RX8 bashing

So I've been pretty durn excited about getting my rx8 so I've been telling my friends and such. So this guy goes off on rx8 saying that its a crappy car for the money it costs and its not even worth buying because they are going to totally change the rx in 2-4 years and the old ones will be worth nothing for resale value....blah blah blah...his wrx would rip it apart...blah blah...srry had to vent

Senseny 07-16-2004 02:17 AM

First off, I hate anyone who pisses on a car owners parade. There are many cars that I don't like, but I congratulate the owner and tell them its nice. Its not my business to point out flaws. Second of all, you will forget this guy after you are complimented on your car all the time while driving it. Buy it for yourself and forget him.

Denzalo 07-16-2004 02:20 AM

Well he obviously doesn't know his cars if he says rx-8 is bad for the money. And how would he know that they are going to change them? Sounds like BS talk to me.

Outlaws eXtreme 07-16-2004 02:34 AM

Who cares what other people say... how old are you guys? As a grown adult, I could care less what other people think about my car. If they tried pulling that crap with me, I'll ask them what is it in their life that they lack which makes them bash another person's car? Besides, I have the money to buy the WRX STi AND the RX-8.. so it wouldn't be much of an argument.

GooOnYou 07-16-2004 03:23 AM

I would take it as flattery. He's obviously jealous that he doesn't own such a fine piece of automotive engineering. Besides, if he didn't have FI driving his ride, he wouldn't have anything to talk about.

Razpewton 07-16-2004 05:55 AM

First of all, Iwould assure him that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES will you ever FORCE him to ride in your car. Then I would say, "Besides, I didn't mention anything about that dumbass shirt you're wearing." :D :D

DOMINION 07-16-2004 06:39 AM

Sounds like he has a WRX? is is a fan of the WRX... Well if you ask us RX-8 owner's we will tell ya it was worth the money, fun and compliments you will get when your in and out of your car. I love my car.

Deslock 07-16-2004 06:41 AM

Every car has compromises... the RX8 lacks low-end oomph and consumes a lot of fuel. But it's nimble, balanced, has tight steering, an excellent shifter, smooth engine, instant throttle response, amazing brakes, and superb road-feel. My WRX had its own advantages, but was inferior to the RX8 in *all* of those areas.

Most people who bash the RX8 have never driven a true sports car... let them have their fun doing reviews based on magazine-times while you have your fun behind the wheel.

DOMINION 07-16-2004 06:43 AM

Yea.

Phlash 07-16-2004 06:44 AM

People fear and put down what they don't understand........thing is, yes it will probably be different in 2 to 4 years.......that's the traditional cycle that most Japan imports follow. That includes Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc.....and yes even Subaru. The WRX isn't the car it was 2 to 4 years ago......yes it the quicker car, but if you have never driven one, go try it....it's a totally different auto and doesn't "grow" attached to you like the 8 does. It's not as quiet, nor is it as solid as the 8. Let him rant...his ignorance, his loss.....you'll know better......those of us that already own it know better.....may the force be with you.

Hey I hate politics. Maybe that why I dont understand them.

Reaper Man 07-16-2004 10:11 AM

they changed the wrx completely(at least cosmetically) after 2 years, it did nothing to the resale of the car. I agree, the wrx is not as "solid" as the 8- though I do have to say, I miss the turbo sound as well as the rumble of the boxer engine, but there are things that are great about the 8- cmon, we drive the most powerful sewing machine in the world:)

Deslock pretty much pegged the driving differences between the wrx and 8

I think that's all I have to say

don't pay attn to the haters:)

rotaryxlr8 07-16-2004 10:29 AM

I was looking around for a car and was considering a Nissan 350Z, a Mini CooperS, and the RX-8. I remember mentioning to my brother-in-law what he would choose among the three and he favored buying the Z or the MINI over the 8. He did mention something about problems with rotary engines at the time, but could not elaborate or substantiate.

Needless to say I bought the 8, after test driving the others, and I'm happy I was able to come to my own conclusion: there's no comparison. The kicker to this is that now that I have my 8, all he does is look at it in awe.

is is put rx--8 yes betta than wrx blah yup then i'll butt drive he nows better.

Nemesis8 07-16-2004 10:57 AM

I looked at VW, Subaru, Nissan, Honda, Audi, and I always came back to the 8. My wife is going to upgrade her '99 Passat on the W8, so we will be the 8 faimily :D She needs the extra room to work from the car - mortgage loan officer! I need the capsule of my 8 to feel the road

Every professional car magazine/publication has given the RX-8 glowing reviews. These are professionals who are paid to drive cars and evaluate them. They get to drive far more cars every year than any of us will drive in a lifetime. Yet after driving all these other great cars, they still think the little sub-$30,000 RX-8 is one of the best and most fun.

