Rx-8 or G35

I'm new to this forum and I have been doing research on both Infiniti G35 and RX-8.
I've test drove both cars. And to me the RX-8 just seemed more fun to drive and I would probably buy it over the G35 for that reason. However, after reading so many blogs, reports, and so many other threads, it seems that the RX-8 engine is not that reliable. I would love to hear from someone who has experienced both cars. Or if you have any advice I would like to hear from you.

Wow, this kinda like apples and oranges. Sure the 8 is fun to drive, but I would think your choices would be 350Z or G35 coupe. I testdrove both Z & G35 also. The reason I picked the 8 was it reminded me more of my old 240Z(power-weight more equal = fun!) and not like my other Z's(newer). My 2 cents

tjbourgoyne 10-04-2006 01:51 AM

Get the G35. Too many 8s on the road broken down.

CarAndDriver 10-04-2006 02:40 AM

Get a G35. We don't need any more RX-8s or whiny 8 owners on the road.

Stavesacre21 10-04-2006 02:58 AM

If the thought of an engine that requires somewhat special treatment bothers you in anyway whatsoever...G35 hands down.

8's not for everyone. accept the good...accept the bad .

G35

daisuke 10-04-2006 04:09 AM

if you want 100% hassle free get the G35, if you want to be different and enjoy that thing and can stand checking your oil more than once ever then go for the 8.

Of all the current sports cars available, my pick has always come down to these two cars. The G35 is marginally prettier and more powerful, but I choose the 8 because it looks different and has a wankel engine that is unique. the 8 WILL be my next car

G35! itz faster, and they are really comfortable!

mysql101 10-04-2006 05:05 AM

People's opinions of various cars are heavily effected by the major forums about the cars. It's a major resource of information, and when researching online, many will find this site.

Threads like this only help add to the poor opinion of the RX-8.

Some of you are joking, but it isn't apparent to everyone who reads the thread.

V Vette 10-04-2006 06:06 AM

I have had both. The G35 is more upscale/luxury while the Rx8 is sportier. The G35 is faster but the 8 is over-all fun! Enjoy either way... :ylsuper:

G35 is a grampa car. If you are a grampa get the G35.

This question depends on what your looking for.

If straight line grunt is your thing, then the G35 should be your pick, although it's not faster by much, but you do feel alot faster due to the torque on the G. If your looking for something that feels light, tossable, nimble that you can throw into a corner with total confidence, then the 8 is what your looking for.

The rear seats in the 8 are more roomy and usable and the 8 has a better interior then the G. If pricing is a consideration, the 8 goes for lots cheaper then the G, and insurance is cheaper. The G looks awesome with a body kit, but somehow the 8 has a semi exotic look to it that the G doesn't.

The 8 has had some mechanical issues, but the 350/G35 has also had it's share of startup issue too, so if you think any car is trouble free, you should get a porcshe.
Yes, there are engine issues with some 8's, mostly but not limited to hot area's, and mostly but not limited to automatics. A few here have had thier engines replaced 2 times and one guys is on his 3rd replacement. It is a small percentage but it is happening. Mazda has extanded the warranties on the engines, so other then the hassle, it will be covered. Most of us have had no issues at all ( I'm going on 3 years and never had a problem).

If your decision is so close between these cars but you don't want the hassle of "possible" trouble, then get the G. It doesn't mean the G won't have problems, it just means you won't have to worry about it until it happens... or you can get the 8 and worry about issues and never have them...your call. For the money the 8 is the better car, but if that .5 second 0-60 means something to you, then you should spend the extra 10 grand to get it...

This is like the 5th thread today with some noob posting a new thread saying that. Go buy a G35, while I continue to use my unique 8 every day of the year.

NoTears316 10-04-2006 08:42 AM

I heard the G35 has tampons in the first aid kit, no joke... how could you pass that up?

Smileynh 10-04-2006 08:52 AM

If you want to pay more upfront buy the G35.

The 8 will take the price difference back in Gas and/or resale value.

The 8's engine isn't anything like the G35. The reliability is comparable IMO. I'm certain if you look for problems with the G35 you'll find them.

A friend of mine convinced himself that the G35 was for him but after the 2 year lease he went back to BMW. He said the G35 just didn't 'feel' as good. The 8 always feels good IMO.
The steering, the brakes, the lively back end.

Do you want a sports car or a sedan?

staticlag 10-04-2006 08:55 AM

Once upon a time this guy got chronic back problems from the seat ergonomics of a G35.

Are you willing to take that risk?

Consumer Reports recently upgraded their reliability rating of the RX-8—based solely on actual survey responses from CR subscribers—from "poor" to "average". (First year reliability problems largely solved.) And Road & Track just finished their long term road test of an '04 RX-8—they rated its reliability "excellent".

It's funny how certain cars get picked on. Be aware that the VQ engines consume oil too. Some so much that the engines have to be replaced. And the 03/04 G35 (as well as Z) models have fuel hose issues .

zeblien 10-04-2006 09:24 AM

Do you wonder if these forums pop up under zclub.com and g35club.com
-->keep my g35 or go with an 8?

Would be interesting to see what they say.

9291150 10-04-2006 09:48 AM

Geez! The guy asks a legit question and gets this crap.

Kalix, if you concluded that the renesis is not reliable based on "so many blogs, reports, and so many other threads," than your analytical skills are lacking.

Otherwise, having driven both and considered both, the differences are simple. Do you prefer revs vs. torque, merits of light vs. heavy, mazda service vs. infinity service; here mazda won 2 to 1. Better rear seat access and interior design on the 8, better exterior style and slightly better fuel economy on the G35, so even split. Throw in price and the uniqueness of the rotary, and it was real easy for me.

So decide based on what do YOU want in a car? The rotary requiring regular oil checks and some reliability issues in hot climates should not be the deciding factor for an enthusiast.

zenmoused 10-04-2006 09:58 AM

If you want something that's unique and a blast to drive, buy an 8. If you want to meet the status-quo and drive a car that goes slightly faster in a straight line, by all means get the G-35.

An additional G35 on the road would make our cars all the more unique ;-)

playdoh43 10-04-2006 10:03 AM

realsitically speak in real market transaction prices, there is at least a 10 thousand dollar difference between rx8 vs G35 of similar equiptment. even though the rx8 depreciates like crazy, if you buy used, you can really get one for a very cheap price. 10 thousand dollars can go a LONG way...
