A redline a day ????

Okay guys, I have only had my 8 for just over a month, you would think at my age ( 64 ) I would have let the novelty of owning one of these machines wear off. ARE YOU F#$%&*G KIDDING ME ??????????? I can't wait to get into the bloody thing, I make excuses to go somewhere,,,,,,,anywhere,,,,,,,this bloody car is awesome,,,,,,even my wife, who has never gotten excited about any car we have ever owned is completely wowed by it !
Okay so I have been taking it all in, this forum is very informative and I've seen a number of comments about " a redline a day ". Oh sure I've beeped it a few times at 9000, this morning for example, back road, no traffic, coming out of the turn and floored it in second, got the beep then paddle shifted into 3rd. and gunned it,,,,,,Holy poop,,,,,,it sure can move, it was beeping like Hell doing 147 kph in 3rd. before I paddled it into 4th.
So c'mon tell me the truth, I know the 8 likes high revs, but is this thing about a redline a day good or bad ??? Machine is bloody unbelievable,,,,,,,,ZOOM, ZOOM !!! Yes, my beautiful 8 with metallic blue and all black interior, my GT 8 is automatic, I haven't driven an 8 with manual tranny so I can't compare but this delightful piece of engineering from Mazda is an absolute masterpiece !

yes its true, a redline a day keeps the carbon away, i tend to shift past the 9k point

RIWWP 03-05-2010 06:40 PM

It's all good. Don't worry :)

The redline is for the transmission mainly, overheating the transmission fluid. Granted, too long at redline is also generating alot of engine heat that can cause your oil to break down, but wide open throttle (WOT) to redline and then shift is perfectly fine. No danger to the engine itself, unlike piston engines.

Good even. You get better carbon burnoff with high load high RPM burn, which helps improve the life of the engine. It isn't a solve-all. Kind of like taking cholesterol medication for your heart. Just helps keep down one risk.

Keep blasting away :) I redline all the time, every single day.

On a typical work-day commute, I usually redline 4-5 times a day. On weekends, all bets are off.

OP is your 8 modded as I know it's technically impossible to hit 9k rpm in a stock 8 with auto due to the 7.5k rev limiter?

Mazurfer 03-05-2010 07:46 PM

^........that sounds mighty familiar Robrecht! :yesnod:

Buteman..............would be even more fun if it was a manual instead of auto.

Funny thing, I've had mine a little over 4 years now and I still can't wait to drive it! I always look forward to it and sometimes I take it for spins just for the hell of it! Never done that with any other car. Takes a long @ss time to get the smile of your face!

You are right of course, all I ever did was drive manual, a car with an auto. tranny ? never heard of such a thing when I was a teenager ( Scotland 1965 ) great days back then,,,,,,,,mini skirts,,,,before f-----g panty hose, horrific bloody things ! But Mazda, the way they did this auto. tranny is nothing short of bloody brilliant,,,,,,and they sure as Hell did put the fun back in driving. Six speed auto,,,,put it into drive and away you go,,,,or kick the gearstick over towards you and you can shift with the stick,,,,,,,or,,,this is the best part, the absolute cat's vagina,,,,,paddle shift,,,,great fun indeed boys. And by the way, what do you call a Scotsman with a sheep under each arm ??
A PIMP !!

jasonrxeight 03-05-2010 08:23 PM

hah, just enjoy the car.
this car is all about handling, so auto or manual doesnt really matter.
all you do is go very fast into the conners and enjoy the G force.

I looked at the photos of your car, beautiful, you sure have added a great deal to your car, did you do all of the additions yourself ?

Drive the MT, then you'll be saying WOW ;)

Amazing car regardless !

I think I did too many redlines, stayed in high rpm too long, and broke something.

I used to get a blinking CEL when I stayed in high rpm too long, now the CEL is steady.

Too much of a good thing I guess.

What did I break?

Must have broken the weakness button, drives fine, most realiable sports car in its class.

flashing means missfiring, could be plugs or coils
now it could be something else
just get the cold pulled.

It's your coils.

RotaryP7 03-05-2010 10:31 PM

I love when it beeps.. :)
mmm mmm good..

Mazurfer 03-06-2010 07:59 AM

^..............

Thank you, and "yes", I have done all the mods myself...............nobody touches my baby but me! :nono:

Oh.....that reminds me, probably have some new mods I need to add to my list!
Staying NA(normally aspirated) for now, too many other projects going on in my life.
Need to take some more pics as well. The only recent one is the one with the mailboxes to the side of the car, and that was about a year ago.

Oh...........I'm not that far behind you in age..........I'm a young 50!

Razz1 03-06-2010 03:17 PM

HELL at 64 you ought to know about health.

Red line a day to keep the carbon away.

Drive safe don't get a ticket.

Jack Deth 03-07-2010 08:39 AM

So he has an automatic, didn't know you could still rev to 9000 RPM with the auto.

HockeyRX-8 03-07-2010 08:43 AM

^you can...you just need the Cobb AP

misfire, can be caused by anything required to maintain combustion.

air, fuel, compression.

likely culprit:
battery
batter connection
coils
spark plugs
fuel pump

04RX8man 03-07-2010 08:00 PM

Blinking CEL on the 8.... 9 times out of 10 it's coils....especially if you're over the 40k mile mark....

I'm back to terrorize the boards after quite a long absence...lol
