Question on the wankel

I was talking to a buddy of mine and he told me that the two triangular cylinders have to be replaced as they wear out at around 20k miles. Is this just a rare occurance or something common?

Ike 03-19-2006 03:18 AM

You're "buddy" has no idea what he's talking about. They're not triangular cylinders, and they do not wear out. Blown apex seals have been a problem with rotaries but even in their most unreliable application every 20k miles is nonsense. The RX-8 wouldn't even exist if that was the case, use some common sense...

Imidazole 03-19-2006 03:31 AM

Pure ignorance.

Raptor2k 03-19-2006 03:45 AM

I replace mine about every 5k.

Lucky. I have to build a whole new engine every other tank. With old wristwatch parts. Using only my teeth.

You guys are getting off easy!

I've had to replace the entire car 4 times in the last year. But I love the 8 and wouldn't have it any other way!

You can read about it here:

Your buddy is in a time warp. Over 30 years ago when Mazda first introduced the rotary to America there were problems with worn rotar seals and it did in fact occur fairly early in the life of the engine. A problem that was solved long ago and is not a factor in the Renesis engine.

NgoRX8 03-19-2006 12:01 PM

oh shit... 15000 more miles till my cylinders wear out... DAMN!

Hah, guess one simple question must set off all the people here. What a nice community.

I just asked him what he would prefer and why between a STI and a rx-8. He just gave me that reason so I wanted to see if it was true or not.

The STI is made by 4 fingered leprechauns.

I bought a Valu-Pak (16 count) of Apex seals on eBay for $19.99 and now change them every 3k miles.

Preventative maintenance!

You get what you deserve. You ask a stupid ass question, well... you have to expect some stupid ass responses. Your buddy's statement makes about as much sense as someone saying that your pistons need replaced every 20k miles.

HolyCross05 03-19-2006 05:44 PM

I heard you have to use diesel for the rotary.

Low Fly'n 8 03-19-2006 05:50 PM

True, and you have to add a quart of oil at every fill up. I know... because my buddy said so. :dunce:

Bart! 03-19-2006 06:49 PM

All of you guys are lucky.. my engine fell out when I was driving my car the other day, probably because my rotors wore out..

Do you guys remember the guy that said his tire came off on the highway when driving his friends RX8? He luckily managed to drive home on 3 tires and put it back on.

Even when you defend the 8 you still manage to dump on it. Knowing many rotary owners, apex seals has been no greater a problem with rotaries than piston rings in regular engines. It is usually the first to go, which is to be expected, but to call it a "problem" is pushing it...which you love to do.

Renesis_8 03-19-2006 08:31 PM

What rotors, last time i checked it had two triangular pistons moving up and down
