Saying Goodbye after 6yrs of fun
I've had a blast these last 6 years with my RX8 however it's come to an unfortunate end. I had a wreck this past weekend in a rain storm. It got sideways in the rain and I slid into a light pole, the car was totaled due to damage to the firewall. I was the only one involved and I'm fine. I don't think I'll be getting another one at this time so it's time to say goodbye. Thanks everyone for the good times!

I haven't decided on the next car yet, I'm looking at a lot online but I need to get out for some test drives to really get a feel for them. I've looked online and for roughly 30k there are some nice cars out there both new and used. I've researched WRX, EVO, Camaro SS, Mustang 5.0, Genesis, used Vette (can't afford a new one!). I'm in TX so it's all flat and straight here so AWD isn't necessary and we really don't have many twisty roads either. After deductibles and stuff I'm getting almost 9K for it from Progressive and that will make for a nice down payment on a new car.

awww mannnn that suuuuuuuuucks
Glad you're ok though....
btw, since you're looking into getting a new car may i make a suggestion...
please don't follow suit n' buy a bmw.
I also recently test drove a genesis spec r n' it has a lot of power but very clunky in the turns (you'll definitely miss your 8 here)...the clutch is bleh n' the shifting is notchy.
A c5 base vette would be nice imo. Plenty of power and good handling. The prices for a used one shouldn't be too bad.
Best of luck to you tho

I test drove all the cars you mentioned above (and many more) when thinking of replacing my '05 6MT, and I couldn't find one that I liked better on balance.
(I'm not saying that you won't, though)
At this point, I'm actually thinking of buying one of the last 2011s, because I can only think of the Toyota FT86 or Subaru BRZ twins as a possible replacement, but the more I read about them, the less optimistic I am that they will fit the bill.
There are so few rear wheel, limited slip differential, reliable cars with the low center of gravity and proper weight distribution of the 8, that can do double duty as amazing handlers and comfortable, practical daily drivers, at anywhere near the price.
p.s. - Believe or not, I actually looked at both a manual 2012 Focus and a Mustang GT with the Gertrag tranny, because I get a Ford employee discount (don't ask me why I cross shopped two completely different cars - it's a long boring story). Well, there are many problems with the Focus (from interior trim to synchros to steering to electronic issues, not to mention the Focus idiotically has rear drum brakes on all but certain automatic trans models, and that the Mustang Gertrag MT82 transmission has been disintegrating at an alarming rate - I do not wish to get into a pissing contest about whether this is true; I have a friend whose father owns a network of dealerships and am getting the straight dope from him about the epic problem rates. It seems the more technology that's added now, the more things go wrong).
Good luck on your quest.

Thanks everyone, the tires weren't in the greatest shape and probably wouldn't pass inspection in another month or two of driving. The outside edge doesn't look too bad but with it being lowered and having negative camber the inside was going. I was making a left in that intersection trying to stay in the left lane and the back end spun out, my attempt to countersteer was no help as the back end came around way more than expected causing it to be completely sideways, it popped the curb and slid on the wet grass into the pole.

Sorry to see that nice RX8 all smashed up. We looked at 30+ cars when I bought my R3 and got my wife a VW GTi. WE are now looking hard at a VW Golf R - 250 horsepower and 4 wheel drive system.

It's also priced very high, all thing considered, and you're not going to get any wiggle room on that price (at least for now) given the limited supply.
They're going for 35k+ now new, and I think there's a lot of competition in that space at that price (for a compact, 256 hp car - I realize many aren't in the same category, but many V6s put out 300+hp now at less than 30k).
Aside from the AWD, it's not much more powerful than your wife's GTI, but at least VW did away with the DSG and went manual transmission only.

RotoR. - I agree with your analysis, but my wife and I also like a car that is comfortable on road trips - and the WRX STi / EVO type of car is just a bit harsh for 1,000 mile plus trips.

glad you're alright. Could have been terrible.
Not mentioned, but you can get into a 996 style 911 Carrera S or Carrera 4S for that price as well.
C5 Z06's can be had for less than 30k all day long.
