the RX8 is gone
 

Well after a brief time driving this car I have replaced it with something else
it was fun but the ride is over, there were alot of things I liked about this car, but the rotary engine may need a few more generations before it is reliable enough to be used in a production vehicle, that is just a modest opinion and is not meant to get anyone bent out of shape over.

in any case if anyone was interested i replaced it with a SLK32 AMG which I found for a great deal in a small mitsubishi dealership

That's a smooth looking ride man...I looked at some MB's myself before my rx8 fell in my lap (as well as G35C's).

Re: the comment about the rotary engine. The people on this forum will flame you to no end for it. I however have been around them longer than most here, and I understand what you are saying. But to counter your point, the rotary has been used in production vehicles in the US since the early 1970's...and all of the 79-91 non turbo rotaries have been pretty good overall in terms of reliability.

I got an email from a guy last week that got 280k miles out of his 86 nonturbo rx7, and I knew of a guy once that got 374k out of his one-owner, all original, well maintained 89-91 (I forget which year exactly) before the engine developed a coolant seal issue and he got a reman, last I heard several years ago he was well over 400k still plugging away. Also my own rx8 was one of the higher mileage known examples in the US with almost 118k on the original engine before I completed the MT swap recently, and this was an early build 04 AT, the most problematic model made thus far.

The renesis seems to be a step backwards in terms of public image and reliability, but it is not the engine design itself, it is mazda's implementation of it that has been a problem with this model.

The cars that tend to have the most problems are the ones that are traded around and bought second/third/fourth/whatever-hand.

My 8 is my second rotary-engined car and I've never had one single bit of trouble with either engine. Bought both BN, so I suspect RR is correct in that problem cars tend to get handed-off from owner to owner. One car can generate 3 or 4 unhappy owners.

I hear what what you guys have to say, I think for one if they had a seperate oil resevoir that allowed the OMP to inject two -stroke oil into the engine instead of the oil used to lubricate it, which I was thinking about doing with the SOHN adapter, but then you start getting into voiding your warrenty, and that is not a good thing on these cars with some guys needing engine replacements before 50k miles

I am not saying I did not like the car and love the idea of the rotary engine, but I have allready noticed that the OMP in my brand new RX8 must have stopped injecting oil
since I had it i use to have to put oil in every other gas up, but it has been the last 3-4 and nothing, everytime I check the dipstick it showed good, but I knew it should have been low by then.
I also guess that coming from a supercharger G35 It was a little too hard to get use to the lack of low end torque, which again I was thinking about supercharging the 8
and again we are talking about voiding a much needed warrenty for this car

I guess the die hard fans of the Rotary will prob. flame me, and some others might understand.

While that MB is a nice looking car I do not think your making a upgrade in terms of reliability or cost of repair.

If the dealership was changing your oil, they were probably overfilling it. I know mine does every time they do it, even though I warn them to watch it beforehand. Remember that the guy changing the oil is always the new, green kid in the garage.
By the time the next oil change rolls around, the dipstick says you haven't injected any oil even though you have indeed lost a couple of quarts. And it doesn't help that the Rennie dipstick sucks big-time to begin with.

Also, premix is pretty cheap insurance. Even at 25% of the "usual" premix ratio, there's plenty of real 2-stroke oil getting into the engine even if the OMP does skimp.

You have to have a rotary-friendly mentality to get along with this car. Expecting "drive it and forget it" operation is only going to guarantee disappointment.

I like the new SLK, but the old ones are a bit too girly for me. Something about it makes it feminine, I just can't put my finger on it.

Like someone else said, at least it's an AMG, so you get some performance from it....

There where no ratings for the 8 on repairpal so I tried edmunds. Both reports are for '04

Costs of service I agree with though, Mercedes will kill you, but so will any other luxury brand.

I have noticed that most of the people that get "flamed" for talking about getting rid of their 8 and what nots, have always been the people that are like slamming the 8 and talking about things that, so far from most posts i've seen, have no idea what they are talking about in any sense, or people who for a simple reason will flip out and say they are selling it. :eyetwitch

Good luck with your car. But for a lot of us here, no back seat means no go. I'm approaching my 2 year anniversary with my car. My only issue was the infamous sun visor breakdown! :)
