Rattles
 

I know that this has been talked about before, but I want to talk about it again. My car does not have any rattles when driving. When I turn on my radio to about 19 or 20 and I am playing rap with the bass at +5 and treble at +2, I get rattling in my driver's side door. I don't know what to do about this. I read Polak's thread, but I think that is mainly towards rattling in general. Also, when the window is rolled down, I can squeeze the door together at the top and the rattling stops. I want to take it by the dealership and have them fix it, but I think that they would laugh at me if I told them that I was bringing it in for a rattle. It's just that it sounds so much better when the rattling goes away and it would be worth a visit to the dealer if they could solve the problem. What do you think?

Taking it in for a rattle is perfectly acceptable, only problem is fixing rattles occasionally causes other rattles to develop. If you've only got that one rattle, I'd probably leave it alone. I'd say wait until you round up a pretty good orchestra of rattles before doing anything about it.

maybe if you turn it up louder, then the rattling will be drowned out!!!

Holy crap I listen to the radio at 10 and think that's pretty loud...

I remember the days when I thought my hearing would never suffer.

Fast-forward to age 35, and I have a small continuous ringing in my ears, otherwise known as "tinnitus".

I've been a musician for 25 years, so music is huge in my life. I know it's no fun to be told to "turn it down, young man!" but trust me. If you reduce the level to moderately loud, you might be able to enjoy it for the rest of your life.

Or you can enjoy it really loud now, and not at all when you get older.

I swear the iPod is gonna leave behind a complete generation of deaf people.

I listen to head phones all day for work so my ears are pretty sensitive to loud sounds. I think my iPod at the exact middle of the volume bar is too loud for me and I need to keep it turned below that. I can't imagine the volume that high on a car stereo. I'd be having some sort of attack frantically trying to get out of the car!!! :eek:

On Hearing:
That's about where I listen to grunge or myself while doing 3 digits with the windows down, but I also agree that it's not good for a prolonged period of time and also practice safe headphoning.

I also spend 10-16 hours per month at the indoor & outdoor ranges and stress 2 layers of hearing protection indoors. We do practice an occasional "reality shoot" where we do a close combat sim using no muffs or plugs, but I stay with the larger bore, non-magnum handguns while doing so, lessens the chance of hearing loss being sub-sonic.

On Rattles:
The only rattles that I thought I had turned out to be my wheel lock vibrating in the glove box and some coins in the coinbox. Pretty solid car so far...

If you have a problem with the rattles, go ahead and take it in while still under warranty, I would.

Could be that motor mount out of wack. They just might replace the all. Thats what they are doing to my 8.

7 months and I had one rattle, in the drivers door for a couple of months, sounded like a loose window.

...just went away one day. The moral, give it some time. I agree that looking for rattles (i.e. removing door panels) can lead to other rattles, so avoid at all costs.

I HATE RATTLES. I love driving with no music to hear the car "working". The 8 has been solid, and it sounds better than anything. I hate exhaust noise, love engine noise. Hate turbos and wastegates, love hearing metal spinning..at 9000 rpm. Rattles get in the way of this euphoria.

If you keep listening at those volume levels, after awhile you won't be able to hear the rattle anymore; you won't be able to hear the rap either but no loss there. You might try listening to music instead, turn down the volume and stop yelling at people in everyday conversation. They can hear you just fine. ;) Do you enjoy sound? Turn it down or it won't be very long before you won't be able to enjoy it the way you can now.

Think we're exaggerating? I know a kid who lived on his cellphone like kids do now days. He wanted to enlist and join the Air Force. Took the physical and found out he has a PERMANENT 20% hearing loss in his right ear where his cellphone sits hours and hours a day. His reaction? Switch the phone to his left ear.....go figure.

I have driver's side door rattles, too. Have taken it to the dealership twice, still have rattles. I just live with it now.

MY driver's side door rattles like a biiiiiitch. I can hear it over my music [no matter what genre]

Man, if I played my radio that loud I wouldn't be able to hear the door rattle over my head rattle.

I have lots of little rattles that migrate around the car. It drives me nuts because it's worthless to fix them. I'm pretty sure I've traced one to the black plastic piece that sits under the door release lever, but I think that's the only one I could fix without problems. Oh well, I'm starting to care less and less about them.

Lol one of my teachers says that literally every day, good thing I dont have a ipod

Ok, the RX8 drive is really loud sometimes and smooth at other times. I think most of the noise I hear come from the front (drivetrain - tires or something)....I hate em....I have to turn up the audio to subdue the noise but when I'm with a passenger, I feel like damn, they can hear all that noise.

Do you think it's the stock tires or because the car is close to the ground? I have an appointment with the dealership today to look at it in 2 hours but I won't wanna have them work on my car for unnecessary shit. Mechanics make me nervous

i've had the driver side door rattle "fixed" at the dealership three times now, and it still rattles :(

Yes, people I have the windows down and I'm going about 65 mph down the interstate. So, no I don't have all the windows up listening to it! That would be extremely loud! When I have the windows up it's usually at about 15 or so. I didn't mean for this to turn into a damaging ears thread. :mdrmed:

Since you like loud music it may be the speaker vibration causing it. You may want to try Dyno Matting inside the doors. It's made to eliminate vibration from loud stereo's. I had it in my Mustang and it worked wonders.

I was waiting for that. That's what I fugured I would have to do. Crap.
