Rx8 warranty ending soon
I have a 2005 rx8 and my warranty is up in april. I made an appt for next week because my engine has been having slight problems and. For example a noticable burning smell, on occasion a rough idle but no lights like check engine. Just changed my oil 200 miles ago There also is a massive amount of white crap on the dipstick, I know a common problem but not near as much as this. I was just asking for some advice on what to say and what not to say or what to ask for like a compression test or something? thanks

Thanks I wont tell them about the oil. Why not get a test from the dealer? the cost? and yeah the white stuff is normal but I'm not sure about the amount I have. You must be in a colder weather area as well. Does your tranny knock a bit when cold when switching from 1st to 2nd?
|
just get the dealer to give you a copy of the test
|
I know a few guys who work there and they seem honest. I will ask for the results though just so when I "sell" it. I just need to make sure it is good for a while since I'm broke and wont have money to get a new one after the warranty. Thanks for the responses.

yea it does im in NY but i thought it might have been my motor mounts affecting it (its not bad though) I wouldnt take it to the dealer for the first compression test... whos to say they wont straight up lie to you to avoid the swap, even if it is mazda dont trust them. Get a test with someone familiar with rotarys and ask for the print out then give it to mazda. At that point they will do there own comp test and just make sure u ask to 'see' the results

Condensation on the dipstick is entirely normal for rotaries, and should burn off after a session of wankle spanking. However, it could also be a coolant seal failure if it's excessive and just simply doesn't go away. Get the oil tested to be sure if you suspect the latter.

Mine is about to expire in April too of this year. The only problem i have is the coolant light is on since last year. I know that the problem is at the coolant sensor, and the warranty for that is over. On the engine, i only have 38k miles on the odometer and there is no problem as far as i know. I was thinking about getting a compression test on the engine before the warranty expires in April, but i'm still thinking about it, not sure yet...

I just figure I may as well. I take care of it and if something is wrong I'd rather get it done for free than a few thousand down the road
I know...its better to be safe than sorry. I don't want to pay $150 for a compression test and find out that your engine is still fine, i don't know... |
Well Monchie you could always ask phils8 if you could use his compression tester to help you decide if its worth it to have the dealer do it. It is still worth paying the dealer before your warranty is up anyway. It would be foolish not to do a compression test at all.

There's a service bulletin on that. You're out of warranty for that kind of thing, but I don't think the fix was expensive. Worth looking up if the white stuff bothers you.

According to Mazda and most manufactures the comp test will be required to be done by a dealer to be considered for warranty. And most shops don't have the correct comp tester to do a rotary. Just go to the dealer and ask for the results.

So thats actually a problem? Everywhere I read said it was just normal? I will talk to my dealer about it, they seem pretty understanding.

Ok I'm just getting a compression test done and asking about the white stuff. I will get a paper print out and upload it tuesday

That's what i thought. They would not honor any outside shops that do this kind of test. |
Exactly. They have to sent the comp numbers to Mazda North America before they can get approval for a new engine.
|
From what I understand though the test is free if there is a problem with the engine.

When I tried to start my 8 this morning it wouldn't start. Wouldn't catch then the battery died. AAA jumped me and was late to my appt for the compression test but just to add now my traction control light is stuck on! Never had a problem before today with my 8. The guy said he wanted to see if it was throwing codes which would cost 90 then compression if i wanted for another 90 not sure about the traction control though.

If the battery is disconnected or discharged sufficiently, the ECU loses all "learned parameters", including fuel trims, steering position, wheel diameters, etc... The TCS light remains on until after it gathers steering information by turning the wheel from lock to lock, your choice of directions. The DSC remains on until after it gathers rolling data and the car is shut off then re-started.
|
When my motor went the dealership tried to tell me I had to pay for the comp test regardless of the results. But when it failed they covered it . I only had to pay for plugs, wires and coils
