remember seeing something about a place to tuck a bottle of oil away under the hood?

Maybe im dreaming things up, but i remember coming across a post a long time ago about someone saying there was a place in the engine bay, out of the way, that was just the perfect size to sneak a bottle of oil in and have it fit snugly (you know for those times when you check the oil every 3rd tank and need to top it off)?

Am i just dreaming up things, or is this true? It's dark outside and i cant go looking under my hood at the moment, but just wanted to kinda ask, because if there is it would be nice to not have a bottle of oil bouncing around my trunk.

Also too, *if im not dreaming things up* and there are a few people who have done this (stowed away a quart of oil under their hood) is this safe? i mean i know the rotary gets hotter then other engines, but its not going to make the plastic melt or anything is it?

Cheers,
Jeff

i still have no idea why in gods name you would store more oil under the hood. Thats why you have a trunk

I think everyone on that thread utterly missed the point.

You have to keep one in the engine bay AND one in the trunk.

Gotta keep the 50/50 weight balance thing going! ;)

if your only concern is to keep 1 spare oil bottle, you can easily put it in the trunk and not have the danger of something hitting the bottle and leaking, or worse yet dislodging and coming out of its spot in the engine bay.

i find this to be more of a joke than a solution.

With it under the hood the bottle is upright and very secure. If the bottle is open and you put it in the trunk, there is a chance it can leak if it tips over. Just my thought.

if you keep an open bottle of oil in your car you might have brain damage

I keep a quart in that location. I didn't want it in the trunk in case it leaked. Leaking in the engine bay isn't as bad as in the trunk, and I didn't want to hear it rattling in the trunk. It's more convient too, I don't want to have to get in the back seat, get my key out to remove the passthrough, pull the bottle from the compartment (assuming it even fits - I never tried), walk back around to the hood. Then repeat to put it away. Now it's right there next to my washer fluid, and I keep a small rag tucked up under the nearby wire bundle.

As for heat issues, I haven't had any problems (same quart has been there for 2500 miles now), though the plastic does soften a bit.

car i had in college had a leaking headgasket, and so i had to constantly put oil in (1qt every 500 miles). i kept a few bottles of oil in a plastic bag in the truck.

one day i went to add some more oil, and one of the bottles, which had never been opened, had leaked. thankfully it was in bag which contained most of the oil so it was relatively easy to clean up.

I just pull it out of the passthrough compartment by reaching through the trunk.

^^wow, these things are amazing for oil ... and yanno, you can loosen the strap on the emergency kit and it fits right in.

I put mine in the trunk but it tucked far to the rear of the trunk where there is a little storage area for the rear seat passengers...In other words back seat passengers can pull down the divider and see my oil. It fits two containers of oil very secure and upright. I also keep a shop rag and my small funnel in there with them.
