I can't really vote yet, my new 8 will be ready next week. I'm hoping for the best.

I just love the car. In fact I have only 3 items for a wishlist (all of which I am used to on our Audi Allroad):

1) Memory on the power seat. My wife is 5'1 and I'm 6'.

2) Auto up on the power windows. Again, our Audi has Auto Up/Down on all the windows.

3) Auto climate controls.

What in this price range?

It easily takes all of its competition which tends to be much pricier than itself!

Name a car that this car bows to under $30K!

Maybe this guy only races them for 100' for fear of the ticket and never gets it into its powerband.

Highly satisfied! Getting about 22 mpg unless I flog it passing folks but I'm out of town a lot, highways, just a bit of city driving. Wish for a bit more kick in the butt power is all, but since my 67 Lotus Elan, this is the most fun car I've driven - and the suspension is terrific for all the control it gives you - in town, dirt roads, whatever.

After 3 months and 3200 miles, My car and I have become ONE! This is truely a great machine. Gas mileage under normal driving conditions is between 18-19 mpg. I love the look and feel, especially at night with great dash lighting and nice exterior lights. All black leather interior with silver exterior. Plenty of room to drive my son and 2 of his friends to school with backpacks and sports equipment bags. My drive to work takes me on a 4 mile stretch of a winding, 4 lane highway. I can't help applying the gas into the turns and leaving the traffic behind, not to mention blasting the finely tuned Bose system. I can't wait to see what improvements Mazda makes in 2005.

Aren't the Evo and the WRX both quicker? I seem to recall 5.4 second times for one of those cars and much more usable power at low revs.

EDIT: This test says 5.3 seconds for the $29k Evo and 4.9 seconds for the $30k WRX Sti.

The RX8 is a great car. But don't fool yourself into thinking that it is faster than everything in its class.

Frank Patrick 05-07-2004 03:49 PM

VW Golf GTI
Dodge Neon SRT 4
Mitsu Eclipse GT
Ford Mustang GT
Honda Civis SI
Ford Focus SVT
ALL will Smoke the RX 8-by a handy margin.

VolareRX8 05-07-2004 03:57 PM

your might be correct about the Evo and the WRX but when you think about it you are paying 29000 for a Lancer with some upgrades even though its a Evo it will always be a Lancer. i dont think the Evo is in the class with the rx8 maybe with price but not with style and the WRX well not to many bad things can be said about that car..anyways just giving my opinion no point intended

I agree and that's the reason I'm going to buy an RX8 over a WRX or Evo. But the post I was responding to said that the RX8 is faster than any car under $30k. He was wrong.

As for the other poster saying that he beat a Vette off the line--obviously the guy in the Vette wasn't trying (or is unskilled). The Vette will competely smoke the RX8 in a straight line (which is what these people are talking about, straight line performance).

Bottom line, it's a great track car, and if you want to do the high school drag racing thing, then go buy something different, and don't fool yourself into thinking that either of those two cars handle like an RX-8 does.

Motor Trend had a 0.88 g result for the RX8. (See this thread.) Road & Track also had a 0.88 g result. Car & Driver found 0.91 g.

So not only are they faster than the RX8, they handle equal or better.

Look, I'm an RX8 fan and should have one buy the end of this month. But the RX8 is not the quickest, fastest, or best handling car at it's price point.

There have been a lot of tangents on this thread, but this one will be more at home on the Competition Forum.

Preacher 05-07-2004 05:32 PM

Mitsubishi's are crap if money's an object,(imo they're crap anyway)and once that Soob runs out of warranty you're SOL as well.
(If they release a new 7 first this will be a moot point,as I'll be pre-ordering a new 7 whenever they come out-and the 8 might not stay in the garage, spec dependent-)
If no new 7,and I run out my warranty, then I'll rip into engine 'mods, but with the number of reflashes to the computer, numerous service bulletins and dealer "must-dos",
I'll keep mine 'stock' under the hood and see how it all plays out-
on Mazda's dime :D

Preacher, this is not for you in particular. Read my original premise for the thread....

Thanks, and keep it within the oroginal subject. If anyone wants to start a dirt fight....go to the right section.

I am totally satisfied with my RX-8. It handles a wide variety of drivinig situations with loads of style and comfort (excepting drag racing). In my opinion, there is nothing else at 30K that comes close in overall value.

Mick8 05-10-2004 10:19 PM

The GOOD - Incredible handling, show stopping looks, all the goodies....

The OKAY - The effect of the low torque at low RPM. Not as much punch as I want.

Love to drive it, look at it, and show it off!

Civic200hp 05-13-2004 12:14 AM

Well, I love the car. It has explosive power in the mid range RPMs. My beef with it is the crappy gas milage. I am feeding the beast weekly with rising premium gas. Also, the driver side blind spot is horrific. I have had the car about 2 weeks now, and I am still not used to it. One time, after I shut off the car, a fan came on from the engine compartment for about 5 minutes. I don't know what the hell that was, but when I put the key in the ignition and turned it to power (without starting the car), the fan then shut off. Maybe i need to read the manual more indepth. Other than these tiny things, I love the car. It handles great, and I it has so much more power than my EX 96 Accord.

Nancy Kizzee 05-13-2004 04:04 PM

the kizz--i love my rx-8 and so does everyone else who sees or drives it, but i sometimes don't get enough power under 30 m.p.h.

The fan is part of the cooling system. Once you put the key in, the system throught you'd be driving therefor not requiring the fan to run (that's why it shut off) - Get used to the fan since it'll be all too normal during summer time.

CypherSose 05-14-2004 04:13 PM

I've only had my 8 for two weeks, but I absolutely love the car. No regrets so far.

Jailbreak'74 05-20-2004 02:02 PM

My only complaint is really the gas mileage, but we were all aware before buying it. I love mine...waiting for a turbo package to come out.

the evo and sti will devour an rx8 on any track under any conditons. the closest competitor to the 8 in terms of performance (in the US) is an rsx-s. there are a few best motoring videos available on the web pitting rx8 against similarly priced competitors. in one of them an s2k, g35, wrx (non-sti), and rsx type r defeat an rx8 on a twisty track. but even if you look only at objective performance numbers like 1/4 mile, 0-60, slalom, etc. the 8 is somewhere between the rsx-s and wrx. test drive any of these cars and it will be immediately obvious.

rx8 looks better than evo or sti though.

ml2316 05-21-2004 12:46 AM

was i flaming? well i didn't refer to the rx8 as "shit" if that's what you mean. your overly emotional reply to a message you weren't even sure was a "flame" is obviously a reflection of some insecurity you have about your car. if you're going to take performance so seriously that you lash out when someone simply suggests it can't compete with a short list of other cars, maybe you should have bought a different car.

ml2316 05-21-2004 01:23 AM

you call the s2k, g35, evo and sti "shit". and *i'm* the troll. ok.
