Rust On Rotors
 

I saw in a thread that the dealer will paint the rotors so that they wont rust like they do. I cant find that thread anymore and was wondering if it was in the Mazda bulletin for them to actually fix that or if they just went ahead and painted em?

I just mentioned it to my dealer and they painted them under warranty. Didn't have to take anything in to show them. I think it's going to depend alot on the dealer as to weather or not they'll paint them at no charge. Some folks here did them themselves. Doesn't take too long, and I think there's a DIY for it in the DIY section here. Good Luck!

Yeah, I'm do'n the calipers blue and if the dealer wont do it, then when I paint the calipers I'll do the hubs also.

Is this just a cosmetic thing? I don't see how it could really hurt anything.

It doesnt hurt anything but the hub being hella rusty like they get just doesnt look great. So thats why I want the hub painted silver to match my car then I'm also doing the calipers blue b/c that is the accent color that I'm using for my silver car.

Won't really hurt anything, just looks like shit. Especially on a beautiful car like the 8. :)

I've had my car's brake rotors repainted twice...now the rust is back. Gonna have to buckle down and do a big-brake upgrade to fix it forever :)

I just had the dealership paint the hubs and they do look great, but not NEARLY as good as a huge brake kit w/ sexy giant calipers and slotted rotors.

$7 to paint it urself or a couple of G's for a good brake kit upgrade? For now I think I'll deal with repainting when needed.

No, you got it all wrong. The everlasting hub finish is just a side-effect of a big brake kit ;)

I tried to get my hubs painted by 3 different delaers and all 3 of them shot me down. They said that "Mazda does not warranty mechanical cosmetic issues". If anyone in the SoCal area had success please let me know.

You should bitch at them like you have never bitched before. I had a similar issue when a service manager told me the center console button was supposed to be at an angle. I came back to get some more things done [one of them being painting my brake hubs] and when I mentioned the fact that I knew for a fact it was an issue on a lot of cars but was not like that from the factory, they replaced the whole lid assembly.

Does the 06 have this problem?

I talked to my dealership last week about my brake rust problems and I was told by the service manager to bring the car in so they can look at it and take pics to send them on to Mazda to see how they want to address my concerns. The dealer took pics of the calipers and rotors and told me they were going to speak to the district rep and get back with me this week.
They called me today and told me that Mazda had authorized them to replace my rotors with the new ones from the ’06 model. These are supposed to have a coating on the rotor hub and the fins are supposed to be coated as well.
I informed the service manger that is was only one of the issues I had with the rust problem. There still is the rust from the calipers as well as the back plates. I told him that I had a plan to resolve this myself with the powder coating of the calipers and back plate and the addition of zinc/e-coated rotors. I also explained to him my dilemma about getting my set of calipers powder coated but needing someone to take my calipers off and house my car while this work was done. He verbally agreed to do this work for me since I was willing to spend the $$ to get the calipers powder coated. He wanted to talk this over with Mazda as well, so I was told he would call me back when he knew something.
2 hours go by and I get a call back from the service manager with good news. Mazda has not only agreed to replace the rotors (4), but all calipers (the new ones from the ’06 – rust treated ones), and the new styled backing plates (treated as well). The dealership is in the process of ordering all the parts and I will schedule an appointment for next week to look over these new parts.
Mazda had issue with the powder coating of the calipers due to the complete tear down of the calipers and possible failure due to improper prep work during the powder coat process. Mazda didn’t want the dealer or themselves liable for this the calipers.
The crazy part about this is that I started ordering all the parts I would need to powder coat my calipers and back plates, replace my pads and to replace my rotors with cross drilled/slotted ones. I have canceled the orders I could, but I still have the new rotors on their way with the Axxis ult pads. If the new dealer rotors aren’t up to snuff I will just have the other rotors installed.
I will take pics of all the new parts with part #’s so others can get the process going at their dealerships.

I don't think mazda would do that for everybody.
