts. R3 wheels are in demand too, easily another $1000. The flywheel won't be worth the effort to get it off (and replace with what?).

I've always made more money by parting out mods, then selling the car in stock form.

What did you end up doing with your car?

westgman 09-05-2016 09:47 AM

I ended up selling the car and getting an ND miata, still lurking around here though in case I get my hands on an R3 and watching for the new RX. Still stuck with my COBB too, if you know anyone who needs one, send them my way.

I'm sitting on the fence right now. My engine seized, so I'm debating selling it as is, parting it out or getting the engine rebuilt. Who rebuilt your engine by the way? Can't say I know anyone that would be interested in your Cobb, sorry.

Post it for sale in the sale section.. the cobbs tend to sell quick around here.

I had Conroy Ganson rebuild mine, he has a shop just outside of Sherwood Park, but it cost a small fortune, 6500. The only other place to take it is rx7 specialities in Calgary, either way I'd expect to be paying at least 6k for the rebuild. I did put the COBB on the classifieds here and no one seems to want it. I've had it on for at least a month. I know it took me forever to buy mine from here because you had to be on them so quick when they came up for sale.

Thanks for the info on your rebuild. I got a quote from Adam at RX7 Specialties for $5500 but I'm sure it would end up being more. At minimum I probably would require a new rotor and rotor housing. Anyways, I'll just mull it over for now.

Cheers
