Radar Detector -1 cop +1

So I was driving to work at around 230pm coming out of my beach apartment I was staying at for the week up in Hallandale Beach. I'm driving on a normal straightaway street. I see a school sign. I don't bother to look around or anything because hey, it's August 7th (day after my b-day).. School can't be in session yet.. I'm on a red light. It turns green, I speed up to about 40ish with a jeep right next to me, cruising.. My RD does a little beep and that's it. Another red light.. And while I'm waiting for the light to turn green, I see some cops ahead standing on the middle of the road waiting for me and that jeep. I'm thinking to myself ah crap what did I do, I look around and the school lights are blinking "15 mph when flashing".. The light turns green and 2 cops has us both pulled over to the side. To make the story short. The cop lets me off with a warning. Saying "I know you can't pay a $380 ticket." and that school runs year round around here. Also asked if I go to school. I said yes of course. Oh and that guy other guy got the ticket.

And yes, I have a Cobra. :(
I guess it's time to get a new RD. :eyetwitch

Jasonawojo 08-11-2008 09:44 PM

Lucky that you got a warning, it is hard to tell exactly when school is in session as occasionally they'll let the sign lights function even though there isn't school. They're somewhat sneaky on the school zone patrol around here also, and rightfully so.

Garrett 08-11-2008 10:08 PM

You really got off lucky, but you obviously figured that out. I have a Cobra too, I can say pretty confidently that it's probably never saved me. Whenever it goes off, it's ALWAYS a false alarm in the same spots every day driving to school. The few times it even potentially "saved me" were likely just coincidences-a cop happened to driving by when it went off.

I need a Valentine One...

Yea.. Same with me.. Always get a false alert. Same spots too.. I've gotten pretty much 1 save. And I bet that cop wasn't even paying attention.

I need an upgrade as well.

moRotorMotor 08-11-2008 10:37 PM

So....Cobra FTL?

otakurx 08-12-2008 03:15 AM

I had a cobra for a long time then got a escort passport 9500 because I was still getting tickets with the cobra. I have to say that the escort was an amazing investment, the thing is dead on accurate. Tho they can still get you with laser, my buddy found that out while driving my car. Another one that works are the scorpian jammers, my friend got one of those and wow you don't even need to slow down if your brave.

No doubt. I thought I was getting a good deal on my Cobra XRS 9985 (pretty much a top Cobra model) for $80 brand new. But in reality, they just stole my $80.

I'll probably sell this one on ebay and get myself a top of the line RD. Probably the Escort 8500 x50, or 9500. Because I know those work.

rddragoness 08-12-2008 02:13 PM

Why dont you try slowing down!!!!!!!. The cop said school is in session year round. Does it bother you more to think you lost $80.00, or kill a kid or maim him, and any other's that have to witness their buddy mowed down, for life???

Some people.....

Yea.. Didn't see any kids, or a school. And the poster above is right. Who would think school is in session during early August. I wouldn't..

I highlighted the things that should have already had his attention. 1. It was his apartment, so he was familiar with the area, enough to know that they were there. Evidently he did, since he looked around to see if they were blinking.

but what made me maddest was he guess he needed to get another RADAR DETECTOR????? What if there had not been a cop there, to create that little beep, and a child even if it had not been during a school session had been there. Ever thought of a playground?

I guess it takes a parent to think about all of these scenarios. Just my .02.

Ah, well let me rephrase, it is my beach apartment but I've only been there maybe 1 or 2 times before. It's a pretty brand new area for me. As for the kids.. Nothing in sight, it looked deserted. And what is this playground crap? I'm no maniac driver.. And yes, I need a new RD. Because cops shouldn't use radar when there isn't anyone in sight, especially children in a school zone.

Ah well.. :uhh:

rddragoness 08-13-2008 02:58 AM

Well let me clarify....Most elementary and middle schools have playgrounds, for children. They also use them when school is not in session, unless they are fenced in. Maybe your area is like that.
I have property actually in N Fl that I don't visit often, but I make a habit of checking school calendars since there is one right up the street from where it sits.
Actually I've considered a RD too at times for highway use. I watch my speed in the city because there are so many idiot drivers out there, but that's just me.
I'll get off my soap box now.... ;) Actually glad you didn't get a ticket. $380.00??? WOW...

