RX8 doing 167 mph in Germany - bone stock- for all the doubters. :)
167 mph in Germany - bone stock (I posted this before in a thread):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MI53...eature=related ........ |
OK - can you clarify pls
1 Downhill or not ? looks like it is .... 2 stock tyre size ? 3 tailwind ? |
I can only imagine the EGT's on that. I remember trying to push a 2.5RS subaru past 125 stock.. EGT's were scary high when I decided to not melt something and backed off.
|
Definitely downhill ;)
|
You can tell when he starts going back uphill. lol
|
ahh I wish I live in Germany so I can do this everyday. and nurburgring for the weekend.
|
LOL!
Definitely down hill. Still cool though. Wish we had highways where you could legally do that here in the US. |
when rx-8 goes fast, all of the sudden people doubt it in every possible way.

Not only did they hit 167, but the car looked very stable based on the video - no shaking, vibrations, etc. That steering wheel tracked quite nicely, and only a few motors could make such pleasing sounds at those RPMs. How many cars out there could make that speed, even on butter smooth roads, look so creamy and velvety? Few, if any, at the price of the 8. |

I was just thinking that. I think I have to delete my account on here, cause I just can't bomb on my car and it seems to be a requirement around here.
Top speed is a nice little bragging rights thing, but not particularly indicative of a car's performance. It's really only important when it's a limiting factor, which it's not in most cars (ignoring built in limiters). I did a run myself and was limited to a little below 160... I think I hit 154 when it stopped gaining (went back and forth a mph every few seconds). |
All I could see was when he started accelerating and when he started decelerating. I didn't see any hills of appreciable size.
It's funny, I trash-talked my Passat and got shunned for it, but people here trash-talk their 8's and it's considered being realistic. So I'll ask you what they asked me: why do you have the car if you don't like it? |

So I'll ask you what they asked me: why do you have the car if you don't like it? RX-8 Owners are the Mel Gibson's of the auto world: Yelling profanely and threateningly at their hot, sexy & sophisticated wives for trivial and even meaningless bullshit. |
The people who are considered "bashers" are often just being realistic. Just because we question the ability of a car to do something that is pretty significantly (at those speeds, another 12 mph or so is a pretty HUGE difference) out of the range of what previously has been seen does not mean we are bashing on the car.
Is it still bashing if we called someone out for saying they hit 190 mph? This is and probably will be for a very long time one of the best cars I have driven and owned. That said, I'm not so desperate to prove that it's a great car that I'm going to ignore reality or certain variables to prove something. As pointed out, it's hard to tell if it's downhill (and it most likely is). I could claim I'm on a road and just film the speedometer and claim I hit 184 when I'm really just on jack stands or the dyno. Being realistic is not bashing. The RX-8 is an amazing car, not perfect. Plus, as noted before, the top speed is pretty useless unless it's becoming a limiting factor. |
well, in the U.S.A you go STRAIGHT TO JAIL and your 8 IMPOUNDED if you're caught going 167MPH on any public road... so, what difference does it make anyways?

On a four lane divided road in rural Nevada on a straight slightly down hill road, I was able to get mine to 153 but had to slow down because it was airborne (a truck three lanes over almost sent off into the desert). Now mine is far from stock but with a little aero work it is possible |
No car is perfect, even a Ferrari or Lambo. But, in my opinion, when every thing is considered (comfort, practicality, smiles per mile ratio, style, etc.) the 8 is one of the great cars out there. And the best handling car this side of Porshe money... there... I said it. I even picked it instead of the 370Z, it just had "something" the Z didn't. As for the apex seal problems, I wonder how closely monitored the oil level was and how those cars were driven (those who had problems). I red line my car regularly, but then I shift, I don't torture the engine cause it sounds nice at 9000 rpm.
|
If you're having trouble getting past 160 mph in your 8, try pulling in your elbow and rolling up the window. Hmm, maybe I should post that in the tech forum.
I think that was an old Hemi joke... |
I got an RX8 up to 163 in gran turismo. Does that count?

^ lol good to see it hit that speed even if it was downhill
|
My 991hp 20B RX8 in Forza 3 can hit over 240mph
It was only $400,000 imaginary dollars!!!!!!! |
Call me crazy, but if I can hit 145mph in my Passat (which I actually did, once) and it wasn't done accelerating yet, I gotta think a sleeker car with more horsepower is going to be able to do a few mph faster than that.

That's the only reason this video doesn't necessarily seem realistic without a slight down hill slope. I can see some variances in achievable speeds since the output on these cars can vary so much, but I just honestly don't think any one (stock) car is actually capable of going a full 10 mph faster than what has previously been seen. If so, we would have seen a couple more instances or claims of it happening. One video is not nearly proof of what the car is capable of doing. |
