RX-8 in the Snowy Mountains

I know this is inexplicable, but I took my '05 Winning Blue 6MT on a ski trip to Lake Tahoe last week. I have the OEM tires. Weather ranged from sunny one day, to cloudy the next, with some light snowfall. Daytime temperatures were in the 20's with overnight lows in the low teens. Altitude between 4,000 and 8,500 feet. Roads were plowed and sanded but with some icy spots.

Check this out:
1. My engine did not flood; in fact it started easily every time.
2. I did not spin out or otherwise lose control of the car.
3. I drove a total of 1400 miles, yet was very comfortable. I am 6-foot-2, 220 pounds.
4. I had plenty of room for my skis, boots, luggage, and other gear.
5. My heater was more than adequate.
6. Several people including two attractive young ladies complimented me on the car.
7. I averaged 23 MPG over the entire trip, and added one quart of oil (5W-20).
BTW yes, I did notice some loss of power above 6,000 feet elevation, but also seemed to burn less fuel (89 octane)

Should I be disappointed that I had no problems? Am I still eligible to post on this board?

people complain too much. sounds like you had fun, freddie. i can't wait to take mine to the mountains. did you use the 20 oil because of the cold? i thought we were supposed to use 5w-30.

Nice—though with the summer tires, you're lucky there wasn't snow or more ice.

If the stock tires were the stock Dunlops thats better than the SH*T OEM Bridgestones.

If they were the Bridgestones, lucky you didnt slide into a tree.

5w-20 (US/Canada) or 5w-30 (rest of the world)....it doesn't really make a difference.

Freddie,
I liked your post. It seems that everyone that posts, has something negative to say...including myself. It's always nice to hear another positive post.

I'm always afraid of the weather getting bad, quickly, so I always end up taking my wife's 4Runner up to Tahoe. On a side not, skied up at Homewood today and the 7 feet of snow from last week was great! Just had to fight the lines @ the lift.

Here in Estonia the winters are quite cold. The coldest weather I've started my car was -21 Celcius. I had to crank the car for 10 seconds before it did start and the engine revved itself right up to 4500 rpm-s. Also another problem when starting the car out real cold are the spark plugs. They tend to collect moisture and in such extreme temperatures the moisture on the plug freezes and you'll have to rev the engine atleast 4000rpm to clean the sparks. I first was a bit scared because the engine is quite shaky when one spark plug is not working correctly.

But otherwise the car works great, never flooded my car and the traction control is so superb that you'll barely get stuck in the snow. Just floor the pedal and the car will do the rest for you.

Another note is fuel consumption. In city it is 20l/100km(11,7MPG) and in the highway 15l/100km (15,7MPG). In summer it was 13l/100km (18MPG) city and 11l/100km (21.4MPG) highway.

Used oil 5w-30

I have yakima ski racks for mine, it is great the looks I got over at Okemo. Oh and if you are careful you can slide every corner esp when it is snowing. But ya they do amazingly well in the inclimate weather. The deep cold starts are a bit rough sometimes, but she starts every time without fail. ^_^

Not trying to steal the thread but can you post pics of the racks on your 8. I thought about getting a set as Yakima is the only one that makes one for the 8. Just curious how it looks.

here is a decent image with the skis on top. Don't have that many of her with the rack on.

89 octane? aren't u supposed to use 91octane?

CarAndDriver 03-07-2007 11:07 AM

At least otakurx is smart enough not to drive on the junk OEM Bridgestones in the snow.

I was in Tahoe in March too - only thing I missed was having my 8 with me (it was at home in England) ..... Some fabulous roads around there :-)