I know bro.. But they're about $500. I'll probably get an Escort because of the price. I'm still riding on my elite Cobra. And btw, are you a radar king?

lopezian2004 09-12-2008 12:44 AM

for real.. i sucked it up and got a V1 for myself. Back when i drove my old ford ranger i owned a top of the line cobra for the longest time and thought they were so good until i ended up getting TWO tickets... although one was a laser ticket and the other was "rolling through a stop sign".. but still ever since i've owned the V1 and rx8 i haven't gotten a single ticket yet!!! HOORAY!! haha

no but seriously though, the V1 is awesome if you can afford it. I also bought my gf the escort 8500 x50 for her birthday and its done an excellent job as well.. both very good investments IMO!!

Brettus 09-12-2008 12:44 AM

V1 does work very well - has saved me numerous times but you can't beat instant on or laser :(

Laser Jammers are illegal in the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.

In states where laser jammers are illegal, it would be advisable to power the units down after they active and you have slowed down, to avoid suspicions from law enforcement.

RotaryP7 09-12-2008 07:25 AM

^ Have you seen some laser jammers? Friend of mine has one that goes inside the grill of the car so it can't be seen. Pretty expensive too..

Agree that the V1 is a great detector. I keep it in advanced logic mode and let it filter out most of the falsies. Seems to work great . . . it still lets in some false signals but I've never has it filter out a real one as far as I can tell. I sprang for the hidden display for night time use, but I'm not that crazy about it. You need to mount it near the power point, which makes it unreadable when your gearshift is in 3rd or 5th.

It's true that you can't beat the instant on, but you can improve your odds by always taking seriously even brief, weak Ka and Laser signals as they tell you someone up ahead may've just been painted.

As an aside, I've noticed that here in Ohio authorities (or someone) are planting radar emitters in mobile flashing highway signs ("left lane closed ahead" - that sort of thing). These normally seem to K band. Anyone else seeing this? I'm just wondering how wide spread this has become.

no, the 9500ci includes a laser jamming system.

btw, radar jamming is illegal in the usa because those frequencies are regulated by the fcc.

light on the other hand is not regulated because.. what they are gonna do.. tell the sun it cant shine?

Yes I have noticed this as well, its really annoying, I dont know if they are doing it on purpose or maybe its just something to do with the signs. Either way I have only gotten 1 ticket with the Valentine One and that was an instant Laser on, I should've known better I had 5 cops pass me that day trying to nail me, the 6th cop on the road got me. This is all in about a 30 minute drive.

chickenwafer 09-13-2008 10:44 PM

Cobra radar detectors just tell you when you're about to get a ticket. Or there is a 7Eleven across the street.

I got a Passport S2 Solo (wireless version) and never looked back. It's saved my butt many of times. I love the fact that it's wireless but I am looking to upgrade to the new 9500i. It's just pure badass.

I was riding in a friends RX-8 with a 9500i and the detector goes off, Ka band, so you know it's a cop. We slow down, look around, nothing, Ka band getting stronger, still waiting, and then finally we see it's a photo radar van. I swear the Passport warned us a full 1/2 mile before the van, even around turns! Three cars passed us and got popped.

DrewMan 09-13-2008 11:04 PM

why dont you americans just dont speed? sure if might feel fun but speed can be the difference between whiplash and a broken neck

radar detectors/jammers here in aus are illegal and you can get fined like 1200 bucks if youre found with one lol

jahman11 09-13-2008 11:12 PM

What? Are you trying to say only Americans speed please most people who drive any kind of sports car speeds at one time or the other btw I am not refering to street racing which is dangerous and kills... Drewman you sound a bit self righteous to me..

StealthTL 09-13-2008 11:20 PM

Ha! the fine for my jammer would be $3500 US if they find it.

TheFCC don't like jammers....

S

Davey's RX-8 09-13-2008 11:21 PM

Not to mention the fact that speed limits in the US are artifically low to begin with.