What does that tell you?

MTLbroker 07-16-2004 08:38 PM

He's just looking for a debate. It's never happened to me. Everyone I know, even some I don't know congratulate me on the car. I've had more expensive cars and I can get whatever I want. My friends know this, but they still say I made and excellent choice in the 8. The immaturity of this condescending person is mindboggling. I wonder if he's always such a pleasant personality. Me, I choose to hang out with friends who are much more fun.
It's been my experience that these types of people like to get the last word. When they make such a comment, take the high road. Say something in a sincere tone like ,"Yeah, you're probably right. By the way thats a really great ride you have. Enjoy it." Then smile and just walk away. It shuts them up. They spend the rest of the time thinking if you were being being sincere or just messing with him. No matter, he'll feel like shit once he realizes what an ass he's been.

Exactly. He should have punched him in the face, then walked away.

RX22 07-16-2004 09:57 PM

Now is this guy a "friend" of yours? If so, you may want to find some new friends. Sounds like an insecure blowhard to me. Like others have said, a true friend would be happy for you, just because you're happy. My best friend bought a new Ford F150 pickup, which is of no interest, whatsoever, to me. But when he brought it over to my house, I faked the enthusiasm, made him take me for a ride, demanded that he let me drive it, and told him I was really happy for him.

Personally I think the RX8 is a more mature car than the WRX, and I think this moron is proving my point.

Just for the record, I am getting ready to trade my loaded 2004 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro in on an RX8. The Audi is a beautiful, great car, but the RX8 is just a lot more fun.

Tell this guy to prove how fast his WRX is by getting in it and driving away.

Omicron 07-16-2004 10:25 PM

Why is it that the WRX, Evo, 350Z, and to a lesser extent, the G35 fanatics feel compelled to bash the RX-8? Simple: Envy. The RX-8 is a better car in every way except 1/4 mile acceleration, and looks like an exoticar. 'Nuf said.

Redlinin 8 07-16-2004 10:47 PM

Tell him you wouldn't take his car to a shoot out....nor would you touch it with a glove on....tell him his wing and hood scoop are the ugliest things you've seen in your lifetime and you rather have looks and performance over just performance. The 8 looks better....and is more of a everyday car. The handling is great, looks are beautiful, and power is just what you need.Tell him you could have gotten the wrx,but you chose the rx-8 for a reason......5+magazines dont lie. The RX-8 is a winner dispite its few flaws. Every car has some, espeically his wrx.

Maximus 07-16-2004 11:27 PM

My usual response: Go test drive the 8, the choice is yours!

futureownr4sure 07-17-2004 12:18 AM

The thing is, I'll soon have enough money to buy a great car. My dad might also get one soon too (a little bit earlier though). The thing is, I love the WRX, RSX, 350z, Celica GTS, Mustang, EVO 8, TSX, etc. Those cars are amazing. The wrx has a nice AWD system, it looks very good and it's classy for a normal sedan. It's very good looking. The RSX is looking fine and it has some tremendous potential under the hood, I often go on the clubrsx.com board, good people and very nice cars. Lots of aftermarket parts. The 350z is a very good looking car, with lots of things to offer. But the engine configuration sucks big time for a sports car, it's too heavy and it doesn't rev high enough. The Celica GTS is on par with the rsx type-s (stock to stock) but it looks even better, great sporty feel, light and agile. The mustang is also a decent car, but there's nothing too impressive, it's popular and it's a good car nonetheless. The EVO 8 is a beautiful car with awesome handling and style, it has power to run the balls out of the road too. The TSX is also a good 4-door car... But hey you know what, there's one car that's miles ahead.. It's the rx-8. This car is 10 years ahead comparing to the others. It's beautifully engeneered and it looks like nothing else. It's the CAR.

Jeffjett 07-17-2004 11:39 AM

I would simply suggest to him that if he feels this way, he should probably not buy an RX8.

RX8Drvr 07-17-2004 11:51 AM

Again, late on replying to the post, but I have to agree with everyone. Driving my 8 is more fun than any car I have ever owned. I think that is what it comes down to. If we all drove WRX's it would be a boring world, and the tree huggers wouldn't have Hybrids to pay too much for. (Sorry had to take that jab) Like pretty much everyone one else has said, get your RX8 and love it like it's your only child.

