Rx8 and header?

Has anyone added header to there 8? I have aem cai , greddy pulleys, already and thinking headers would be next so they increase hp on the 8 at all or add anything?

lilring 04-24-2011 03:45 PM

before you go to the header. Get the a Midpipe. such as BHR or Racing beat

monchie 04-24-2011 04:39 PM

You might as well get a midpipe too if you are going to do all of that. It will add a significant 15 hp or so as well.

I've thought about adding a header, but the driveability issues it may pose make me want to go for an accessport first.:ylsuper:

You probably will not like the sound of it all. Use it on quieter mods lol

what if he doesn't want his car to smell like ass every time he drives it?
catless rotary cars are not fun and HIGHLY illegal.
at least with the BHR he has the option of a catted vesion.

15 hp?
probably not.
I've always had a cat on my car and I consistently dyno higher then RX-8's that are catless. I doubt I would pick up 15 whp if I ditched the cat.

such as????

I have the Racing Beat header, I await your response.

I love the sound of my RB header. It's not very noticeable at low RPM.

No need to get snippy my friend :P
Haha, anyways. I kind've assumed you'd have a CEL from it without a custom tune. Of course, it's comparing apples to oranges, but that's exactly how it was on the Stratus Coupe I got rid of last year.

Jedi54 04-25-2011 06:12 PM

not snippy at all man, I was just rather intrigued by the response.
thought maybe you'd experienced something out of the norm so I was curious to find out what was going on.

no CEL, well... at least not with the RB unit. :)
I think I drove it around without the AP for a few weeks while my cobb unit was getting repaired and it never triggered anything.

The header is a nice mod, it won't get you a ton of HP (maybe a couple here and there) but the sound (like most mods for the 8) is a nice 'lil upgrade

Ahhh gotcha sir!
Only on the stratus. The only real "Mod" my 8 has at this point is a B&B Mid Pipe I got from Domenico. I've been poking around at headers lately, but I think I'd like to get a cat back system first.

curly_drift08 03-09-2015 10:09 AM

Sorry if im bring a dead thread back to life but i was wondering what is the best bang for your buck when it comes to headers, I have the BHR midpipe w/o cat, BHR coil pack and an AEM Cold air intake. I was thing about the RB header but I wanted to get some opinions on other headers out there.

RIWWP 03-09-2015 10:13 AM

Until recently there wasn't many options, and the ones that existed weren't really all that much of an improvement.

However, BHR now has a header out (Black Halo Racing Long-Tube Header | Black Halo Racing) with significant gains. It's pricey and it replaces your midpipe but you can resell the midpipe to get some cost back.

And yes, that point is confusing for most. It's a long tube header, so it is much longer than the stock header, which means that it's downstream end is past where the front is for any pipe that is a direct replacement for the stock cat section. So no, the BHR header and the BHR midpipe are not compatible. You get a shorty midpipe with the header, so the header connects to that and then that connects to the catback.

curly_drift08 03-09-2015 10:20 AM

I saw that header system and that is alot of money. Ive only heard good things from it but I thins i would have to wait alittle for something like that

I guess I was asking what are some options for a short tube header. Ones simular to RB headers

RIWWP 03-09-2015 10:22 AM

Racing Beat is the only shorty that would be worth buying. There are some no-name ebay ones out there that will crack, welds fail, sound terrible, etc...

I'm curious though... If you buy the racing beat header first, then the BHR later, you will have spent $2,800 (BHR midpipe + RB header + BHR header) and more than double the labor time. It's cheaper to just save up and buy the one you want in the first place?

curly_drift08 03-09-2015 12:18 PM

Well what would be the HP gain from the long tube headers?

I see what you mean and yeah that does make sense about saving for the BHR , Im just trying to see what my best options to get the best set up.

And with the longtube headers I would have to get a 3" catback , which is what I was already planing on doing. If the money flows right this summer I was thing about getting the Pettit catback

RIWWP 03-09-2015 12:20 PM

The BHR header is new, and the only dyno posted so far is using a dyno that is reading insanely low, so it's hard to make a quantitative answer to that.

On a Dynojet, which is fairly 'average', there have been a couple people with them that have said that they are up to the 230whp range with it, from perhaps 210s before. But again, no before/after, so no number to pin down yet.

Don't fall for the vendor's "15whp" claim in the other thread BTW. Get dyno proof. Greddy claims that "up to 15whp", based on "what make and model gets the most power using our exhaust". It isn't true with the RX-8. "Up to" might only be 1. Or less.

curly_drift08 03-09-2015 12:35 PM

Oh ok , I just gotta wait then for some better numbers and just gotta save my money up. Im just sick waiting but I'll just wait and save for the BHR headers and then just go with the RB catback. I think that willbe a soild set up. I know that catbacks are maily for sound and do little for power. I have read your thread about the guide for the modding the rx-8. That what im trying to get the best and not cut coners like my cars in the past.

I have the RB header with AP mid pipe and exhaust. Turned out good with a nice sound to it. Bit aggressive but nice. Header was a bitch to get on, though. I did get a CEL with this set up but got rid of it with mazda edit.

curly_drift08 03-14-2015 11:00 PM

I did read the bhr harder install, seemed like there was bit of fab work to get it to fit right :/ didn't like like anything majortho

Sphere 03-16-2015 02:41 PM

I was hoping BHR would come out with a shorty header. I understand Charles generally does for the best option, but most of us won't run a long tube header even IF it is the best option. It's just a bit more pricier then I had hoped for, and it certainly doesn't allow for a legal option for inspections. With a shorty we at least have an option to slap a cat on for inspections.

What is this Mazda edit? I have had this code since I installed the RB headers and exhaust kit. Man I have tried everthing and my state inspection is around the corner. This will be of great help if I know what to do and where to go.

Here is Mazda Edit: epifanSoftware | mazdaEdit | Versions & prices

And here is the cable you need to connect your laptop to the obdII port: Tactrix Openport 2.0

This is probably the best option for a s2 car to clear CELs and tune. There is some info out there about versa tuner but I don't think as many people are using that compared to Mazda Edit now. Hope this helps!

I've got the rb rev 2 mid pipe and love it. Great for dd

Roytary 06-15-2015 03:17 AM

good header will give you considerable gains on a built ''half built'' motor, to make the money worth you should port your engine first. a soft/mid bridge port would benefit a lot with a good header.
On a almost stock motor with your mods, cat delete/mid pipe, ign upgrade to ecu flash/custom is a way better investment. if u have a healthy motor and u can afford/are willing to have your motor ported,do it, then look for header.

oneil301 06-18-2015 07:06 AM

Thanks OfficerFarva,

I will try this in a coulpe of months. I will get and extension on the state inspection.
