Rust spots in the trunk gutter
 

I was cleaning my car and noticed some very small rust spots had formed near the weather stripping and the trunk hinge mechanism. I know some owners of 6's have had this problem but was wondering if anyone else has noticed this on their 8's.

I just noticed the same thing on my 3 days old RX-8.
The rust is not on the car itself but small rusty metal
flakes.
Perhaps from the hinges?

I am going to try to clean with isopropoyl alcohol today per the TSB issued for the 6.

Any pics please?????

I've noticed that I too have a rust spot on the drivers side hinge as well. How'd the isopropyl work out?

the isopropyl did a great job of removing the rust stains, there is still one under the hinge which I could not get at very well with the Q-tips I was using.

I got this from the Mazda 6 board and it sounds like a similar problem:

"They may also complain of surface stains that are visible around the trunk lid rubber stoppers when the trunk is open.

-A lubricant used at the factory to ease door weather stripping installation may react negatively with the door sash and inner door sash rail causing surface stains.

-The two (2) trunk lid rubber stoppers may cause staining on the surface around the rubber stoppers.

Stains on the painted areas of the doors and under the trunk lid rubber stoppers should be removed, then sealed.

The type of lubricant used during vehicle production has been changed to eliminate future staining.

Customers having either of these concerns should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedures..."

If these "stains' show up on the 8, we should have it corrected by the dealer under warranty. This shouldn't be a do-it-yourself fix on new vehicles.

Exactly, I agree with zoomalot. Our paint and body work is covered under a 4 or 5 year warranty. If it rusts, fades, or chips due to application error they need to take care of it. It doesn't say anywhere that they will give us the info to fix it ourselves. Plus I would want Mazda to document it happening to my car so that two years down the road they can say that it was something I put on the car if it happens again.

you may be right what is the best way to handle this go back to the dealer or call Mazda USA?

Go back to the dealer first.

Well, it isn't "rusting", it's staining. Just cleaning it off is your best action, unless you really trust your dealer.

Hmmm....and some mod closed my thread on the foamy oil on the dipstick . Mine was the first one pics! I did find that article interesting.
