Ran The 8 With The E-Brakes Engaged....

I made a mistake driving the 8 tonight, and I went from the roof of a parking lot to the streets before I realized my ebrakes were engaged.

And I wasn't going nicely. I was pushing the 8 around the corners.

How much damage did I do? It probably took me 2mins or so to get from the roof to the bottom.

dont get your panties bunched up :cwm27:

I'd hazard you didn't do jack to them.

SayNoToPistons 09-18-2007 10:01 PM

Damage? I'm sorry but you probably blew an apex seal and a coolant seal with it. I bet your irons/housings are gone too. Sorry, i think you have to find some really good hook up for an engine replacement. Your whole rear subframe is probably gone too.

j/k ... Doubt theres any "damage."

Cody Red 09-18-2007 10:03 PM

you've got two e-brakes?

jk, i've driven with mine engaged for quite a bit til i accidently hit it with my hand.

ken-x8 09-18-2007 10:31 PM

If it didn't catch fire, you're fine.

MrCairo 09-18-2007 10:33 PM

Yea, probably no "damage". Worse case is that you may have warped the rear disc brake rotors because of the heat generated. I've ran with the e-brake on before (on a different vehicle) to the point that the brakes were squealing really bad. Even after driving for about 10 minutes like that there was no damage at all (except maybe to my ego).

Cheers!

I ran an 8 with my e-brake engaged as well. I still won. ZING!

Rootski 09-18-2007 11:11 PM

Was it way cranked up, or was it just bumped up a little? If it's the latter it probably wasn't even really engaged.

reaper1 09-19-2007 06:20 AM

I think we've probably all have done this one time or another . I know I have.

altspace 09-19-2007 06:59 AM

Same here, just not in my 8. If you went all that way without noticing any hesitation (not sure how you can mis a huge lever sticking up next to the shifter.....but anyway) then I'm sure it was not engaged tight enough. You might actually need to tight it if you had the lever really high and the car moved. It should only take 5-7 clicks before the e-brake is engaged fully.

Rems31 09-19-2007 08:55 AM

Since I dont do burn out type launches, I usually notice if the e-brake is on. It will move up a bit but then it won't go anywhere after that unless I gas it some more. But if I do that, then I wonder why I need to give it more gas and release the parking brake.

That was the reason why I would never want to engage the emergency brakes. I would always park the vehicle in first gear without emergency brakes. But with a rotary engine you have no choice but to use emergency brakes :(

On flat surfaces you can just park the car in gear without using E-brakes. But I dont think its a good idea.

Razz1 09-19-2007 11:57 AM

I think you might want to consider selling it.

tajabaho1 09-19-2007 01:29 PM

junkyard seems more appropriate :)

Warped rotors or glazed pads is about the worst you could have done, aside from boiling the brake fluid, which you would have noticed when you were unable to stop.

If it feels/sounds fine, you're probably fine.

You might want to buy a second 8 and just to be safe though. :lol2:

Spinning Sushi 09-19-2007 02:31 PM

Driving with your e-brakes engaged is dangerous! You could've teared a hole in subspace and had everybody sucked into it!

haha

no harm done to your car, you didn't ride the e-brake that long

I agree, at most you've heated the rotors up and glazed the pads. If they start making light squealing noises later, you may want to check them. Doesn't sound like you drove long enough to do that much damage. Look at the rotors, if they look Shiny compared to the Front ones, pull them off, have them resurfaced and put on new pads. Very easy, simple process. If not shiny or squealing sounds, all should be cool.

Wait a minute.............you mean that handle between the seats is an e-brake.. Fing dealer told me that pulling that handle engages the warp drive that enables me to beat WRX's, Lancer's, Stangs and the like in a straight line not just on curves.

Man I better be able to shot laser beams from my head lights like the dealer said or I'm really gonna be PO'd :uhh:

dynamho 09-19-2007 04:02 PM

You should hear the story about the guy where the passenger thought the e-brake was a handhold and spun the car out by grabbing on to it during a hard corner.

dynamho 09-19-2007 04:05 PM

Running with e-brakes on is okay, but running and then stopping with e-brakes on will warp your rear rotors.

You see, the part where the pads are clamped will cool much slower than the exposed part of the rotor. A lot of amateur traffic light racers get warped rotors this way. They cook up the rotors stopping the car from high speed then keep their brakes engaged at the traffic light.

Razz1 09-19-2007 04:37 PM

I still don't see his car up for sale on the forum.

I just don't know whats up.
