Yesterday I was driving on my favourite piece of road & came around a right hander to be confronted with a huge pile of s**t all over the road (we have lots of cows here in NZ) . Any normal car would have totally spun out & spat me off the road so i had an instant panic attack . Normally I turn the DSC off when im having a bit of fun but I left it on this time as the road was a bit damp . I'm soo glad I did because it just kept the car tracking perfectly - just a nice bit of four wheel drifting then straight back on line.
When I first bought the car I thought the DSC was for people who cant drive - I now always use it in the wet and am amazed how well it works.
Anybody like to tell us about similar experiences ?

Oh... shit!!!

I like having DSC but I have experienced a slide where it gave up and I had to rescue myself. The incident occured in November. It was a rainy 4 degree (38F) night and I still had the RE040s on the car. I took a left hand turn a bit quick and accelerated out and what I got was a big slide that DSC could not fix. The reason was that the tires lacked grip on the cold wet pavement.
I took two lessons from this. 1) put on my winters 2) DSC can do wonders but only if it has something to work with. The next day with the winters on the grip and DSC were both back to normal.

I have had 1 time since owning the car (a year next month) where the DSC came on and helped me avoid an accident :

I was driving home from an auto-cross, its a nice back road with a few good curves. I was going about 50-55 (the speed limit is 50) and I was going thru a curve marked 35mph (you know the warning signs that show the suggested speed for the curve). Anyway I was coming up to the corner and slowed to about 45 as I downshifted from 4th to 2nd (so I could get a nice punch coming out of the corner) well as I was coming up heel-toe downshifting the car I was on the brakes just as I was turning in and the car went into 2nd gear (but I guess not all the way) cause as I was turning about about 1/3rd thru the corner I went off the brakes and onto the throttle and the car suddenly made a griding noise and popped into neutral.....

So there I was, doing about 45-50 in neutral thru a fairly tight right hand corner.....I was hugging the inside white line of the road at the time, I felt the back end step out (maby a foot or two cause i felt the reflector 'bumps' under the back driver tire, but just for a second) the dsc came on and the car slowed down to about 40 and the car drove around the corner, in its lane.....no worrys.

I Have also had a little fun in the wet with the DSC. I was taking a long sweeping off ramp from the highway, I was going about 70mph thru it, I was cutting the wheel on/off harder into the turn harder than I needed, and I could feel the cars back end set out and then come right back in line, the car was un-spinable.

The DSC system in this car is REALLY good. On par with the system in the M-Benz.

Oh man, the stock RE tires were deadly when cold.

I will also say that I take the DSC off at auto-cross events, but I have run once on fun runs with the DSC on just to check it out. You can feel it come on, but its not so bad.

I found my lap times were about 2 secs slower (if I remeber) but over 4 fun runs they were all consistent, with in about 1/2 a sec of the same time. So while it might be a little slower, it is consistent.

Also I notice, it feels like the ABS acts differently with DSC on/off......

does anyone know is the EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) also turns off with the DSC or if it stays on?

Just wondering, cause I was thinking that mabey :

With DSC on you have : Stability Control, Traction Control, ABS and EBD
With DSC off you have : ABS only

Saved my butt on a few occasions (maybe).
Don't know why people insist on turning the thing off for everyday driving......

while i like dsc and have it on for moist and/or cold days .. i'd like a function to cut off ABS for dry and/or warm days .. it really annoys the hell out me by slowing down my stops

I probably would have been in 10 accidents by now if it wasn't for the DSC. When I first got the car I never had owned a sports car before, luckily this car is VERY forgiving if you hace TSC and DSC.

I think that's not right about the DSC. With the DSC off you still have traction control and ABS. Your EBD is controlled by the DSC so I don't think that would be on. You have to hold the DSC button down for several seconds and then that will turn EVERYTHING off.

i think that has been proven, i use to be in the group that thought you had to hold it down to get it totaly off, but after testing, i cant do anything more with 1 push vs 7sec hold of the button.

I was saying you CANT turn off ABS, you cant, it will always be on, I know that. I also know that the traction control and stability control are on or off at the same time, you cant turn 1 off and not the other. I was just wondering about the EBD.

so whenever its hot out you use the brakes hard enough to get the abs going?

On the track, I would like to have the abs off, i learned to drive fast on race tracks in cars with no abs, and I am pretty good at threshold braking ON THE LIMIT without lockup (or withough much :) ) I usualy find the abs start to come on JUST as im letting off the brakes in a turn or gate or something. It doesnt affect me to much, and im learning to deal with it :eyetwitch

keep in mind if the dsc is coming on hard, that more than likely means you would be having a lockup without it, and there is no way to apply the brakes as fast abs, or apply the brakes to differnt wheels (like the EBD).

Anyway, on a race track, I would like the car with no DSC, ABS, ect

on the street im glad to have abs, dsc, ect and leave everything on.

I had a similar incident last year, only it was an oily pile of dirt.

I leave DSC on all the time, rain or shine, fun or commuting. After all, it's not like I'm on a track where seconds matter. The only things that matter on public roads is the car not being crashed, my life, and the life of other motorists.

thank you.....i consider myself a good driver, i drive/have driven many diffent cars in many different forms of motor sports.......but even I dont think there is any reason to turn the dsc off on public roads.......

there is NOTHING you can legaly do with the DSC off that you cant do with it on.....NOTHING!!!

all that BS about gas miliage and such....is just that, garbage!

leave it on, take it to a track and THEN turn if off if you want.
