RX-8 died on me :(.... -New engine-

So I bought my 2005 red RX-8 about 3 weeks ago.. Driving very casually only redlined it about 4-5 times.. I was hearing an absurd beating noise from the engine that i paid no attention to since i was told this was normal... Anyways, i was driving from Montreal to St. Jerome and back which is about 100km drive on a scorching afternoon (30+ degrees celsius).. My car has stalled in such conditions on the highway after engaging the clutch before so i was playing with the gas pedal to keep the revs up when engaging the clutch. Eventually on my way back to Montreal the CEL was blinking then remained lit. When I parked the car, the beating sound become almost unbearable, close to a knocking sound. I removed battery for 10 minutes and plugged it back in, and CEL was off but knock remained... while driving, the sound became even louder so i parked the car and turned it off. Then i noticed the car was leaking immense amounts of oil.. I checked underneath the car and it seemed as though the rear main seal was broken since it was leaking in between the engine and tranny.. I towed it to mazda and the mechanic there told me right away that i had no compression as well as a blown engine... Luckily enough though, all the CSR asked from me was proof of purchase and mazda agreed to change my engine under warranty the following day. :D!

Thats lucky, your engine must be totally screwed. its a shame we dont get your warranty over here in the U.K

Aloush 06-29-2012 02:56 AM

Yeah man, I got SUPER lucky.. Despite that, i'm car-less for 3 weeks now till the engine is replaced... But hey, at least you guys over there don't have our weather nor our roads:P.. It's disgusting over here..

Bladecutter 06-29-2012 02:12 PM

Let me get this straight...

You drove your car nearly 40 miles with it making horrible noises, and a flashing CEL, and your response was to ignore them, and just reset the car by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes?

I am going to lay money down right now and predict you're going to need another engine replacement in the near future.

Pay attention to your car in the future, and try fixing things before they get that bad next time around. No engine makes horrible noises, and yet is perfectly normal.

BC.

AMAXRX 06-29-2012 02:23 PM

FFR, when engine makes terrible noises, the correct response is to shut it off and pull over till you can figure out whats wrong.

Otherwise, congratz on the new engine and glad to hear warranty is covering it. Had mine replaced 2 months ago for low compression :)

SubliminalPollution 06-29-2012 02:30 PM

I thought it was common sense to pull over and shut of the engine not keep driving when you hear strange noises coming from then engine bay. Then figuring out what's wrong before driving it again.

Common sense ain't so common nowadays.

Congratz on the engine! Sucks that it's going to take 3 weeks. When I got mine replaced it only took 5 business days.

Seems to take longer for Canadians for some reason, assuming that's where OP is.

SubliminalPollution 06-29-2012 02:51 PM

Ohhhhh! Regardless it still sucks.

It didn't bother me much since my Eight isn't a daily driver.

nycgps 06-29-2012 06:18 PM

*facepalm*

and OP think he is lucky, well yea he is, consider how he treat his "engine noise"

*facepalm again*

sucks to see we have stupid owners like that

*facepalm again, again, and again*

laurichj 06-29-2012 07:52 PM

The RX-8 didn't die, you killed it. Then you drug the corpse behind it. Pay for the engine yourself.

SubliminalPollution 06-30-2012 12:54 AM

^Ouch.

Wise Words Of Wisdom. Know your car.

nycgps 06-30-2012 06:29 AM

there is a a reason why Mazda does not want to pay for warranties, thx to a holes like op. its just sad that most other honest owners are affected by ppl like him

Mazurfer 06-30-2012 09:57 AM

He is one lucky "MF"..........................that's all.

monchie 06-30-2012 04:57 PM

Kk guys i think there's a horrible misunderstanding here:S... The day i bought the car, it was making a faint beating noise that i was worried about.. I had the car inspected before purchase by a reputable mechanic who has owned and worked on RX-8's for over 7 years... He gave me the go for the purchase.. When i drove that long distance, the noise remained the same until my way back when the check engine light popped on and i pulled over into an empty parking lot and noticed the sound became a lot louder... I drove it straight to my mechanic first after replugging the battery... He could not diagnose the sound and told me to bring it to Mazda as soon as possible to see whats wrong, but to drive it as easy as possible (without exceeding 2k rpm).. I did that and well the rest is what i posted in my first post... Jeez guys i thought i'd cut my story short and focus on the main-points just to help someone else out in my situation... Didn't think refraining from writing my life story would cause this much dispute:S.... I guess the people on this forum are hungry for confrontations instead of aiding other members... Anyways, as for those who said i killed my engine... How is it possible to have destroyed apex seals, while only owning the car for 2 weeks, and having the oil way above the half way line on the dip stick..? Long story short, you guys should really take it easy to jumping the gun that quickly... And as for me.. I will use this as a reference to include washroom timing, how much i ate, what i had in the trunk, how long it took me to take a leak, etc..., next time i post in hopes of receiving or providing help...

Sounds like you need to find yourself a new mechanic lol.

Aloush 06-30-2012 08:04 PM

My only intentions of this post were to put my experience out there to help another fellow RX-8 owner in my shoes.... I searched all over these forums and couldn't find anyone in the same situation... And anyways, i really think you guys are forgetting that i've owned the car for 2 bloody weeks.... If a mechanic tells me a faint beating sound is normal on a rotary engine(i've only owned piston engines before), and there's no information about these engines making these sounds.. Hell, wouldn't we all believe him?? But believe you me, after this happening because of him... I will never go back to him... I am not a mechanic, i'm a student... Only time i have to fiddle around with a car would be in the summer... Luckily this happened now, and with even more luck, Mazda gave me the new engine... Or else i would have lost all the money invested into my car and would be car-less for a majority of the summer, as well as part of the semester... Re-reading the previous post makes me more and more disappointed each time... I understand i didn't provide enough information but the fact that you guys continue to formulate your own stories is horrible... How can anyone get help on this forum without being flammed... And this being my first post on this forum makes it even worse.... I really hope not everyone on rx8club is like this.....

Big time man, i should've known when he torqued my wheels on way to tight that i couldn't get it off without an impact gun...(this was on my altima)

Before someone flames you, to multi quote press that button to the right of "Quote".

Like DarkBrew said some are sensitive to noob posts... As you'll hopefully find out, this is a very informative site that you can pretty much search for anything you have troubles with or need help with. Before you bought your car you should checked out the website or done some more research on the car. But hey you got lucky with the new engine, and now you know for next time. We've all made mistakes, just gotta learn from them.

Thanks, I'm still new to this whole forum thing:p: not to sure how to use it yet..

I actually did a lot of research on the Eight before i bought it.. My friend has one (2005 nordic green) and I've been inlove with it since December 2011.. Ever since then I've research all the TSB's, recalls, common issues, price of repairs, etc..., The more I searched this car, the more I fell inlove.. I couldn't live without one so I decided to let my little v6 go and buy an RX-8 and despite the issues with the engine and all, I couldn't be happier!
