Security

My last car was stolen, that's why I have this beautiful beast. Anyway, it was clear that my last car (honda, duh) was stolen with a real key. From what I know a VIN called in by a dealship can get another key produced just like that, and sometimes with no verification whatsoever.

What precautions have you folks taken to secure your car. Yes it has an alarm, (not very sensitive), yes the key has a chip in it....but what good is it if someone can get a new key for under $50 and steal your ride. Is this a worry with new cars.....what's the deal.

Put electrical tape over your VIN

wow.......so yeah anyway. lol

How hard is this car to steal and what are it's weaknesses regarding security. Please don't state the obvious.

Just do a 'search'. This has been addressed and I was trying to be nice and avoid the 'do a search' mantra.

Vin....

A key cut from VIN information would only open doors, the chip inside would not be 'registered' with your car's computer, therefore the car wouldn't start.

The chips do not 'get programmed' by the dealer, they are added to your computer's list of chips that are allowed to start. If that key is 'not on the list' the car is safe.
