RX8 shutdown procedure (AT)version

Just wondering what is the proper shutdown procedure for automatic transmission? SHould I let it run without moving the car for 3 minutes or what is the best way?

Your help is appreciated!

If you have been driving the car and it is warmed up there is no special shut down procedure.

They only time you have to let it run is if you have just moved it a few feet and haven't let it warm up.

If the engine is not completely warmed up it may make sense to rev the engine to 3k or so for a couple of seconds then shut it off. It's not (IMO) neccessary when the car is fully warm (like after driving somewhere) though. Some folks like to do it at each shutdown, but I'm not one of them.

With an AT, though, I think it is important to 'clear the pipes out' when you're driving it once in a while though (ie: drive it hard a bit, hear the redline beeper, etc.) since it's less likely you'll be doing that in full auto mode and as such you can more easily end up with carbon deposits on the plugs which may cause problems over time. As has been said a few times in other threads, it does the rotary engine good to be driven in the high rev-ranges from time to time, to keep things nice and clean in the engine.

I drive mine normal and have never had any problems with it.

revving it up prior to shutting it down...never done that and don't intend to.

Shut-down procedure for a warmed-up AT RX-8: Turn the key counter-clockwise.

Shut-down procedure for a cold-engined AT RX-8: Don't.

Turn the key counter-clockwise?? Is THAT what that grinding sound was? I've been doing it all wrong!

Thanks for the giggles Katchoo.

I've never had *special* shutdown procedures for my AT RX-8.

1. Start Car
2. Back out of garage and down driveway
3. Park in street
4. Turn car off

I've done this MANY times and have never had flooding or starting issues--regardless if the car is cold or warm.
