You know I originally wondered about this too, but then I was told that on a rotary engine the most amount of torque you can get from N/A is about 2 lbs-ft per cubic inch. And since the total volume of a 2 rotor engine is about 80 cubic inches then that 153 lb-ft is almost right on. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the actual size is closer to 39 cubic inches per rotor.

Seriously only being offered with an Automatic tranny? In the close ups of the interior, it totally looks like a manual? If its auto only I think Ill spend my cash to convert a 3rd gen to 20b.

Nope, the RX-8 will sport a 6 speed gearbox. It's going to kick a$s.

6 Speed? total kick ass.

Does anyone know the options that are going to come stock...As in another Bose sound system, or 2 tone leather (like in the photo's) or any special performance packages. Seems that the car should be available in November of this year, about the same time all the 03' models will be open for purchase.

Also, anyone know of any reviews done or scheduled to be done by some car magazines/clubs?

I don't know anything about the packages it's going to have, but RotaryNews.com has posted two different interviews with both Mark Fields and Tom Matano from Mazda about the RX-8 and other topics (i.e. 4th gen RX-7, racing). They are really posting a lot of good coverage about the 8.

Did anyone else hear Mark Fields say his personal company car was an RX-7??

Yeah he drives an imported RX-7 Bathurst Type R. Lucky bastard.

Where does the Renesis fit in to this? Do you think this sports car engine will only be for one or two cars, or do you think it could be used for all the cars?

Well, one thing we have to keep in mind is $30,000. I think that is a barrier that we don't want to cross.

I had a lancer rental car last week, what a dog! The Mazda dealer told me 36k for fully loaded :( I hope he's wrong. I would still buy it though. Why is the torque so low? Shouldn't it be around 190-210lbs?

veloceracing 01-30-2002 10:34 PM

remember Johnny boy the torque curve on a rotary is much different then that of a piston engine. Mazda has said that they are unsure of that torque number because transmission gearing and rear end havent been decided. Does anyone know whos gonna make this transmission?

Johnny 01-31-2002 12:21 PM

Yeah veloce good point, i just hope mazda dosen't screw this up.

Jeff20B 02-02-2002 08:31 AM

They didn't screw up the REPU. My REPU's engine has less power than stock (it needs a rebuild), yet it still towed a friend's REPU (when he needed a clutch job) just fine. It's no tow truck, but it holds its own. Mazda built a gem that not many people knew about. The gearing is low at 4.6, and Mazda raised it through the years for better highway fuel economy finaly ending at 3.9.

This was from '74 to '77 with engines increasingly choked by ever tightening emissions standards. 110 to 135 peak HP was the limit (depending on the year) and my engine doesn't even produce that much. Torque is indeed different on a rotary. What we don't have in tip-in, we more than make up for with everything else. That's part of the reason why I'd like to see another REPU. Who wants a torquey yet gutless 6k RPM rev limited truck engine when a 3 rotor renesis would simply kill the competition? :) (the original REPU blew the doors off of the rest of the imports, and a good number of domestics of the time).

The way this relates to the RX-8 is due to the undecided gearing. I like the gearing in my REPU at 4.6, but I'd probably want to make it taller if I was going to be increasing my engine's output to pretty much anything over stock (such as with a supercharger, or turbo, or 20B :D), otherwise I'd be breaking them loose all over the place.

Mazda needs to customize a gear set/final drive that works really well with the power of the engine, the vehicle's weight, the projected payload (4 adults), the tire size, etc.

Some people are already complaining about the RX-8's low torque rating. Well, to them I say that my engine, which is at least 50% weaker than the renesis in every way, can sure trick you into thinking it's a much more powerful boinger engine, if boingers were all you knew. Us rotor heads know better