WOAH.. wait a second.. THIS guys name is English???

j/k man.. i just couldn't help it. To stay on topic, I love my 8. I have a lot of friends who have STi's and EVO's, and, while they are faster, they don't look ANYTHING like the 8. They seem much less comfortable, and have much less impressive interiors. I didn't buy my car simply to go fast, heck, I spend a lot of time in traffic, strolling at 35mph. But hey, at least I'm comfortable and look damn good! (oh yeah, the car too)

Mat 07-17-2004 03:52 PM

Most of the time popular magazines compare the RX-8 with something else, I see the same trend. While in the "objective" (1/4 mile, skidpad, etc) part the RX-8 stays slightly (slightly) behind (except in slalom of course), in the "subjective" score it totally outpaces anything, usually giving it first place.

I think this translates well in reality - when I was shoping around, I wasn't totally impressed by the RX-8 numbers (esp. since I heard about the 12-14mpg horror stories), but when I test drove it I knew that was the car I was looking for.

stickman 07-17-2004 03:58 PM

Fortunately, my rx8 is too sophisticated to engage in such discussions. If not, it would suggest that he try reving his wrx to 9000rpm and try to keep count of the parts flying through the hood.

Where do you live in mtl? And what's the color of your car? There's not a lot of 8 in mtl. Maybe I saw yours!

GiN 07-17-2004 04:35 PM

I will never argue that the 8 should be endowed with more torque and horsepower if it is to be more competitive on acceleration comparisons, but that's just too difficult to accomplish with a naturally aspirated 13B. As long as the car looks good and feels good, I for one am content. It shouldn't be difficult at all to guess that most cars weighing around 3000lbs with more than 240hp and/or 160lb-ft of torque will be "faster" than the RX-8.

People who buy family/commuter sedans, suvs, trucks, and luxury cars probably never get such rude comments like "my so and so will dust your so and so". What's the big deal?

MTLbroker 07-17-2004 05:05 PM

I have a red GT leather and roof. I'm most likely to be found downtown.

I've seen three sunlight silvers (one at star cité, one in downtown and one on my street), two titaniums (one on my street and another one in a parking lot) and one winning blue so far (at the mazda dealship on papineau street).

You said it right first time around man. Blah, blah, blah. That's all it is, is blah blah blah.

Same as saying...my dad can beat up your dad. Blah, blah, blah. Again, its just blah, blah, and blah..............................

Enjoy YOUR 8, we do.

Could you give me some links to the reviews? Right now Im still looking for some reviews to show to the rest of the family about the car.

Just about every sport compact or sportscar car board out there has people that bash the RX-8 and every other car for that matter, but the RX-8 takes more heat because of the hp fiasco and it's average acceleration numbers. Also because it's the new kid on the block so the other kids are ganging up on it :p Most of the people that bash it have never driven it and don't understand the merits of a nimble well balanced RWD car, they just see some acceleration numbers and heard about the HP thing and go by that. There's also some people out there that are disappointed in it because of what the FD was capable of so the RX-8 is a letdown.

On the other hand there are plenty of RX-8 owners that bash others cars and for a time there this site was full of haters of things not RX-8 though a lot of them seem to have gone away. So I just don't see how you can wonder why other car owners bash the RX-8 when many people on this board bash the cars you've listed.

As for the RX-8 being a better car in every way save for acceleration that's simply not true. The EVO, WRX, and STi have AWD so are better for people in bad cliamtes, they have more rear seat room, are true sedans, more trunk room, the EVO and STi are faster in the Slalom, faster in every form of acceleration test, and are about equal in braking and skidpad. In addition they are far more mod friendly, have huge aftermarket support, and it's very cheap to get big gains out of. They are also great if you want to partcipate in rally events which many of the owners do. The G35 and Z are just for people looking for more torque and more speed, and also for those people that value looks over everything else and just feel the Z or G looks best.

Basicly the RX-8 is NOT better in every way save for the 1/4 mile, it might be better for you but clearly not for others. Which brings me to it being a great time to be a car enthusiast because we have such great cars to compare, bash, argue about, and sing the praises of. 10 years ago we wouldn't have had the luxury to even have a discussion like this because there just weren't that many great cars at a reasonable price to choose from.

DOMINION 07-18-2004 10:48 AM

What I dont get is this one guy bought a blue 350-Z loaded in Sport Compact Car and payed $40K+ to get 40 more HP?. That to me is just a joke... I dont know one rally car owner who inters there car in a rally event. All the STI guys I know are show an shine. The RX-8 IMO is not a fast car but a very comfortable sports car. We picked looks over beauty.

Dlrosie 07-18-2004 11:00 AM

How about forgetting what other people say and think and just buy what you want?

bluesunlion 07-19-2004 11:27 AM

Horses for courses, kids. The WRX is a fine auto for what it's designed for, as is the 8.
