Isn't a rotary 944 just an RX-7?

StewyRX8 01-22-2007 12:05 PM

The resemblence is strinkingly close! Are we sure it's not a rebadged 2nd gen 7? :hahano:

and those pics would sure be mighty fine about now...

BlueRenesis82 01-22-2007 06:54 PM

well, considering that Mazda admitted that they tried to make the FC look like the 944....

something about a rocket scientist here

boffam 01-22-2007 07:03 PM

Speaking of resemblances, I give you the Porsche 924 (introduced 1975) and the first gen RX-7 (introduced 1979)...

Uhhh...considering the 924 came out only a few months after the TR7 I don't think so. But Mazda was hardly the only maker ripping off the Old World back then. Toyota is still at it.

What's important for Mazda fans is how strong the Mazda styling DNA has become. How many cars out there does the RX-8 look like? That's right...none.

There was a business professor at my university that used to work for Porsche on the 944 team.

I never had him, but he had a reputation for being an arrogant prick. He also had begrudgingly admitted in classes that one of the reasons the 944 left the North American market was because the FC RX-7 undercut it by more than 10K and they were outmaneuvered by Mazda.

So I decided nothing would be more fitting, than for me to park my '87 FC turbo (looked identical to the one above - color and all) next to his Audi every chance I could get.

BlueRenesis82 01-23-2007 09:39 AM

i would have tried to avoid his class, how good at biz can the guy be if a company like Porsche was outmaneuvered and forced to pull one of their cars out of the North American market?

boffam 01-23-2007 09:58 AM

The 944 was never pulled out of any market. It was replaced with the 968.

944 sales started to tank (worldwide) in 1987 and the 968 did nothing to stop the slide, until the car was finally done in by the same sports car slump that eventually killed the FD.

It is true that the lower-priced Japanese competition hurt Porsche, and that the 944 was overpriced. The original 944 and 944 Turbo were bargains but Porsche got greedy and jacked the prices up ridiculously.
