Damn, so I would really have to pay more attention if I were to drive stick with this car. I'm hearing impaired (60% hearing both ears) and the buzzer in my ol' '91 FC Vert was pretty loud.

Yup, Heard it tonight barely over the engine roar. Wish it was a little louder like the radio control "beep".

How about those with Automatics? My son said he test drove one and the chime was annoying as heck. I figure since it goes off at a lower RPM it's probably more audible.

I didn't hear the beep, honk, or rattle when I was racing a Corvette down the Interstate earlier. If there is a beep, you most likely won't hear it if you are not concentrating on listening for it.

Inadvertently I hit the fuel cutoff. It didn't take long for me to backoff at that point.

133 mph and smooth as glass. Kinda scary though with cars in the other lanes. Also kinda foolish too. But hey, had to get on it atleast once.

Since this is my first rotary, I have a question about the high RPMs. With regular engines, going past redline is, understandably, bad. With the rotary however, is it bad for the engine to go up to the fuel cutoff? The fuel cutoff is there to keep you from going into the "dangerous" area of RPMs right? So even if you miss the chime and go to the fuel cutoff mark you aren't hurting anything?

I finally got my car over the 600 mile break in period, and figured I'd see what this redline beep is.

at 8500, it starts a buzzer (sort of - its a constant noise, but not explicitly a buzz). I was in 2nd gear, the radio (stock) volume was set at 9, the ALC (automatic volume increase at speed) was set at 2, the A/C was on 2. There is no way you could miss the buzzer. unless you know what its telling you, you might think it was an out of gas buzzer or your radar detector or something, but it is very definitely noticeable.

I know there are some other threads about how (un)loud the buzzer is. Anyone FOUND the damn thing under the dash somewhere? I haven't been able to crawl under there at that 8500rpm moment. Anyone got a shop manual yet? Let's fix it!

I LIKE to hear the buzzer go off, I want a nice tone, it's a GOOD THING!

Should be simple to replace the (non)buzzer with one of higher db level from Radio Shack or some electronics outlet, like at:

...enter 'buzzer' I get ten units ranging from 70db to 108 db, should suit anyone short of stone deaf.

I want to know when I hit 8500 or 9300 without looking down. The engine is so quiet, engine sound clues don't help much.

Heck I don't look at my V1 to know there's radar out there...

I test drove one sunday

windows up, moonroof closed, radio off, you couldn't miss the tone. not a buzz, definitely a tone. sounded nice. kicked on right when the tach touched the hash marks at 8500, stayed on until I shifted.

What do you do with the rest of the Gears...
 

I redlined mine to hear the beep. I was at 8500 at the start of the red section. I looked down and saw the speed at 62 mph.

I backed off cause I thought something has to be wrong. If it is 62 at 8500 in SECOND gear what the hell are all the other gears for. I mean most speed limits nationally are 70 and I think if I went to 9300 I might have got that.

What are the speeds for you all in Second on a red line. Is this thing really right. IF so Damn its good...:p

Just in case anyone's curious, the automatic also has the warning chime which kicks in above redline when the car is in the quasi-manual mode.

Hey mmjames, I see you have seen the rotary light :)

Here's how I think of shifting in a 6MT:

You can either drive it 1-2-3-4-5-6, stoplight, 1-2-3-4, stoplight etc

OR you can try to stay in gear ranges except for starting:

1nd and 2nd (3rd) = when you really want to haul ass
3rd and 4th = when you need 'spririted' response at midspeed
5th and 6th = go to the grocery store laid back driving 20 mph up

The 2nd method is more fun but takes more concentration. The engine's RPM range affords very flexibile power in most gears. The 1st offers an easy drivable everyday car. Take your pick! :D

I think you are on to something upon recollection, I am usually in Second in town and 4th and sometimes 5th Freeways.

I think mine goes higher than that, speed wise, in second gear. Also, 60 MPH in second isn't that uncommon, is it? My fathers 2001 Nissan Maxima went to 60 MPH in second gear, and that is a "normal" 6000 redline or so.

how to disable warning chime?
 

How would you disable this chime? Is there a fuse that can be removed?

i test drove a cobra many years ago and was going 75 in second and no where near redlining.

i'm not sure but i redlined mine the other day and i heard the beep loud and clear. the radio was on and the engine was loud. i dont know why anybody would want to turn it off. it's music to my ears.

I have heard it twice. Maybe I have better hearing than other forum members, but it was clearly audible, and I mean clearly audible. I couldn't imagine not hearing it, unless i were to have the stereo very loud.

Isn't the chime annoying? so it comes on everytime you push the 8 to its limits?

It's more of a reminder to shift, since the car just doesnt care when you redline. Seriously. I often find myself woolgathering in the morning traffic and am usually doing 7000RPM in first before I notice that I need to shift. You can hold it at 8500RPM in second and have a normal conversation in the car if you accelerate slowly.

I like my chime. I hear it very often!
