Renesis Designed for 280hp?
I remember reading somewhere that the Renesis engine was originally developed with the capability of putting out 280hp without forced induction. Can anyone shed some light on this or is my mind playing tricks on me?

Yes, switch on your Playstation 2, start GT4 and play in arcade mode. A stock RX-8 has 283 hp when you start the time trial, I'm surprised too.
|
i believe that was what was stated for the rx-evolve, the prototype rx8. it has been detuned for (i think) emissions reasons, and possibly long term reliability reasons as well.

Isn't that Evolve only available in Japan? |
i'm pretty sure its not available anywhere. it was just a pre-production design for taking to autoshows.

Its probably capable, someone needs to open the renesis and give it a nice port, use a motec, put it on an engine dyno and show us~

I don't know if the Evolve ever really had 280hp, it was what Mazda was aiming for though.

LOL. I was joking!
Aside to mazda : If you wanted to give me 50 more horses, i wouldnt turn them down ;-) |
it was stated by mazda that the prototype's rx-8 renesis engine was putting out 280 hp, but it was a very diferent engine, one feture that can be seen in the prototype engine was the twin troutle body set up and 11,000 rpm tach with 10,500 rpm red line, but this was said by mazda and we know what mazda says about hp..... :wiggle:
it was also stated by several of mazda's people thet the renesis was as powerful as the last gen rx-7 that had 280 so....... |

yes, because the way it made this was by better breathing at hi rpms
look, i ask this same question to somebody well conected to mazda and what he found out was that the air intake system in the evolve and the rx-8 prototype was too complex and it was too expesive for mass production if you see the oficial renesis dyno from mazda you see that power starts to fall of after 8500 rpm it is speculated that in the prototype's engine the power line keeps going up to 9000+ rpm |
Crap…. Only 2755lbs?
And 19 inch rotors! |
oh man, 280 hp, 10.5k rpms, damn that would have been hot.

The road racing RX7s run a motect system, custome intake and header back exhaust with no cats, the car is in a mild tune state using 100+ octane, I would like to see what one of those could dyno at the wheels. Ive heard its making about 260hp on an engine dyno. Also the star mazda series cars run a motec and a STOCK renesis engine with a open header/collector muffler design and differnt intake and race gas (not sure what octane)..........Ive heard this combo ALSO makes about 260hp on an engine dyno. The road race car I was talking about is using the same 6spd trany and same length exhaust pipe, so it would be very similar to what you could do with a road car using basic bolt ons and the x-interceptor ecu. I think that if you got the best of the best for parts : Intake, Header, Exhaust, Pulles, Flywheel, Syn trany/diff fluid, plugs, wires, x-interceptor ecu, ect.... you could get around 280hp at the crank with this motor, maby on pump gas (93) but definetly on race gas.... that would be about 240hp at the wheels, of course you wouldnt get much of a tq boost staying NA, but it would be a nice kick in the pants. |

I will agree that it doesnt make any sense, for half the cost you could go turbo and get over 300whp, and for the same cost you could swap over to a 13b-rew, or pretty close to the same cost...... does it make sense, no is it possible, i think so |
1.6 liter Toyota Formula Atlantic engine makes over 280hp
Guys
The 11,000 rpm Toyota Formula Atlantic engines built by Hasselgren Engineering in Berkeley, CA make around 315 hp at the flywheel. I just did a story on one for Banzai Magazine ("Formula First" April 2006) that one of their engine builders installed in an AE-86 Corolla. Detuned for his car it makes 280 hp. If anyone has the money, give Hasselgren a call. I'll bet they can make a Renesis scream! |
