RX-8 Flamed blow out - Any ideas?

Well here is the story i was coming from wedding rehearsal and getting ready to meet up with my folks for dinner, thought i would stop by the auto-wash (being lazy) and have the car looking super clean for papadeux, anyway i got out the auto-wash and the car started to hesistate and putter halfway down the service road i was unable to go over 40mph. So i pulled over and the car dies and the check engine light is flashing , hell i figure water got in the engine some how or the intake so i inspect everything and nothing checked the filter (bone dry) , what else could it be. So i waited a little while and and it cranked back up no issues ate then drove home got about 20 mins along and the same issue this time i saw sh!t flying out the back so i pulled over and there was this:

So i figured at this point the cat is gone even though the glow looks nice , had the code checked out and it said fould spark plug , im like ok ill buy that so i bought new plugs wires and spent saturday changing them out. Sweet now that im done and its darks reset the ECu light stayed on F-it , lets go ride, so my boy grabs his camera and we get about 30 mins out - no issues - go eat come back home and it started all over again so my boy notices something coming out the exhaust so he grabs the camera and this is what we got;

Now im screwed till i can get it to the dealer , mind you in the upside down vid i was only doing about 43mph trying to make it home cause we were on a bad road to get stuck on , felt like i was only running off one rotor.
Any ideas till i get it to the dealer ?

LAWLZ

whatever it is I am sure you need a new Cat now

alnielsen 11-17-2008 12:26 PM

Yep, looks like the cat is gone. But, you have another problem also. There is a lot of unburned fuel in the exhaust causing the flame. Check plugs and coils.

Uncivilizedracer 11-17-2008 12:38 PM

All that was checked and replaced ! Got to be something else .

nvrfalter 11-17-2008 12:40 PM

i thought you said on youtube you already got a midpipe or supercat or something

Trim might be off. Might want to try resetting your ECU. How's your gas mileage? Same/better/worse? If there's spent fuel you'll know it there.

Yeah i got one to replace it but its not going to do anygood if its still going to be heating up like that

Uncivilizedracer 11-17-2008 12:43 PM

I did both resets and as soon as i try to crank it up the light is on again - gas mileage cant even be determinded right now as soon as the engine gets warm its hesistating and i cant go over 40mph

Brettus 11-17-2008 12:57 PM

one rotor is not firing perhaps ?

I doubt that would make the exhaust over heat that much though

ShinkaTeen 11-17-2008 03:48 PM

i have an idea,... part it out... and sell me you clear corners :]....

worth a try.

04RX8man 11-17-2008 03:57 PM

if one rotor was not firing you will get a whole lot of unburnt fuel in your exhaust so yes it would explain it .

Uncivilized :
This all started to happen after the car wash right ?
It has to be related to water in the electrics - perhaps one of the plugs going to a coil .

alnielsen 11-17-2008 05:21 PM

Make sure that the wires are fully on the spark plugs. It has happened to others.

And if the cat is plugged you won't be able to get revs. I have had 4 replaced on my car. A miss-firing engine will cook a cat.

+1
I had 3 bad coils and i had to limp to mazda, by the time I got there my exhaust had a good bit of smoke comming from it

Reason #1,376 to not go to the auto car wash

Uncivilizedracer 11-24-2008 04:45 PM

Changed out the plugs and wires and the car wont start at all shit!!

nvrfalter 11-24-2008 05:06 PM

damn dude looks like youre having cat problems

otakurx 11-25-2008 09:41 AM

Pix of the old plugs please. Can tell a lot by how they look. Will tell us how the engine is running internally.

Uncivilizedracer 11-26-2008 12:27 PM

ill take pics of them tonight , the cat is the last of my worries right now

Rootski 11-26-2008 12:38 PM

Your cat is done, son. Looks like you had a misfire or two and the unburnt fuel lit off in the cat. The good news is, it should be covered under warranty. The better news is you could just buy a race pipe and never worry about it again.
