Rx8's and long distances?
 

2005 rx8 with roughly 68k miles on it and putting another 4k miles to drive it home, any worries i should have?

have oil with you lol

I drove 18 hrs straight on one trip and 20 hrs back. I had no problems with mine. I wouldn't recommend driving that far without a rest tho. I won't next time.

I drove mine from los angeles to denver, colorado and back last winter, which was a total of about 3200 miles. The only special measures I took were changing my oil beforehand, and making sure my oil levels didn't get low. And of course another oil change when I got back to be on the safe side :P. I had about 20,000 miles on it at the time, and I didn't have a single problem driving it straight 1600 miles there and 1600 miles back. In my opinion I wouldn't worry about it, I don't think you'll drive straight 4k miles? I drive 12 hours a day at work and that drive was pretty killer one way. Also, I go about 200 miles to LA and another 200ish back every other weekend. My 8 still runs like the day I bought it, never had to replace a thing.

I dunno about taking long trips with TC/SC, but I would assume that would put a bit of a damper on things...

I do alot of 6-10 hour drives in my 8 and love it. No other car I would prefer to do it in. Comfortable for me and easy to spice up stuff to keep my attention focused.

I am planning on driving to Sevenstock this year and then up PCH and back, 7,400 miles total. Have no qualms about it at all.

Im driving from St petes florida to st johns newfoundland canada, its a long fucking drive we are taking our time of course plenty of rests

are yu suppossed to have the 8 at a steady rpm's?

And I very much enjoy driving my 8 long distances, as well. It's comfortable, and always fun to drive :D I used to hate taking long trips, my jeep was too loud, accord too boring, s2000 way too uncomfortable (and blind spots are horrid in that car unless you take the top off).

On a trip like that you should just sit back, relax, keep your head on the road, and cruise in sixth gear....better gas mileage=a happy wallet. I don't speed :rolleyes: but 70mph in 6th gear = some pretty good gas mileage, I was extremely surprised by the mileage I got on my colorado trip, i spent about 2/3 of the money i set aside for gas.

i've taken my car for a 4900 mile round trip and just recently a 1800 mile round trip and not once was i worried about the car breaking down on me.
on that 4900 mile road trip i consumed maybe 3/4 quart of oil, and on the 1800 mile road trip, a very negligible amount.

Once it's broken in you can. I've always wondered why they specfy that for rotary break-in. Makes sense for piston engines, to help suck oil up to the rings, but rotaries are different.

Anyway, just set the cruise control and enjoy watching the scenery go by.

Also just remember any car can go out randomly so have 1st aid, some basic tools, food & water. Roadside kit and even personal defense. Don't swerve sharply for game. You don't want your tires hitting dirt or loosing control. Also keep traction control on if you have it. With that point steering wheel in direction you want car to correct.

Drove 12 hours straight through to Myrtle Beach from here last summer. Soaked up the miles with ease... just make sure you bring oil with you, I checked immediately after getting down there.

Gas mileage is surprisingly good over long distances, as I have a tendency to let the engine rev out locally and around town. I think I averaged 22 miles per gallon on that trip.

You are also assuming that dirt is what you will be hitting, when curbs, other cars, trees, guardrails, building, and people are other possible options :)

That being said, I'd never give the advice to "not swerve" to an 8 owner. Very few cars on the road have the capabilities we do in emergency maneuvers. Instead, give them them the advice to always leave a way out, since the circumstances will define if braking or swerving or accelerating is the right thing to do.

But that is also advice for a new driver, not really specific for a 4,000 mile drive. He was looking for advice more along the lines of what might fail mechanically, what fluids he should bring, comfort problems others might have found, etc... Each mile of that 4,000 still needs the same skill set as the rest, well, almost the same skill set. Alot of different driver demographics he will be passing through there. From the elderly FL people to the aggressive and pissed off DC people to the terrified RI people, the masshole Boston people, etc...

Another tip: Take the wallet out of back pocket if that's where normally keep it or you'll end-up with one sore butt cheek. LoL Two weeks ago did 3,000 KM's in 4 day no issue and best mileage I've ever got. Just check the oil regularly.

I drove from LA to Houston in about 3 days... car ran great the whole time. I changed oil twice before I left and also when I got to Houston. Probably overkill but it's good knowing your car is running well. Also, make sure you have plenty of tread on your tires. If you premix, bring some with you.

when i drove my car back from wisconsin to indiana when i bought it, it was about a 5 1/2 to 6 hour drive each way and i ended up taking my wallet out half way home. besides that, i was pretty comfortable and even hit 25 mpg :)

just as others said, check the oil fairly regularly. i'd suggest getting your regular oil change and maintenance performed before going on a trip that long just to be on the safe side. oh and just remember to enjoy your trip.