I'm fighting a 64 in a 45 locally. Cited for driving higher than reasonably prudent not for exceeding the prima facie posted limit. I pulled the most recent traffic and engineering survey. Not only was it almost 7 years old (it needs to be less than five in this particular instance) but the 85th percentile on the survey was 52, which means the posted limit should have been 50 not 45. No reason was given for the lower limit. Go figure. :banghead:

IF speed limits were set reasonably then that might be an option. Roads here that will easily support 50-60mph are regulated to 30 and 40mph. We have shit to do, society is all about deadlines and appointments, and there are redlights at every minor intersection that slow you down more. I dont know how it is over there, but in many areas, traffic flow is very inefficient. Time is money, and so that is why most of us "speed" even though we are still driving at a very reasonable rate for the circumstances. But the law has set the speed limit artificially low to assist in revenue generation.

BTW, people who speed are *usually* (notice that I did not say always) more attentive to their driving and the immediate area around them, than people who drive slower but drive distracted or just zone out/relax. I have avoided many an accident even though I was driving faster than the limit, because I was at a heightened state of awareness versus someone in a cadillac with a living room couch for a front seat that is doing 2 under the limit, smoking a cigarette with one arm thrown across the seat.

They have a lot of them in north carolina and also in pennsylvania and new jersey (when I drove through there a few years ago). IN PA, there was construction on I81, even though it did not appear they were actually doing anything, they just had the orange barrels about 10 foot off the shoulder. And they had those large signs every 5 miles or so, and each one would progressively peg out the radar detector.

Then when I got up into NJ, each overpass I would go under, would have something mounted on the side facing oncoming traffic, and the detector would progressively peg out. But on the other side there was nothing mounted, and no flash ever went off...so I dont know what that was about.

And in the mountains of western NC on I40 there are several stationary overhead "highway message" signs and each constantly emits radar, even though none of them actually measure your speed so far as I can tell.

Here in my medium size town in east TN, they have these dumb little trailer "radar signs" that the cops tow around and park on the side of the road in random places each week. They do not issue tickets and no cop cars are nearby monitoring them. This has been going on for several years now, I do not understand the point of it, as people just drive by them without paying any mind (again, in areas where the limit is set artificially low to begin with).

I actually think it would be funny if someone were to

1) shoot the things out with a shotgun

or

2) actually hook up to it at night and drag it to the nearby lake.

Of course I would never have the balls to do either, but it would be funny as hell to hear about it.

Unfortunately I hear that my town is about to let that company that implements the speed and redlight cameras, come and put them here. As if a middle class town of 50k people with less than 10 major intersections needs those things.

Looks to me that it went down like this:

Idiots +1 (you for speeding in a school zone and the cop for not ticketing you)
Society -1

If I was speeding like that I'd be ashamed of myself, not posting it in a public forum. Get a brain.

I agree that he should not have been speeding in a school zone. They call it a "School Zone" for a reason. To protect the kids. IN general the speed limit in the states is significantly lower than it should be. For example, there is a 4 lane highway I live near with MPH as 45. Mind you, NO houses, NO schools, and only ONE large shopping center at one point. This is a long road too maybe 60 miles or so in length. With a few stoplights/intersections, but in general you wont hit them all. No point at all for speed limit to be so slow.

Shit, it would make a good license plate. I have a V1 in my denali, rx7, rx8, and wife's millenia. Just like visa, never leave home without it.

Recently I picked up a state trooper 2.5 miles from his hiding spot. Granted I was at the top of a hill and he was at the bottom, but that is impeccable range.

Well first off, I wasn't from the area. Didn't see any school or kids. Second, the jeep next to me was going a little faster than me so I didn't pay attention to any school zone flashing lights and continued below the original speed limit. After passing a intersection, I realized I was in a school zone. By that time, it was too late.

Ashamed.. No.. Pissed off because my RD didn't work.. Yes! :banghead:  :)

they have to make the speed limit 35mph on a street that could easily handle 60 b/c stupid woman cant drive with out doing something else at the same time. SOO True, every time I am in the car with my wife, the first thing she does (in the passenger seat) is to start makin phone calls. I'm like NOOOOO!!!
