rx-8 Discontinued in near future

You guys probably heard but for all that hasn't heres the deal. In 2011 the rx-8 series is going to be discontinued due to lack of stock being sold. Mazda's currently working on a new rotary as rumors say and might release a new rotary type car. (rumors say it's a 7 remake, some say it might be a 9.) rx-9 sounds a little lame imo but we'll have to see the outcome. This all brings me to a a problem. Me being a previous 8 owner lost more poor baby in a crash, and have yet to save enough for another. So it all comes down to this, what should i do?? Get enough money and hopefully find a used 8, somehow get a crazy good job to pay for a new 8, or wait for this "new car". I don't know about you guys, but most of us love the 8 because its a unique car, which is also why it's productions coming to a end. But yea, you can all agree with me that the 8 is a car we all should experience. So what should i do guys i___i. I honestly dont wanna buy a car thats already been moded even though, those are usually the cheapest.

Yes, it is coming to and end and not really news to most of us (sorry to burst your bubble).

Very little information has been confirmed on a next rotary car and most of the information is merely speculation. Many people are of the opinion "I'll believe it when I see it". I'm definitely of the optimistic viewpoint and waiting expectantly, though there's honestly so little information that there's no reason to be surprised if we never see anything.

Only you can decide if you want to buy another one. Unless we know your situation and what is reasonably a responsible choice, we can't advice you on what to do. You can get an 8 for pretty cheap now... Still not one of the cheapest cars around, but if you're fine with a few miles and one of the earlier years, you can easily find some pretty cheap, clean options. If you want a new car soon, then don't bother waiting for mazda's "new rotary". It may never happen. "Inside sources" have been talking about it for at least a year or 2 now but we have nothing to show for it. The 16x was first shown about 3 years ago now. Can't rule out the potential, but there's too little information to be planning for it.

Yea man. There are a lot of used rx8s out there but it all comes down to me being greedy i guess. Cheapest are the 04s and i don't really mind the salvage title seeing how it only takes a reported 50$ to make one. That is seeing that its just a minor thing. But it all comes down to me wanting the minor yearly tweak changes they give. =p but yea, more advice would be great for me!! thanks for the quick reply btw

There weren't a whole lot of really significant changes between years of the series 1. It was mostly color options and variations in the Shinka or other special editions. Unless you're looking at an auto, I can't think of any feature changes that were worth mentioning.

I would be VERY careful with a salvage title. Some can be minor, but they can also be very very major. If there was frame damage etc, you don't want to even consider dealing with that car. Just make sure you have all the information you can get and make sure the explanation of the salvage title can be backed up. If there's any doubt at all, don't go with a salvage title.

If it were me, I'd be looking for a used R3...

New Yorker 08-30-2010 12:47 PM

If you could swing it, I would get an unsold Series II, R3 or regular. Yeah, it'll cost more than a used 8 – but I believe the 8 is more sensitive to owner maintenance than ordinary cars; a used one would always have me wondering how the original owner really drove/maintained it.

Plus, a new 2010 or '11 would really be a steal. Just think… in the world of new cars, you'd be getting a lot of great (and refined) rotary-engined sports car for not a lot of money. Not only that, suddenly it wouldn't matter when the new RX comes out – you'd be all set.

What's more, when the new one finally comes, I'd still want to give Mazda a year or two to get the bugs out.

Incidentally, I've read numerous accredited sources (written by paid, full time, journalists) saying there will, indeed, be a new rotary-engined Mazda; the project is happening as we speak. The only place I've heard otherwise is here, on the internet. I don't have to tell you how reliable that is.

I feel like Mazda could still do things with the RX8. With the S2 revisions, they've finally built a stable base to build off of. If they released a F/I model with either sequential turbos or a supercharger, then it would make the RX8 viable for a few more years. Additionally, if they released the kit as a warrantied MazdaSpeed kit, then I bet it would sell insanely.

Perhaps I'm just bothered that the S2 will end before enough sell to justify an aftermarket backing.

there are only 4 new 2010 RX-8 for sale within 250 miles of Portland. 2 are ATs and 2 R3s

neofreak 08-30-2010 01:24 PM

I flew from San Francisco to TN to buy my 2009.. don't worry about only a few being local!

orochikid 08-30-2010 02:44 PM

Dint want to sound arrogant, me being a newb joining this forum, previously crashing my old 8 and asking if i should get an r3. But yea, i really want an r3, beautiful car. I live in the la area and theres a bunch of r3s here. There was this one dealership in glendale that had at least 4 r3s. But yea, getting a new ones really probably the best chouce seeing how its so maintenance heavy, and i wouldn't know how the previous owner took care of it. But thats a heavy save for me. I'll work on the r3, and if i somehow under god's love or something (lol) find a used r3, ill loan some money from the mafia lol.

How old are you?

Pico 09-01-2010 07:03 AM

This is old news
However, its been stated the Mazda won't let the Rotary die completely. There will be a predecessor, the question is how soon.

Huey52 09-01-2010 07:23 AM

... successor... but Pico was on a roll. ;)

Next should be the RX-10, better sounding.
And put two seals on each tip of the rotor

Renesis07 09-03-2010 05:41 PM

Test drive one.

If you like it. Look for the used one you want.

Plain and simple.

Read the stickies first.
