Rx8 auto to manual?
 

Well the first time i brought this car home it was a 2 day loner from the dealership, velocity red, stick shift.

A month or so later i purchased a black, 2 tone red interior'd, auto.

However each day i have regrets (except when i'm flyin down the road with a burger in one hand and shifting with the paddles :p) but i really wonder how it would have been with the manual.

I've been wondering enough. I want to see some figures here.

If i wanted to "exchange" this car which now as a ms spoiler, clear corners, painted calibers for a stick black gt packaged car, how much extra $$ would i be looking at? is there a way to .. say switch out the engines? i'm not a very car techy person but i really want to consider the options i have.

Switching engines and trannies, not to mention all the other parts, would be absurdly expensive. Trading in your car would be easy but you'd get raped by the dealer.

Better to sell your car privately and buy the one you want at the best price you can. You'd have to pay sales tax and registration all over again. I might suggest finding a used, low-mileage 8 with a stick.

Even better is to find someone to swap with you. There was one guy who injured his hand, looking to sell his 8 in the classifieds. Post an ad asking to swap someone.

You should be able to eat a burger and drive stick.

When you go to shift, your burger hand has to grab the steering wheel :)

I have no trouble eating a burger and driving my 6 speed. Burger in left hand held by two fingers and thumb, steering wheel held by palm of hand and two remaining fingers. Right hand quickly shifts within a couple of seconds. Don't keep driving that way, the burger hand just holds the wheel steady for a second or two.

Wouldn't want to risk damaging the shiny new car! :)

Oh gawd; why do you guys do these things? I consider driving and eating to be two wholly separate activities. (Unlike my wife, who thinks they were made to go together.)

Back on thread, unless you have some physical disability, I guarantee you that the stick is dramatically more fun to drive than the slushbox, paddles or no. No comparison.

During the purchase, there was no physical disability, however 2 human tag alongs that made my decision for me, called mom and dad :p.

Leaving for college in august, i may not be driving this car, so it will stay home, thus they want to drive it, however my father seems to be able to drive well. However they both know after i purchased it 6 months ago i still talk about manual so its time to see if its possible :D

And its not the fact that i want to eat in the car, its just the fact that i'm a man on the go! no time to eat then drive, combine the 2 and get it over with.

Any other viable options? If it went to the dealer do you think its possible to get near value? it has almost 3000 miles, and about 1200 worth of addons.

Wow! You guys eat in your brand new cars? I won't even drink a bottle of water in it!! Hehe, but then again that's probably just me being a neat freak ;)

I went to pick up lunch one time for one of my coworkers and myself. I veto'd his onion ring order!

I usually eat in my cars, but not the RX-8. The closest to eating was when the wife wanted to eat popcorn in a drive in movie. I found popcorn under the passenger chair the next day!

I'm telling you, man, the dealer will hose you raw. Sell it privately or trade it. And take off the extras, first: Put them on your next car.

You can do it, but I think you'll end up eating $2,000 - $4,000 on the deal.

Honestly, I have to agree with most people here that going to the dealership (just like the food) is not a viable option.

They will stick it to you worse then you can imagine because they KNOW that you'd be making an emotional decision and that YOU need them MORE then they need you... (they have what you really want)

I would really look into selling yours and buying a MT.

What is $2 - $4,000 if it will truly make you happy.

I told you to get a black six speed...you only listened to half of what I said...hahah If you trade it in, you'd probably lose $4K....is it worth it to you?

i wish i didn't have to however i havn't dropped anything so thus far i'm doing a damn good job of keeping it clean.

4k.. i think its worth it, whats 4k for utter enjoyment? i make a flowing income, hence i spend, it will come back eventually.

.....I have the same feelings but hey, if I ever get the urge to go man. I just switch it, even though it's only 4-speed vs. the 6-speed.

Btw. There's no eating in my car so I wouldn't know how the hamburger thing feels.

Ive already been in your shoesbut for different reasons. If you wantthe same exact GT package but inmanual Im afraid its goingto cost you more than $4000. Probably a little over $6000. Unless ofcrouseyou swap for a car w/a lower package model. Definitely notworth it to me. Thenagain Im not as unhappy w/the automatic as you seemto be. Ive driven both and the extra performance from the manual aint worth 4 grand more in my eyes. Test driveone if you havent already and seefor yourself. Its actually quieter thanthe automatic also notthat that means anything.

Ifyou can somehow pullsome strings and get the exactsame GT package in stick for under 4 grandthen go for it. Otherwise Id saykeep the automatic and saveyour money for F/I.
