Quick question about 6th gear.

I'm getting a wierd sound from my car when I'm cruising in 6th on the highway. If I let off the throttle and then abruptly toe into it I hear this wierd "chunch" sound. It doesn't happen soo much in the other gears, only 6th.

Say I'm going 80mph, if I let off the throttle completely and then quickly jab into it I'll get the sound as if something is catching in that instant.

Is my clutch going bad and slipping a little when I do this or is this normal? I havn't smelt the acrid stench of burnt clutch after doing this over and over.

swoope 07-14-2006 11:37 PM

what is the build date of you car????

beers

Moostafa29 07-14-2006 11:55 PM

Haven't heard of this problem yet.

Rinkadink 07-15-2006 12:43 AM

Build date a June 05 I think. The sound also occurs when I upshift into 5th or 6th. It's not very loud at all. Sounds kinda like if you take a piece of printer paper, ball it up, and then drop it from waist height onto the ground. The sound of the ball of paper hitting the ground that is. Probably a bit lighter than that but it still sounds wierd.

Raptor2k 07-15-2006 12:46 AM

I think I have that sound, it's like a jerk....is it a big deal? I don't think so, not something I would worry about. The throttle is really sensitive. I remember when I first got the car I was doing it all the time, because I wasn't used to such a sensitive gas pedal.

zoom44 07-15-2006 02:19 AM

whats that you tried to delete rinkadink? you answering a question meant for 6steelstrings? how many alter egos do you have?

zoom44 07-15-2006 02:24 AM

BlueSky and 6steelstrings so just 2 so far

swoope 07-15-2006 02:24 AM

oohhhhh,
i get it now.... zoom. cant wait till you find my post to you!!!

Raptor2k 07-15-2006 02:27 AM

...sigh...

6steelstrings 07-15-2006 02:56 AM

Had to create 3 accounts because everyone would make fun of my honest questions and then I'd lose credibility. Whatever, zoom, could you please delete all three of my accounts.

Thanks.

cjkim 07-15-2006 04:00 AM

LOL. i had a feeling this was you too.

KJ238 07-15-2006 04:28 AM

thank you for the entertainment

Paul_in_DC 07-15-2006 11:48 AM

Heh... of course, having multiple sock-puppets didn't do much for credibility either.

otherside 07-15-2006 12:37 PM

Idiot!.......God!!!!!

Here's some help for you.

1.) Just pick one of your user names and stick with it. If you become a useful member of the forum this episode will be forgotten.

2.) Stop being such an obsessive little freak and realize that all cars have little quirks. Just because a part of your car is getting dirty or you hear some little noise doesn't mean there's something wrong. Cars are mechanical, they make noises and they get dirty. In other words, use some common sense and don't sweat the small stuff.

3.) Go through and actually read these forums. Stop starting pointless threads and getting your panties in a wad over the way people respond. In the time you waste doing that you could have found a logical explanation on your own.

4.) If you think the problem is us rather than you. Go post elsewhere, because you're not going to find many people that feel likewise. Maybe RX8web will have the patience for you, many people here will not.

5.) If you don't want to be a part of this forum there no need for your accounts to be deleted. Just stop posting and your threads will vanish into oblivion.

6.) I would suggest not creating yet another account and posting as usual. You will be found out and things will just be made worse.

This is the first and last time I will help you. Keep things going as is and I go back to being the "prick" you think I am.

Ike, I just posted a thread addressing this. Coincidence I guess.

I get it since day one but it goes away if you shift differently.

AirlockRX 07-16-2006 02:07 AM

Back on topic, Never noticed that problem, but I don't shift into 6th until about 120... :dubs:

6th gear

The noise you hear in 6th gear could be a worn or defective universal joint on either end of the driveshaft. I had a similar problem on another car (99 Mustang GT). I had a bad u. joint where the drive shaft connected to the rear end.

Are there any other symptoms of a worn u-joint?

machfive 07-17-2006 01:00 AM

u joint

Sometime a worn u joint can "click" like when a c.v. joint (constant velocity) in a front wheel drive car sounds when it is going bad. The noise you are hearing in 6th gear could be slack in the u joint. This is the same noise I was heaing in my Mustang. It only happened in 5th gear for me (no 6th gear on a 99 GT) and only when I let off the throttle in 6th gear and abruptly floored it again.

Crazy Rx-8 Driver 07-17-2006 01:02 AM

this happend to me not too long ago... go get it checked out, you'll most likely get a new tranny lol

this was the first signs for me untill my reverse blew out on me, it wouldnt stay in reverse or 6th.

better get it checked out sooner than later.... trust me on this one. :)

BlueSky 07-17-2006 01:03 AM

Hmmm ok, thanks for the info. To clarify the sound, it sounds like a balled up piece of paper when it hits the ground from a height of 2-3 feet. Just not that loud, a little softer.

yup, that's what happend to me too. i'll search for my thread on this months ago, or you can if you want. but if you bring it it now they will probably change out the fluid to see what's in there if there's any metals in it, and change what ever is necessary.

BlueSky 07-17-2006 01:10 AM

I did search for the problem a while back but I probably didn't search the right keywords. If you have the link on hand that would be very helpful, thanks. But I'll look through all the threads you've created and see if I can find it.

What exactly did you complain about to the dealer to have them check that specific problem? Like did you complain about the noise it made or something else?

Thanks

Bart! 07-17-2006 01:38 AM

If I still worried about shit like this, I'd end up not running the car at all. Just drive the damn thing.

BlueSky 07-17-2006 01:42 AM

I do drive it. I just don't want problems down the road. And its obvious now from the above posts that this is an issue worth getting checked. I had written it off a few days ago, but now its back on my list.

if there's a hint that something might be wrong, its worth getting it checked out before something else happens. he has the right to worry. dont you think?

anyways, get t checked out. have the tech drive it with you in the car and point out the sound, if he says its normal, leave and find another dealership that has techs with good ears haha. when i let the tech drive my car it was obvious something was wrong, they couldnt get it into reverse, and 6th pop'd out on occassion.. depends on speed/load etc.

BlueSky 07-17-2006 01:53 AM

Yeah I read your thread. One last question: Did you notice the problem I have and then ignored it, which led to the more serious problems you had? Or did it happen all at once for you.

an idea... you are going to the dealer in the morning correct?

you have gotten a big big pass here... you might just go to the dealer and report back with issuse you still have...

beers

BlueSky 07-17-2006 02:02 AM

I actually have to reschedule for Tuesday. But swoope, I had written this problem off hours after I created this thread based on the early responses I got. Thought this thread was dead until Crazy came on and echoed my problem.

swoope 07-17-2006 02:11 AM

cool,

you need to ride with a tech and make sure they hear the problems and write them down...

you give them the issues let them fix them.... dont tell them what they are and how to fix them...

just good advice...

beers

BlueSky 07-17-2006 02:55 AM

definitely good advice. I made the mistake of taking my car to a dealership and told them that the brakes squeak and I want them to perform the TSB. Left it overnight, and the next day they tell me "Could no Duplicate".

swoope 07-17-2006 03:08 AM

that is why you make them hear it...

beers

btw... you need to be steelbluedink it is brilliant

BlueSky 07-17-2006 05:57 PM

K, swoope, appointment at 10:15am tomorrow. I'll report back with all the details.

Problems I will have checked:
-Possible transmission/u-joint problem from this thread
-Squeaky brakes
-Neverending buzzing from passenger side while moving
-high frequency buzzing from interior at 5k+ RPMs (just started today)
-Steering allignment

Hopefully I'll be able to replicate all those problems in a single test-drive with a tech in the car.
