RX8 Sunvisor broke

I just bought a brand new 2006 mazda rx8 couple of weeks ago, and the other day my sunvisor broke. Going to the dealership to get it fixed, or replace. Has this happened to anyone else before?

CarAndDriver 10-09-2006 11:18 PM

Use the Search function. Seek and ye shall find.

Yeah there's about a 3 million page thread of people this has happened to. Both of mine have broken before.

tonelocdog 10-09-2006 11:26 PM

yes alot of them have broken. Cant believe what a big problem this is, this sucks, oh well, just have to get it fixed thats all. Weird

Easy_E1 10-09-2006 11:31 PM

Funny but I have had 2 RX-8's and I live in AZ and put over 34,000 miles between the 2 and have not had a visor fail. And it is HOT in the summer. I don't understand it.

Glad you found the many many threads on this defect. I replaced my driver's side recently. Sucks is an understatement!

Welcome!

I think they should or should of done a recall, on the visors. Since there are so many complaints on them breaking. IMO

New Yorker 10-09-2006 11:43 PM

Can't understand why so many have broken, and others—like mine—are perfectly ok.

Maybe, when they make them, there are some bad batches using substandard plastic—or maybe the process used to form them doesn't have much margin for error (i.e. if the plastic's just slightly too hot or too cold or something??) Just thinking out loud—I have no knowledge of plastics or visor production and, frankly, don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

Well i was pretty surprised myself after dropping alot of doe on a brand new 2006 RX8, and having a 'Sunvisor Break' Shortly after. The sunvisor casing broke apart, with only using the sunvisor less than a few times. Literally the sunvisor case cracked, came apart. And a wire is hanging down, which lights up the mirror underneath. WTF

voodooray 10-10-2006 01:22 AM

same happened here, wasn't that much of a big deal apart from doing 70mph at the time it broke and not being able to see for a minute before i ripped the thing off completely. :)

It was replaced and has been fine ever since, not a big deal really.

tonelocdog 10-10-2006 01:47 AM

Im not concerned with it. The dealership will fix it right away. Everything else works perfectly fine for now lol

Mine broke the week after I bought my RX-8 and when I took it in for recall they didnt fix the visor like I asked them to.

danhilde 10-10-2006 01:01 PM

Yup. Mine broke 3 times already in about a year (I am in AZ too, but heat may not be root cause based on reports from other folks in colder climates). Clearly a case of quality control; probably on the arm extension that the visor is attached to (diameters vary?). So I agree that a recall is appropriate on this (if only for the safety implication; i also had to rip mine off at higher speed to get it out of my vision). My current visor was replaced last month and I have barely touched it. I figured I'd wait until the cooler weather is fully here. But as I feel the current one and move it a little, I can already see that it will quickly break if I don't put it down/up with two hands, very carefully. Problem with this problem is that the electrical system is tied to it. When I ripped mine down (the first time it broke) my radio went out and I had dashboard icons illuminate. Mazda ... recall this one; it's annoying.

Well, I took my RX8 to the dealership, and they had some in stock, and they put a new one in like in 5 minutes. My dealerships mechanics are very good, so is the manager in the service department. Everything was covered under the waranty. I am pleased, but now, my windshield is cracked, so this friday, they are going to put a new one in, but i found out, that mazda's rx8's has different type of windshields, so i am not sure on which one i will be getting, but i think i will like it. Dont no if someone cracked it on purpose, or it was done, intentionally, Im contemplating whether or not onto getting the shock sensors that are available, with the stock car alarm, so i can have total security over my car. But not sure, yet if i will get it, probably just dont no when, because i got to tint up the RX8 because at night the truckers really blind me from behind.
But all in all, service department at Mazda are top notch. And they fix things very FAST, as well as free car washes are a plus.

Mine broke before I even set foot in the car! Went to pick up the car last Saturday and was told it was ready after they had just had to replace the - you guessed it- driver side visor, which they had in stock. The car had been in the showroom for a couple of months so I assumed some jerk sat in it and broke it until I realized what a common problem this is.

tonelocdog 10-10-2006 06:37 PM

Yea, well after purchasing my brand new rx8 there was a small scratch on the back of my rx8, i told the guy who sold me the car to make sure to have it fixed, before i was going to pick it up, and they didnt. I came back to tell them that, and one of the assistant managers said he will remove, it but he didnt, actually he made it worse, its not noticeable, but its noticeable, to me, because they want three hundred to rub it off, fu**ing jerk.

DOMINION 10-10-2006 07:04 PM

I thought this is a recall or is this under a service bulliten?

tonelocdog 10-10-2006 07:55 PM

No I cant rap at all. Im white LOL

It probably broke after a couple swivels. Some seem to fall apart immediately after being replaced.

I havent used mine much after being replaced. I'm afraid it's going to crumble again. I wear my sunglasses a lot.

valpac 10-10-2006 08:53 PM

FWIW, my visors are perfect. (knock wood) And I use them constantly when securing my sun shade. Dont know why people are having so much trouble with them. I know many 8 owners and they have not reported visor defects either.:dunno:

Either way, its not a big deal as has been said. A good dealer will not give you a hard time and replace then right away.

Shaida 10-10-2006 10:33 PM

Mine broke last month. Exactly 1 week after purchasing the car! The dealer didn't have any in stock, so they took off one from another car. Same problem....the casing cracked and the visor was dangling by the wires.

Cody Red 10-10-2006 11:01 PM

Mine was broken when I bought it. Top that... :( It's cool, i don't look in the mirror often, only before i leave the house. nor does the sun bother me (sun glasses) so that bishhh stays up.

CarAndDriver 10-10-2006 11:17 PM

Mazda should give us some free botox sessions after we develop wrinkles from squinting since we are too afraid to use our defective visors.

tonelocdog 10-11-2006 12:23 AM

I dont no why they have those little holes in the sunvisors? It makes the glare of the sun looking at you even more brighter, than not even using them. Weird. I guess they want to blind you when your driving, to make it more advance while driving an RX8 sh*t

The thinking is that it allows one to see stoplights when pulled lower and when tilted the holes do not allow the light to come through.
