R3 wheels

Hey guys, probably a dumb question. But would i be able to fit R3 wheels on a 04 sports package Rex? And what would i be able to for any kind of tires on them? For instance, i have some Falkens 225/35 18. I think. It's not stock numbers. But comments?

EricB 03-06-2013 10:32 PM

any 5x114.3 wheel will fit on our car.

you will need 19" tires not 18.

imho, its cheaper to buy a set of used authentic jdm wheels that are wider and have a better offset.

DR04RX8 03-07-2013 02:45 PM

well with me im not much into looks, i pefer performance. but are you recomending aftermarket rims? or what exactly are you saying? sorry a little slow at getting stuff.

ShadowDragon78 03-07-2013 03:01 PM

I just installed a set of R3's on my RX8 and they fit just fine.

DR04RX8 03-07-2013 03:25 PM

are they 19's?

G_ man 03-07-2013 03:45 PM

R3's are 19" wheels but if you want performance go with an 18" or even better a 17" wheel the rubber is alot cheaper for a 17" wheel. That's what I'm doing for track days this year (17" enkie rpf1's) I'm still undecided on which tire to use.

DR04RX8 03-07-2013 04:56 PM

Do R3's come in 18's? I really like the way they look, I've considered other wheels as well. And how much do they weigh?

9krpmrx8 03-07-2013 04:57 PM

No, they are 19" x 8" +50 I believe. I can double check when I get home.

RadRedR3 03-07-2013 05:09 PM

You're correct. Definitely 19x8. Offset is either +50 or +48. Close enough that it doesn't actually matter.

G_ man 03-07-2013 05:44 PM

Series 2 rx8's have 18" wheels but silver I beleive. The R3 is not a wheel but a trim version of the RX8 which has 19x8" wheels

godesshunter 03-07-2013 05:46 PM

19x8 + 47

Well no shit Chet. We were all well aware (I own one), but thanks for the clarification Captain Obvious. Lol

Thumbs up! Hahaha

I have a S1 with 18" 04 sports. And i know that the R3 is just a trim version, i just called then r€ wheels cuz they're on that car. And thanks for the help guys! Also, what colors do the wheels come in?

RadRedR3 03-07-2013 06:39 PM

They're a dark grey. Gum metal? I don't know how to describe it. Google images is your friend. Lol. Anyways, that's the only oem color that the "19x8 +47 dray grey forged wheels manufactured by BBS for oem use on the R3 trim level Mazda RX8". Or, we could just call it the R3 since we know we're talking about a wheel.

This wasn't in the series 2 section so everyone might not know that the series 2 wheels were similar to the r3 ones but a different color and 1" smaller. Probably be easier to locate a set of those than the r3 rims.

RadRedR3 03-07-2013 07:58 PM

Different color. Smaller diameter. AND... Cast instead of forged. But, fair enough. Everyone might not know. But I think it was pretty clear that everyone in the thread knew what they were discussing.

Perhaps, if the FAQ was missing the general info... That was a better place for the clarification. Lol

EricB 03-07-2013 08:26 PM

honestly who cares... r3 rims are a waste of money.

if you prefer performance you should be looking at wheels in the 9.5- 10 width range

you can buy wheels that are larger in diameter so you can put wider tires on, have a better offset and sit flush with the fender and are much lighter..... just buy aftermarket, its more cost effective instead of buying r3 wheels.

If you want maximum performance stick to the 17s and 18s, 17s will have a taller sidewall and the tires will be cheaper.

9krpmrx8 03-08-2013 10:18 AM

Waste of money versus what? You can get plenty of tire on an R3 wheel and FYI, a 19" R3 wheel with tire is almost the same weight as a stock 18" with tire. I know, I have an R3 in my driveway and we have compared them. 17's are for Honda's.

RadRedR3, no kidding it's obvious,I also own one but my post was directed to the OP not you, because of his question reguarding an 18" R3 wheel.
And thanks for calling me Captain LoL.

RadRedR3 03-08-2013 06:11 PM

No problem chief. Lol

jasonrxeight 03-09-2013 11:21 AM

I am actually thinking of selling my R3 wheels.
I feel like some BBS old school two piece gold and brushed silver lips look with a staggered configuration.

scorcherjf 03-09-2013 12:12 PM

If you want 18" R3 rims the new 2013 mazda speed 3 has some suspiciously similar looking 18" wheels lol...

Anyway, from a performance perspective the 19" R3's are heavy and narrow. You'd be better off with a thicker 18" wheel with some thicker tires. If you're into tracking/autoX, maybe 17" as was noted above since they weigh less and would reduce unsprung weight.

DR04RX8 03-10-2013 11:46 PM

Well i don't track lol. But i wad looking for some sexy wheels that won't be as heavy. I like the way they look, but i didn't know they were heavier than the stock 18". But if you guys suggest aftermarket. Then maybe I'll go with them. And the wheels that are thicker in the back, are tires more expensive? And i thought we had pretty thick wheels lol. (compared to my teggy) lol

RadRedR3 03-11-2013 12:40 AM

If you like the R3's and can find a set, run them. They're forged wheels. They're no heavier then the cast 18's. like you said, you don't track, but even is you did all this bullshit about them being heavier is crap that's just repeated.

As far as tire size goes the 225's they come with stock are too narrow. Put a nice set of 245's on which is plenty of tire and fits perfectly. Want more? I've seen 275's fit to them and they still work fine.

Problem solved. You came here and knew what you wanted and got a bunch of I'll informed opinions that have you second guessing yourself. It's your money. They'll work fine and you like them. Don't let anyone change your mind. Good look brother.

Straight up with the answer! Thanks bro! I just didn't want to go heavier on wheels. But if their the same or lighter. Then I'll be looking for some! Again, thanks man.
